Few posts about Armenia no.3 – Orbelian Caravanserai

Every hitchhiker dreamed of hitchhiking as often seen in American movies, i.e. on the back of a pick-up truck. It was in Armenia that we managed to do it for the first time, and not just anywhere but in the biblical paradise. The plan was simple: get from the southern shores of Lake Sevan through the mountains and the Sulema Pass. on the border of gegharkunik and vajocdzorna provinces, straight to the plains of south-western Armenia, where we were supposed to visit one of the more beautifully situated old historic monasteries. When an old pickup truck driven by two young farmers stopped after us, our eyes lit up, because we knew that an interesting adventure was about to begin. Driving the national road number M10, our drivers stopped at some point to show us an extremely interesting building. Orbelian Caravanserai is a travel service point established in 1332. At that time, numerous caravans included in the Silk Road traveled along this road and so that getting through these great rugged mountains was a little easier. The medieval service point is located at a considerable height of 2,410 meters above sea level and is the best preserved building of this type in Armenia. Unfortunately, the form in which we can admire it today is the result of a thorough reconstruction from 1956-1959. An additional excuse to visit this place is the wonderful view that we can admire from it.

Każdy autostopowicz marzył o tym aby przejechać się autostopem tak jak to często widzi się na amerykańskich filmach czyli na pace samochodu pick-up. Właśnie w Armenii udało nam się to pierwszy raz i to nie byle gdzie tylko w biblijnym raju. Plan był prosty: przedostać się znad południowych brzegów jeziora Sewan poprzez góry i przełęcz Sulema. na granicy prowincji gegharkunik i prowincji wajocdzorna prosto na równiny południowo zachodniej Armenii gdzie mieliśmy odwiedzić jeden piękniej położony starych zabytkowych klasztorów. Gdy zatrzymał się po nas stary pickup kierowany przez dwóch młodych rolników oczy nam się zaświeciły, bo wiedzieliśmy, że zaczyna się ciekawa przygoda. Jadąc drogą krajową numer M10 nasi kierowcy zatrzymali się w pewnym momencie aby pokazać nam niezwykle ciekawą budowlę. Orbelian Caravanserai to powstały w roku 1332 punkt obsługi podróżnych. Wówczas po tej drodze wędrowały liczne karawany wchodzące w skład jedwabnego szlaku i aby przedostanie się przez te wielkie surowe góry było trochę łatwiejsze. Średniowieczny punkt obsługi podróżnych znajduje się na niebagatelnej wysokości 2410 metrów nad poziomem morza i jest najlepiej zachowana tego typu budowla w całej Armenii. Niestety Forma w której go obecnie możemy podziwiać to efekt gruntownej odbudowy z okresu 1956-1959. Dodatkowym pretekstem na odwiedzenie tego miejsca jest wspaniały widok jaki możemy z niego podziwiać.

At the beginning of the text I mentioned that our journey took place in a biblical paradise and these were not just empty words. We know that four rivers flowed from paradise, two of which are well known to all of us, the Tigris and the Euphrates, and yet the sources of both rivers are only a few dozen kilometers from this place. There is another theory that the biblical paradise is located between the three great Armenian seas, i.e. in an area roughly in the shape of an equilateral triangle with a side length of 100 km. Both theories only confirm that this region of Armenia is unique and being there one can believe that the paradise garden of Eden was located somewhere here. The landscape generally looks like this: very dry and rugged mountains, while the valleys between these mountains are filled with all kinds of greenery irrigated by numerous small, clean streams. There are many fruit trees in the valleys, but most of them are pomegranates. For me, it is one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Na początku tekstu wspomniałem, że nasza podróż odbywał się po biblijnym raju i nie były to tylko puste słowa. Wiemy, że z raju wypływały cztery rzeki, z których dwie to są dobrze nam wszystkim znane Tygrys i Eufrat, a przecież źródła obu rzek znajdują się zaledwie kilkadziesiąt kilometrów od tego miejsca. Jest jeszcze inna teoria mówiąca, że biblijny raj położony jest między trzema wielkimi ormiańskimi morzami, czyli w obszarze o kształcie mniej więcej w trójkąta równobocznego o długości boku wynoszącym 100km. Obie teorie potwierdzają tylko, że ten rejon ArmeniI jest wyjątkowy i będąc tam jest się w stanie uwierzyć, że to właśnie gdzieś tutaj był położony rajski ogród Eden. Krajobraz generalnie wygląda tak: bardzo suche i surowe góry, natomiast doliny między tymi górami są przepełnione wszelką zielenią nawadnianą przez liczne małe, czyste strumyczki. W dolinkach rośnie bardzo dużo drzew owocowych, ale najwięcej jest granatów. Dla mnie jest to jeden z najpiękniejszych zakątków na ziemi.
