Last Tuesday, we left very early for one of the most colorful and beautiful coastal towns—in my opinion, the most beautiful—in the state of Sucre: Río Caribe.

El martes pasado salimos muy temprano hacia uno de los pueblos costeros más coloridos y hermosos —en mi opinión, el más hermoso— del estado de Sucre: Río Caribe.

We left from the Cumaná bus terminal. The plan was to take a car or bus to Carúpano and from there another car to Río Caribe. We found out that there's a bus that comes from Caracas, makes a stop in Cumaná, and then continues to Carúpano. The good thing about this option is that the fare is $5; the bad thing is that it doesn't leave until 6:00 a.m., so you have to get up early. Since that option didn't suit us, we preferred to take an express car that charges $15 per passenger.

Descubrimos que hay un autobús que viene de Caracas, para en Cumaná y luego continúa hasta Carúpano. Lo bueno de esta opción es que el pasaje cuesta $5; lo malo es que no sale hasta las 6:00 a. m., así que hay que madrugar. Como esa opción no nos convenía, preferimos tomar un auto exprés que cobra $15 por pasajero.

After arriving in Carúpano, we took another car to Río Caribe, which cost us a little over a dollar. Like most of the roads that cross eastern Venezuela, these roads are perfect for admiring the Caribbean Sea, as it's an integral part of the landscape. But also, in this case, the lush, green vegetation of this area.

The entrance to Río Caribe is very beautiful, not only because of its long and lovely boardwalk, which I'll talk about in a separate post, but also because of its beautiful main square and its incredible, beautiful, and unmistakable palm trees, which not only adorn the place but also provide shade for those who want to sit in it.

After that, we went to the inn, left our things, and went out. Although I've been to Río Caribe many times, it's always nice to walk its streets again and explore every corner. Its houses with colonial architecture and clean, long streets are inviting to be seen and explored.

Río Caribe was founded in 1713 and was originally named San Miguel de Río Caribe. Its beautiful church was built in 1717 in honor of Saint Michael the Archangel, its patron saint. This church is truly beautiful inside and out, and, as far as we could tell, the remains of Dr. Alonso Ruiz and Juan Manuel Cajigal, another man of science, rest here.

Río Caribe fue fundada en 1713 y originalmente se llamaba San Miguel de Río Caribe. Su hermosa iglesia fue construida en 1717 en honor a San Miguel Arcángel, su santo patrón. Around the main church are Bolívar Square, which, as I've mentioned before, exists in every town in Venezuela, and the square dedicated to Francisco de Miranda, another great national hero. These well-maintained and clean squares offer a sense of peace and security.

After that, we went to explore the whole town. The idea was to see the Christ the King monument, but it was impossible. However, we did manage to see the cemetery, some restaurants, and the permanent fairgrounds, which are located in the town and operate year-round.

Río Caribe is famous not only for its people, but also for its chorizo, its beaches, and its cacao, considered among the best in Venezuela. There are many shops here that sell cacao in all its forms and preparations: cacao liqueur, cacao wine, cacao powder, and cacao cream. So if you come to this town, it would be a shame to leave without buying or tasting the local cacao.

Río Caribe es famoso no solo por su gente, sino también por su chorizo, sus playas y su cacao, considerado uno de los mejores de Venezuela. Aquí encontrarás numerosas tiendas que venden cacao en todas sus formas y preparaciones: licor de cacao, vino de cacao, cacao en polvo y crema de cacao. Así que, si vienes a este pueblo, sería una pena irte sin comprar o probar el cacao local.

Since we wanted to have some beers and watch the sunset, we headed to the Plaza Sucre, the main square you see as you enter the town. This square was recently transformed by the artist Patricia van Dalen, who filled it with vibrant colors. At the time, there was a dance therapy session and some athletes warming up. This is the perfect square to meet up and enjoy a pleasant time.

Como queríamos tomar unas cervezas y ver la puesta de sol, nos dirigimos a la Plaza Sucre, la plaza principal que se ve al entrar al pueblo. Esta plaza fue transformada recientemente por la artista Patricia van Dalen, quien la llenó de colores vibrantes. En ese momento, había una sesión de bailoterapia y algunos atletas estaban calentando. Es la plaza perfecta para reunirse y pasar un rato agradable.

Around 5:30, the sun began to set, painting the sky with vibrant and breathtaking colors. By 6:40, the colors had completely filled the sky and become even more vivid. With that spectacle, we could only be grateful to be alive and to have the joy of ending the day in such an incredible way.
