An Evening in Yeşilköy Coast, Istanbul (eng-tr)

Last evening, I met one of my favorite friends after her work. I was at home when she called me about an hour before coming. While I was getting ready, she was already on her way to pick me up. We did not have a very fixed plan at first. We just wanted to go somewhere nice, talk, eat something, and enjoy the evening. Then we decided to go to Yeşilköy coast, one of the lively seaside areas of Istanbul.

Geçen akşam, en sevdiğim arkadaşlarımdan biriyle onun iş çıkışında buluştuk. Ben evdeydim ve gelmeden yaklaşık bir saat önce beni aradı. Ben hazırlanana kadar o da beni almak için yola çıkmıştı. Aslında başta çok net bir planımız yoktu. Sadece güzel bir yere gidelim, sohbet edelim, bir şeyler yiyelim ve akşamın tadını çıkaralım istedik. Sonra İstanbul’un canlı sahil bölgelerinden biri olan Yeşilköy sahiline gitmeye karar verdik.

We had been to Yeşilköy once before, but that day was a Friday evening. The whole area was extremely crowded. The streets near the coast are full of cafés, restaurants, and people. Istanbul is already a very crowded city, and in places like this, you feel it even more. Sometimes it feels like almost every lively neighborhood in Istanbul is full, especially when there are cafés, sea views, and young people around. So, that previous visit stayed in our minds because we could not really find a nice place to sit.

Yeşilköy’e daha önce bir kez gitmiştik ama o gün cuma akşamıydı. Bütün bölge inanılmaz kalabalıktı. Sahile yakın sokaklar kafelerle, restoranlarla ve insanlarla doluydu. İstanbul zaten çok kalabalık bir şehir ve böyle yerlerde bunu daha fazla hissediyorsunuz. Bazen İstanbul’da kafelerin, deniz manzarasının ve gençlerin olduğu neredeyse her semt doluymuş gibi geliyor. Bu yüzden önceki gidişimiz biraz içimizde kalmıştı çünkü güzelce oturacak bir yer bulamamıştık.

This time it was a weekday, and it was not Friday. That made the evening a little easier and calmer. We reached Yeşilköy close to sunset. Actually, we wanted to catch the sunset, but first we stopped at a place to eat. My friend treated me to a hamburger, and we had our dinner there. I have been trying to be more careful with my diet recently, so yes, I broke my diet a little that evening. But because I had not eaten too much during the day, I tried to comfort myself with that thought.

Bu sefer hafta içiydi ve cuma günü değildi. Bu da akşamı biraz daha kolay ve sakin hale getirdi. Güneş batmaya yakın Yeşilköy’e vardık. Aslında gün batımını yakalamak istiyorduk ama önce bir yerde yemek yemek için durduk. Arkadaşım bana hamburger ısmarladı ve akşam yemeğimizi orada yedik. Son zamanlarda diyetime daha dikkat etmeye çalışıyorum, bu yüzden evet, o akşam diyeti biraz bozmuş oldum. Ama gün içinde çok fazla yemediğim için kendimi biraz bu düşünceyle teselli ettim.

After eating, we wanted to drink tea. The hamburger place did not serve tea, and we both really wanted a simple Turkish tea. If I had known that we would sit by the seaside, I would probably have brought tea from home. We were a little unprepared because we decided everything on the road. My friend also had foldable chairs in the back of her car, so going to the coast and sitting by the sea felt like a very nice idea.

Yemekten sonra çay içmek istedik. Hamburger yediğimiz yerde çay yoktu ve ikimiz de sade bir Türk çayı içmek istiyorduk. Sahilde oturacağımızı bilseydim büyük ihtimalle evden çay getirirdim. Biraz hazırlıksız yakalandık çünkü her şeye yoldayken karar verdik. Arkadaşımın arabasının arkasında katlanabilir sandalyeler de vardı, bu yüzden sahile gidip deniz kenarında oturmak çok güzel bir fikir gibi geldi.

