Let's tour the Historic Center of Cumaná

Yesterday afternoon I had to go out to run some errands in the Historic Center of Cumaná, Sucre state, the city where I live, and I took the opportunity to take some photos while walking through those colorful streets full of history and art.

Anyone who visits Cumaná, the capital of Sucre state, a state in northern Venezuela, should explore this historic area of the city, which not only preserves colonial houses with restored architecture, but also features national monuments and museums that bear witness to the historical past of our state.

Cualquiera que visite Cumaná, la capital del estado Sucre, un estado en el norte de Venezuela, debería explorar esta zona histórica de la ciudad, que no solo conserva casas coloniales con arquitectura restaurada, sino que también cuenta con monumentos nacionales y museos que dan testimonio del pasado histórico de nuestro estado.

Although this area has undergone some changes and restorations, the architecture of almost all the houses remains almost intact, so it is common to see homes with large windows, tall wooden doors, houses with long corridors, and internal gardens. They are large houses with high ceilings, where the breeze flows through the hallways and drives away the heat that strikes this city where the sun rises punctually for all 12 months of the year.

In this colonial area there are many alleys, all restored, some leading to the Manzanare River, which flows quietly on the other side of the road, and behind the historic center. They are beautiful alleys, some with shade, ideal for pedestrians looking to shelter from the sun and seeking shortcuts among so many long streets.

En esta zona colonial hay muchos callejones, todos restaurados, algunos que conducen al río Manzanares, que fluye tranquilamente al otro lado de la carretera, y detrás del centro histórico. Son callejones hermosos, algunos con sombra, ideales para los peatones que buscan protegerse del sol y buscan atajos entre tantas calles largas.

Last year they flooded the walls of this area with paintings or murals by artists from all over the country. Result: picturesque, beautiful streets, full of known and imagined characters, in which not only art stands out but also the feelings of our people, their colors, their idiosyncrasy.

El año pasado inundaron las paredes de esta zona con pinturas o murales de artistas de todo el país. Resultado: calles pintorescas y hermosas, llenas de personajes conocidos e imaginarios, en las que no solo destaca el arte, sino también los sentimientos de nuestra gente, sus colores, su idiosincrasia.

The streets of this area of Cumaná are long, narrow, and one-way, which speak of a time when there were not so many vehicles in the city and where, perhaps, walking served to socialize, share, and move from one place to another.

Las calles de esta zona de Cumaná son largas, estrechas y de un solo sentido, lo que habla de una época en la que no había tantos vehículos en la ciudad y donde, quizás, caminar servía para socializar, compartir y moverse de un lugar a otro.

Among the places you will find, right in the center, is the Church of Saint Agnes, which is not only home to the patron saint of the city, Saint Agnes, but also to Catholic parishioners who attend Mass daily. There, its bells, punctual, become an echo and belong to the emotional memory of anyone who has been on those streets of God.

Entre los lugares que encontrarás, justo en el centro, está la Iglesia de Santa Inés, que no solo alberga a la patrona de la ciudad, Santa Inés, sino también a los feligreses católicos que asisten a misa diariamente. Allí, sus campanas, puntuales, se convierten en un eco y pertenecen a la memoria emocional de cualquiera que haya estado en esas calles de Dios.

You will also find the birthplaces of Andrés Eloy Blanco and José Antonio Ramos Sucre, eminent and glorious poets from the state of Sucre. Their houses, turned into museums, centers for study and reflection, are a display of the cultural life that is felt in this area. Likewise, government entities, state centers or administrative offices, museums, and even the city's general library also operate there.

También encontrarán las casas natales de Andrés Eloy Blanco y José Antonio Ramos Sucre, eminentes y gloriosos poetas del estado Sucre. Sus casas, convertidas en museos, centros de estudio y reflexión, son una muestra de la vida cultural que se respira en esta zona. Asimismo, en esta zona también funcionan entidades gubernamentales, centros estatales u oficinas administrativas, museos e incluso la biblioteca general de la ciudad.

Similarly, the historic center of Cumaná has a variety of hotels and inns for all tastes, affordable, preferred by foreigners and locals not only for their prices, but also for their strategic and central location, which allows easier access to restaurants, shopping centers, market, and bars.

De manera similar, el centro histórico de Cumaná cuenta con una variedad de hoteles y posadas para todos los gustos, asequibles, preferidos por extranjeros y locales no solo por sus precios, sino también por su ubicación estratégica y céntrica, que permite un acceso más fácil a restaurantes, centros comerciales, mercados y bares.

The colonial center offers public places, such as squares, full of leafy trees, iron and concrete benches, which serve for meeting, reading, but also for displays of cultural and artistic activities such as dance, theater, concerts, and even exhibitions. There are also small bars and cafés, which serve to watch the time pass and to sigh for love.

El centro colonial ofrece espacios públicos, como plazas, llenas de árboles frondosos, bancos de hierro y concreto, que sirven para reunirse, leer, pero también para muestras de actividades culturales y artísticas como danza, teatro, conciertos e incluso exposiciones. También hay pequeños bares y cafés, que sirven para observar el paso del tiempo y suspirar por amores.

It should be said that currently there is an effort to reactivate and revitalize the city's colonial quarter and for both locals and visitors to understand its historical value. I can proudly say that it is one of the most emblematic and interesting places you could visit if you come to Cumaná, not only because it preserves the beauty of the past, but also for everything you can learn, see, and understand, historically speaking. It is an indescribable visual and sensory experience that you should not miss.

Cabe decir que actualmente hay un esfuerzo por reactivar y revitalizar el barrio colonial de la ciudad y para que tanto los locales como los visitantes comprendan su valor histórico. Puedo decir con orgullo que es uno de los lugares más emblemáticos e interesantes que podrías visitar si vienes a Cumaná, no solo porque conserva la belleza del pasado, sino también por todo lo que puedes aprender, ver y comprender, históricamente hablando. Es una experiencia visual y sensorial indescriptible que no debes perderte.
