Hola querido hiver.

Hace aproximadamente un año y medio te enseñaba el Castillo de Peñíscola, lugar en el que se refugió y terminó sus días Benedicto XIII, uno de los protagonistas del Cisma de Occidente de la Iglesia Católica. Pues bien, en esta ocasión daremos marcha atrás en el tiempo y conoceremos el castillo-palacio en el que nació.

Visitar Illueca es sinónimo de dos cosas: su industria del calzado ahora sumida en un grave declive y casi inexistente, y su relación con la familia de los Luna. Estos fueron una de las estirpes más poderosas de Aragón, aunque el miembro con mayor fama sea Benedicto XIII.

Por cualquier parte a la que vayamos de la localidad encontramos referencias que nos remiten hacia su ilustre poblador. Asimismo también siempre que levantemos la vista veremos sobre todas las construcciones, dominando como la fortaleza que fue concebida en su inicio, este imponente castillo-palacio.

Desde el exterior se observan claramente sus tres intervenciones constructivas: primero mudéjar del siglo XIV, a la que corresponden las dos primeras hileras de ventanas; luego renacentista del XVI, cuando se le incorporó la galería de barquillos, el tejado y la portada actual; y por fin el barroco de un siglo más tarde, en el que se construyó la escalinata interior.

La guía nos explicó que al principio se entraba por la parte trasera, orientada hacia el norte y mucho más fría. Todavía se ve la que fue su puerta, ahora transformada en ventanal acristalado. Fue en la primera reforma cuando se cambió la portada hacia donde hoy la vemos.

Se puede acceder con el coche hasta la misma puerta del castillo-palacio, más cómodo imposible. Ya desde el aparcamiento disfrutamos de una bonita panorámica de todo el pueblo, apiñado a los pies de la fortaleza y extendiéndose siguiendo el curso del río Aranda.

Antes de entrar lo que más llama la atención es sin duda el contraste de la piedra oscura de la portada con la piedra y ladrillos rojizos del resto de la construcción. Esto es así porque está inspirada en un palacio italiano situado en Urbino.

Al atravesar la puerta nos recibe una larga escalinata. En su parte superior se abre un patio cubierto por una bóveda que se quedó sin decorar, pero que nos da una idea del poderío de los que mandaron realizar la reforma.

Aunque el castillo-palacio está muy reformado se pueden apreciar restos de cómo era. Ahora tiene varios usos: por un lado, como hospedería y por otro como sede del gobierno comarcal. Esto le da vida y facilita su mantenimiento.

Por ejemplo, el arco abierto que queda sobre la puerta resulta ser la terraza de la cafetería del edificio. Varias mesas con restos de desayunos así lo confirmaban. No me hubiera importado tomarme un café, pero no hubo tiempo porque la visita guiada estaba a punto de comenzar.

La recepción de la hospedería contiene uno de los puntos de mayor interés de todo el edificio. Esta es una estancia reducida que hacía las veces de capilla privada. En la actualidad se exhibe en ella una reproducción del cráneo de Benedicto XIII. Esta reliquia ha sufrido un periplo interesante. Su último episodio es que fue robado para pedir un rescate por él en el año 2000. Si tienes curiosidad y quieres saber más puedes consultar la web oficial mantenida por el ayuntamiento de Sabiñán, que es donde se encuentra custodiada en la actualidad.

Hablando de cosas oficiales, la parte noble destinada a plenos de gobierno y actividades para el público de la comarca contiene el resto de elementos interesantes para conocer la historia del edificio. Se pueden ver tanto cuadros donados por artistas de la zona como piezas originales conservadas.

Las vistas desde esta parte tampoco están nada mal. Nos hacemos una idea de la facilidad con la que el señor de estas tierras podía vigilar el trabajo de sus campos.

Hablando de vistas, en estas estancias es necesario mirar los techos. Se ha tratado de recuperar al máximo su estado original. Donde ahora vemos madera era todo policromado y decorado con pan de oro.

Nos asomamos de nuevo desde la parte más alta de la portada. Aquí tomaron el protagonismo las golondrinas que emprendían camino hacia el sur para pasar el invierno. Había montones de ellas. Con esto la visita terminó.

Dejamos Illueca saliendo por el lado contrario al que entramos y así obtuve la panorámica con la que me despido.

Hi, dear hiver.

About a year and a half ago, I showed you the Castle of Peñíscola, where Benedict XIII, one of the protagonists of the Western Schism of the Catholic Church, took refuge and ended his days. Well, this time we will go back in time and visit the castle-palace where he was born.

Visiting Illueca is synonymous with two things: its footwear industry, now in serious decline and almost non-existent, and its relationship with the Luna family. They were one of the most powerful families in Aragon, although the most famous member is Benedict XIII.

Wherever we go in the town, we find references to its illustrious inhabitant. Likewise, whenever we look up, we see this imposing castle-palace towering over all the buildings, dominating the landscape like the fortress it was originally designed to be.

From the outside, three periods of construction are clearly visible: first, the 14th-century Mudejar style, corresponding to the first two rows of windows; then the 16th-century Renaissance style, when the gallery of arches, the roof and the current façade were added; and finally, the Baroque style of a century later, when the interior staircase was built.

The guide explained that originally the entrance was at the rear, facing north and much colder. You can still see what used to be the door, now transformed into a glass window. It was during the first renovation that the façade was moved to where we see it today.

You can drive right up to the gate of the castle-palace, which couldn't be more convenient. From the car park, you can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the entire village, huddled at the foot of the fortress and stretching along the course of the River Aranda.

Before entering, the most striking feature is undoubtedly the contrast between the dark stone of the façade and the reddish stone and bricks of the rest of the building. This is because it was inspired by an Italian palace in Urbino.

Upon passing through the door, we are greeted by a long staircase. At the top is a courtyard covered by a vaulted ceiling that was left undecorated, but which gives us an idea of the power of those who ordered the renovation.

Although the castle-palace has been extensively renovated, you can still see traces of what it used to be like. It now has several uses: on the one hand, as a guesthouse and, on the other, as the headquarters of the regional government. This brings it to life and facilitates its maintenance.

For example, the open arch above the door turns out to be the terrace of the building's café. Several tables with breakfast leftovers confirmed this. I wouldn't have minded having a coffee, but there was no time because the guided tour was about to begin.

The reception area of the guesthouse contains one of the most interesting features of the entire building. This is a small room that served as a private chapel. Today, it houses a reproduction of the skull of Benedict XIII. This relic has had an interesting journey. Most recently, it was stolen in 2000, with a ransom demand made for its return. If you are curious and want to know more, you can visit the official website maintained by the Sabiñán Town Council, which is where it is currently kept.

Speaking of official matters, the noble part of the building, intended for government plenary sessions and activities for the public of the region, contains the rest of the interesting elements for learning about the history of the building. You can see paintings donated by local artists as well as original pieces that have been preserved.

The views from this part are not bad either. We get an idea of how easy it was for the lord of these lands to supervise the work in his fields.

Speaking of views, in these rooms it is necessary to look up at the ceilings. Every effort has been made to restore them to their original condition. Where we now see wood, everything was once polychromed and decorated with gold leaf.

We looked out again from the highest part of the gate. Here, the swallows taking flight south for the winter took centre stage. There were loads of them. And that was the end of the visit.

We left Illueca by the opposite side to the one we entered, and that's how I got the panoramic view with which I bid you farewell.