Before going to the coast, we sat in a café just to drink tea. We ordered two glasses each. Unfortunately, the first glasses were cold, so we asked for another round. The tea was nice, but when the bill came, we really regretted sitting there only for tea. One small glass of tea was 120 TL, which is around 2.57 USD. For four small glasses, we paid 480 TL, around 10.27 USD. For Istanbul, prices are becoming really surprising. Sometimes the city feels like it is competing with London.

Sahile gitmeden önce sadece çay içmek için bir kafeye oturduk. İkişer bardak çay söyledik. Maalesef ilk bardaklar soğuk geldi, bu yüzden ikinci kez istedik. Çay güzeldi ama hesap gelince sadece çay için oraya oturduğumuza gerçekten pişman olduk. Küçücük bir bardak çay 120 TL, yani yaklaşık 2.57 dolardı. Dört küçük bardak çaya 480 TL, yani yaklaşık 10.27 dolar ödedik. İstanbul’da fiyatlar gerçekten şaşırtıcı olmaya başladı. Bazen şehir Londra ile yarışıyor gibi hissettiriyor.

After that expensive tea break, we left the café and walked toward the seaside. On the way, we bought water, sunflower seeds, some chocolate, and coffee. By the time we reached the coast, the sun had already gone down. We missed the sunset, but the sky was still beautiful. The colors were soft, calm, and peaceful. There were boats in the distance, people walking, children playing, and families sitting on the grass. Even after sunset, Yeşilköy still had a very lively atmosphere.

Bu pahalı çay molasından sonra kafeden kalktık ve sahile doğru yürüdük. Yolda su, çekirdek, biraz çikolata ve kahve aldık. Sahile vardığımızda güneş çoktan batmıştı. Gün batımını kaçırdık ama gökyüzü hâlâ çok güzeldi. Renkler yumuşak, sakin ve huzurluydu. Uzakta tekneler vardı, insanlar yürüyordu, çocuklar oynuyordu ve aileler çimlerde oturuyordu. Güneş batmış olmasına rağmen Yeşilköy hâlâ çok canlıydı.

We found a grassy area where we could see the sea and the boats. It was not completely quiet, but it was good enough for us. We opened our small picnic things and started to enjoy the view. I drank my coffee, ate some sunflower seeds, and of course tasted the chocolate too. Again, I felt a little guilty because of my diet, but I also know that one evening cannot destroy a whole journey. Sometimes life is also about small moments, friendship, and enjoying the view in front of you.

Denizi ve tekneleri görebileceğimiz çimenlik bir alan bulduk. Tamamen sessiz değildi ama bizim için yeterince güzeldi. Küçük atıştırmalıklarımızı açtık ve manzaranın tadını çıkarmaya başladık. Kahvemi içtim, biraz çekirdek yedim ve tabii ki çikolatadan da tattım. Yine diyetten dolayı biraz suçluluk hissettim ama biliyorum ki bir akşam bütün süreci bozmaz. Bazen hayat biraz da küçük anlardan, arkadaşlıktan ve önündeki manzaranın tadını çıkarmaktan ibaret.

There was only one thing that disturbed the atmosphere a little. After we sat down, a couple started singing very loudly nearby, probably to collect money. Maybe they had permission because there were police officers around and nobody stopped them. But the music was very loud, and it had a heavy arabesque style. It was not really our mood. We wanted to relax, talk quietly, and listen to the sea, but the sound made the place feel more like a noisy tavern than a peaceful seaside evening.

Ortamı biraz bozan tek bir şey vardı. Biz oturduktan sonra yakınımızda bir çift çok yüksek sesle şarkı söylemeye başladı, muhtemelen para toplamak için. Belki izinleri vardı çünkü etrafta polisler vardı ve kimse onlara engel olmadı. Ama müzik çok yüksekti ve ağır bir arabesk tarzı vardı. Bu pek bizim modumuza uygun değildi. Biz dinlenmek, sakince konuşmak ve denizi dinlemek istemiştik ama o ses orayı huzurlu bir sahil akşamından çok gürültülü bir meyhane havasına çevirdi.

