Krakow's churches no.25 – St. Mark's Church in Krakow

_DSC6846.JPG

[ENG]
One of the more inconspicuous, yet extraordinary churches in Kraków is St. Mark's Church, hidden right next to Planty, at the intersection of the street of the same name and Sławkowska Street. It remains somewhat in the shadow of more famous Kraków temples, but its walls remember ancient histories. Its beginnings date back to the mid-13th century. The foundation is attributed to Prince Bolesław the Chaste and St. Kinga, who donated this area to the Regular Canons of St. Augustine. This was during the reconstruction of Kraków after the Tatar invasions, and the construction of the new church was to be a symbol of hope and the rebirth of the city.

Initially, the church was typically Gothic both inside and out. Currently, only its exterior has retained its typically Gothic character, while everything inside has taken on a Baroque decor. Inside, attention is drawn to the Gothic vaults and very heavily decorated altars, where the main altar is dominated by a painting of St. Mark the Evangelist with an accompanying lion symbolizing faith and courage.

St. Mark the Evangelist is only the patron of this temple, but the history of another saint is very closely linked to the temple, namely, it was here that one of the most extraordinary mystics of Krakow lived and worked - St. Michael Giedroyć. He was a monk of the Canons Regular, known for his humility and extraordinary piety. Despite a serious illness and disability, he served others throughout his life. It is said that he had the gift of bilocation and that he performed miracles during his lifetime. He died in the opinion of sanctity in 1485, and his cult has survived to this day. A beautiful legend of a miraculous healing is also associated with St. Giedroyć and the church of St. Mark. One day, a paralyzed boy who had been unable to walk for years was brought to the sacristy. Giedroyć prayed over him and then touched his legs. And then something extraordinary happened. The child stood up and began to walk on his own. Witnesses later said that this miracle shook the whole of Krakow and further strengthened people's faith in the sanctity of the humble monk. The tomb of St. Michael Giedroyc has been preserved in St. Mark's Church to this day. People still come here, pray by his relics, asking for healing, comfort or simple help in everyday matters.

Augustyna.
Z świętym Giedroyciem i kościołem św. Dziecko wstało i zaczęło chodzić o własnych siłach. Świadkowie opowiadali potem, że cud ten wstrząsnął całym Krakowem i jeszcze bardziej umocnił wiarę ludzi w świętość skromnego zakonnika. Do dziś w kościele św.
