Forte de Nossa Senhora das Neves - Leça da Palmeira / Riding Portugal

Sometimes, all you need is the desire to get out, the right company and a little corner of the country with a sea view. That's exactly what happened on a recent getaway to Leça da Palmeira, a coastal parish in the municipality of Matosinhos, known for its seascapes, good beaches and, of course, its historical relics. One of the points of interest that captivated me on this tour was the Forte de Nossa Senhora das Neves, better known as Forte de Leça da Palmeira.
The day started with clear skies and a timid sun, enough to motivate us to go out and enjoy the morning outdoors. However, the typical wind of this Atlantic area soon made itself felt. It was one of those steady winds that remind us that we are by the sea, and that in the blink of an eye drags heavy clouds across the horizon. Even so, confident, we continued our journey.

Às vezes, basta a vontade de sair, a companhia certa e um cantinho do país com vista para o mar. Foi exatamente isso que aconteceu numa recente escapadinha a Leça da Palmeira, uma freguesia costeira do concelho de Matosinhos, conhecida pelas suas paisagens marítimas, boas praias e, claro, pelas suas relíquias históricas. Um dos pontos de interesse que me cativou neste passeio foi o Forte de Nossa Senhora das Neves, mais conhecido por Forte de Leça da Palmeira.
O dia começou com o céu limpo e um sol tímido, o suficiente para nos motivar a sair e aproveitar a manhã ao ar livre. No entanto, o vento típico desta zona atlântica não tardou a fazer-se sentir. Era daqueles ventos firmes, que nos lembram que estamos à beira-mar, e que num piscar de olhos arrasta nuvens carregadas pelo horizonte fora. Ainda assim, confiantes, seguimos viagem.

We arrived close to lunch time. Instead of going straight to the Fort, we decided to first explore the narrow streets behind the monument, where we knew there were some good restaurants with local tradition. We found a small square with sheltered terraces and, despite the wind and clouds that were already threatening, we sat down and had lunch with a view of the old houses that give Leça so much of its identity.
Lunch was a pleasant surprise. Fresh fish, as expected in this area, well grilled, accompanied by sautéed vegetables and new potatoes, all with that homemade flavor that makes us sigh. Now that we had recovered and our stomachs were satisfied, we decided it was time to explore the Fort.

Chegámos perto da hora de almoço. Ao invés de irmos diretamente ao Forte, decidimos explorar primeiro as ruas estreitas nas traseiras do monumento, onde sabíamos existir alguns bons restaurantes com tradição local. Encontrámos uma pequena praça com esplanadas abrigadas e, apesar do vento e das nuvens que já ameaçavam, sentámo-nos e almoçámos com vista para o casario antigo que dá tanta identidade a Leça.
O almoço foi uma agradável surpresa. Peixe fresco, como seria de esperar nesta zona, bem grelhado, acompanhado por legumes salteados e batatinhas novas, tudo com aquele sabor caseiro que nos faz suspirar. Já recompostos e com o estômago satisfeito, decidimos que estava na hora de explorar o Forte.

We continued walking to the garden surrounding the fort, a well-kept space, with palm trees, lawns and garden benches facing the sea. It is a peaceful place, with the sound of the waves crashing against the nearby rocks. The Fort, unfortunately, was closed to the public that day, which left me somewhat frustrated. I had hoped to explore the interior and climb the walls to photograph the ocean from above.
Even so, the exterior is worth it in itself. Built in the 17th century, the Forte de Nossa Senhora das Neves was part of the defensive system of the Douro river mouth, with the mission of protecting the coast from possible maritime invasions. Its strategic location, close to the mouth and with a direct line of sight over the ocean, is impressive to this day. The granite stonework construction, robust and imposing, is well preserved and gives us that feeling of solidity and permanence that only old works can achieve.

Seguimos a pé até ao jardim que rodeia o forte, um espaço bem cuidado, com palmeiras, relvados e bancos de jardim voltados para o mar. É um local pacífico, com o som das ondas a bater nas rochas ali perto. O Forte, infelizmente, estava encerrado ao público nesse dia, o que me deixou com alguma frustração, tinha esperança de explorar o interior e subir às muralhas para fotografar o oceano visto lá de cima.
Mesmo assim, o exterior já vale a pena por si só. Construído no século XVII, o Forte de Nossa Senhora das Neves fazia parte do sistema defensivo da barra do Douro, tendo como missão proteger a costa de possíveis invasões marítimas. A sua localização estratégica, junto à foz e com linha de visão direta sobre o oceano, é ainda hoje impressionante. A construção em cantaria granítica, robusta e imponente, está bem conservada e transmite-nos aquela sensação de solidez e permanência que só as obras antigas conseguem.

As we walked around the surroundings, I couldn't help but notice the contrast between the old and the modern that characterizes Leça da Palmeira. On one side, the Fort and the lighthouse. On the other, the Port of Leixões, with its enormous containers, cranes and merchant ships, reminding us that this land lived and continues to live from the sea, but that times have changed. It is an area full of marine life, and this is felt in the environment, in the people and even in the smell of the air.
In addition to the Fort, Leça has many other places worth visiting: the Piscina das Marés, designed by Álvaro Siza Vieira, is an icon of modern Portuguese architecture and a place of worship for lovers of the sea and design. The beaches of Leça, with their extensive sands and good waves, are sought after by residents and tourists, especially on summer days. And we cannot forget the Leça Lighthouse, one of the tallest in Portugal, which completes the coastal landscape with grandeur.
I think I've already recorded some of these locations in previous articles.
I promise that next time I go there, I will go into the Fort. Even if I have to go back there with three times the wind.

Enquanto caminhávamos pelos arredores, não pude deixar de notar o contraste entre o antigo e o moderno que caracteriza Leça da Palmeira. De um lado, o Forte e o farol. Do outro, o Porto de Leixões, com os seus enormes contentores, gruas e navios mercantes, a lembrar-nos que esta terra viveu e continua a viver do mar, mas que os tempos mudaram. É uma zona cheia de vida marítima, e isso sente-se no ambiente, nas pessoas e até no cheiro do ar.
Além do Forte, Leça tem muitos outros pontos que merecem uma visita: a Piscina das Marés, desenhada por Álvaro Siza Vieira, é um ícone da arquitetura moderna portuguesa e um local de culto para os amantes do mar e do design. As praias de Leça, com os seus extensos areais e boas ondas, são procuradas por locais e turistas, especialmente nos dias de verão. E não nos podemos esquecer do Farol de Leça, um dos mais altos de Portugal, que completa a paisagem costeira com imponência.

Prometo que da próxima vez que lá for, entro no Forte. Nem que tenha de lá voltar com o triplo do vento.