Still, we stayed there for about two hours. Even with the noise, we had a very nice conversation. Sometimes the place is not perfect, the food is not perfect, the prices are not perfect, but the person next to you makes the day beautiful. That evening was like that. We talked, watched the people, looked at the boats, and slowly saw the sky becoming darker. Then the full moon appeared. It was not a red moon, but its color was very beautiful. It made the night feel special.

Yine de orada yaklaşık iki saat kaldık. Gürültüye rağmen çok güzel sohbet ettik. Bazen mekan mükemmel olmaz, yemek mükemmel olmaz, fiyatlar mükemmel olmaz ama yanınızdaki insan günü güzelleştirir. O akşam biraz böyleydi. Konuştuk, insanları izledik, teknelere baktık ve gökyüzünün yavaş yavaş kararmasını seyrettik. Sonra dolunay ortaya çıktı. Kanlı dolunay değildi ama rengi çok güzeldi. Geceye özel bir hava kattı.

Yeşilköy had always sounded more elegant in my mind. I imagined it as a more calm and refined seaside area. There are beautiful houses and villas around, and the streets have a nice old Istanbul feeling. But that evening, I also saw another side of it. It was very crowded, noisy, and a little more ordinary than I expected. Of course, it is beautiful that the coast is open to everyone. Public spaces should be for everyone. But personally, I could not get the peaceful feeling I was expecting.

Yeşilköy benim zihnimde hep daha zarif bir yer gibi duruyordu. Daha sakin ve daha seçkin bir sahil bölgesi olarak hayal ediyordum. Etrafta güzel evler ve villalar var, sokaklarda hoş bir eski İstanbul havası hissediliyor. Ama o akşam başka bir tarafını da gördüm. Çok kalabalık, gürültülü ve beklediğimden biraz daha sıradandı. Tabii ki sahilin herkese açık olması çok güzel. Kamusal alanlar herkes için olmalı. Ama kişisel olarak beklediğim o huzurlu hissi tam alamadım.

When I compare it with Büyükçekmece coast, I think Büyükçekmece felt better for me. It was wider, calmer, and more relaxing. Yeşilköy is still beautiful, especially with its cafés, lights, old houses, seaside road, seagulls, and boats. But maybe that evening was not the best time for a quiet experience. Maybe next time, I should go earlier, bring my own tea, choose a quieter corner, and catch the sunset before it disappears.

Büyükçekmece sahiliyle kıyasladığımda, sanırım Büyükçekmece bana daha iyi gelmişti. Daha geniş, daha sakin ve daha dinlendiriciydi. Yeşilköy yine de güzel; kafeleriyle, ışıklarıyla, eski evleriyle, sahil yoluyla, martılarıyla ve tekneleriyle hoş bir yer. Ama belki de o akşam sessiz bir deneyim için en doğru zaman değildi. Belki bir dahaki sefere daha erken gitmeli, kendi çayımı götürmeli, daha sakin bir köşe seçmeli ve güneş batmadan önce orada olmalıyım.

At the end of the evening, we packed our things, walked back to the car, and returned home. It was not a perfect evening, but it was a real Istanbul evening. A little expensive, a little crowded, a little noisy, but still full of small memories. A hamburger, cold tea, an expensive bill, missed sunset, coffee on the grass, boats, full moon, and a good friend… Sometimes these mixed moments become the stories we remember later with a smile.

Akşamın sonunda eşyalarımızı topladık, arabaya doğru yürüdük ve eve döndük. Mükemmel bir akşam değildi ama gerçek bir İstanbul akşamıydı. Biraz pahalı, biraz kalabalık, biraz gürültülü ama yine de küçük anılarla doluydu. Bir hamburger, soğuk çay, pahalı bir hesap, kaçırılmış gün batımı, çimlerde kahve, tekneler, dolunay ve iyi bir arkadaş… Bazen bu karışık anlar, sonradan gülümseyerek hatırladığımız hikayelere dönüşüyor.
