Parque Urbano Freixieiro - Celorico de Basto / Riding Portugal
Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)
Who would have thought that on a seemingly ordinary afternoon in Celorico de Basto, in the green heart of northern Portugal, I would end up posing (without filters or editing) for a photo on the Moon? Well, I didn't become an astronaut overnight, but I can assure you that my short visit to the Freixieiro Urban Park was a true odyssey, worthy of a galactic or rural chronicle, or both :)

It all started with that desire to stretch my legs and discover a little more about this friendly village, where time passes at a different pace, calmer, greener, more human. I had already heard about Freixieiro Park as one of the most welcoming and well-designed spaces in the village, and since the weather was pleasant, neither hot nor cold, I thought "Why not?"
As soon as I entered, I realized that this was no ordinary urban park. Yes, it has well-kept dirt paths, well-kept green areas and strategically placed benches for visitors to rest. But there is a different spirit there.

As soon as I went down the first flight of stairs, I saw a beautiful waterfall, the noise of which was so intense that it drowned out all other sounds around us. I stood there, on top of the bridge, just admiring it for a few minutes.
As I walked a little further, I saw a traditional mill. Not one of those big ones from the Alentejo plains or from tourist postcards, but a discreet mill, with its time-worn stones and dark wooden roof. A heritage gem that I almost missed.
PT
I felt like I was leafing through a book of living rural history. I imagined the millers of old, the smell of milled flour in the air, the hard but rhythmic work. And there I was, with my cell phone in my hand, trying to capture a decent angle between the wheel and the watercourse, while my brain tried to find an Instagram filter that would do justice to the bucolic environment that surrounded me.
But the cherry on top of the mill, or rather, the park, was yet to come.

Next door, in a fenced-in area, I saw a small cluster of ruffled feathers, a chicken coop! And it wasn't just any chicken coop; it was almost a small international poultry embassy. Chickens of various colors, sizes and feathers, vain roosters with catwalk-worthy combs, and even one or two exotic breeds that looked like they had come straight out of a rare breeds catalog.
I never thought I would spend so much time observing chickens, but I confess that I found myself mesmerized. Each one had its own way, its unmistakable clucking, and one gave me a particularly inquisitive look, as if to say, "You took a picture of the windmill but not of me?" I obliged. At Freixieiro, even the chickens have charisma.

Lá lhe fiz a vontade. No Freixieiro, até as galinhas têm carisma.
But the highlight of the visit (and when I say "high", I mean it literally) was when I noticed something curious further ahead, a moon-shaped structure, placed there in the park, illuminated by sunlight. I thought it was funny, took a quick photo and continued, until, as a joke, I decided to position myself right behind it, aligning my silhouette with its illuminated circle. And suddenly, voilà. There I was, with my head inside the moon. Or at least that was the perfect illusion created by that photographic moment.

I looked at the result on my cell phone screen (still in full, this time) and burst out laughing. The truth is that, with a little creativity and the sun at the right angle, we can really look like astronauts in Celorico de Basto. All thanks to the simple but ingenious planning of this park that manages, with very little, to offer truly out-of-this-world experiences.
This park is not just a leisure space. It is a mirror of the local identity, a bridge between the rural past and a present that wants to continue valuing its roots. So I went to investigate and discovered that the park's design was designed exactly for this, to bring the community closer to its agricultural heritage, while providing a pleasant and educational space at the same time.
PT
I also learned that Freixieiro Park is an important part of Celorico's urban plan, serving as the village's green lung and as a meeting place for intergenerational groups. It's not just for tourists, but mainly for locals, who go for walks, relax, chat or take their grandchildren to see exotic chickens instead of the ones in cartoons. Celorico is surprising. Freixieiro, then, surprises and entertains. And if one day you go there and see a moon-shaped structure, don't forget to align yourself with the sun, take a deep breath and get ready for the trip. It may not be NASA, but who needs that when we have Celorico?
PT
I hope you enjoyed.
See you around.
Wishing you much peace and health
