“José Gregorio Hernández” House Museum Caracas, VEN [ENG-ESP] 🏛️✨

Another adventure has brought me back here; this time, my steps led me to the José Gregorio Hernández Museum, located in the picturesque streets of La Pastora in Caracas. It is none other than one of the houses where this beloved Venezuelan doctor once lived—a figure who has been the object of deep popular devotion. Today, this space has been transformed into a beautiful museum. So join me on this tour!

Otra aventura me trae de vueltas por aquí, esta vez mis pasos me llevaron hasta el Museo José Gregorio Hernández, ubicado en las pintorescas calles de La Pastora en Caracas. Y se trata nada más y nada menos que de una de las casas donde vivió este recordado médico venezolano y cuya figura ha sido objeto de profunda devoción popular. Hoy, este espacio ha sido convertido en un hermoso museo. ¡Así que acompáñame en este recorrido!
The museum is decorated with period wooden furniture that transports you back to the Caracas of yesteryear. During the tour, you can see the recreated living room, office, and bedroom. The exhibition also features objects such as José Gregorio Hernández’s iconic hat, his briefcase, a vintage telephone, old water jars, and numerous portraits of him hanging on the walls.
El museo está decorado con muebles de madera de la época que te transportan a la Caracas de antier. Durante el recorrido, se aprecia lo que replicaron como la sala, el consultorio y la habitación. Además, se exponen objetos como el icónico sombrero de José Gregorio Hernández, su maletín, un teléfono de la época, antiguos tinajeros y numerosos retratos de él colgados en las paredes.

There is also a small shop that sells everything from holy cards, mugs, and thermoses to T-shirts, figurines, and decorative prints—all, of course, featuring José Gregorio.
También, se encuentra una pequeña tienda donde venden desde estampitas, tazas y termos, hasta franelas , figuras y cuadritos decorativos; todo, por supuesto, alusivo a José Gregorio.
Then I moved on to the most impressive part of the museum: the Archaeological Site. This area displays the actual foundations and remains of the old house; the best part of the experience is that you walk along a walkway and can look down through a glass floor, offering a view of the original layout of the house where she spent the last years of her life alongside her sister.
Luego pasé a la parte más impresionante del museo: el Sitio Arqueológico. Este espacio muestra los cimientos y restos reales de la antigua estructura de la casa; lo mejor de la experiencia es que caminas sobre una pasarela y puedes ver a través de un piso de vidrio, ofreciendo una vista de la distribución original de la casa donde pasó sus últimos años de vida al lado de su hermana.
If you walk a little further along the walkway, you’ll come across the “Oratorio,” a place where community members and the general public gather to pray the Rosary on certain days of the week, and where others can enjoy musical concerts. Another thing that really caught my attention was seeing, on one of its walls, the messages of gratitude that people leave for favors granted. There are doctors’ scrubs, plaques, medals, photos of children, and a bunch of little notes and handwritten letters
Caminando un poco más por la pasarela, te topas con el "Oratorio", en donde los vecinos de la comunidad y el público general se juntan a rezar el Rosario ciertos días de la semana y otros pueden disfrutar de conciertos musicales. Otra cosa que me llamó muchísimo la atención fue ver en una de sus paredes los testimonios de agradecimiento que dejan las personas por los favores concedidos. Hay batas de médicos, placas, medallas, fotitos de niños y un montón de papelitos y cartas escritas a mano.
I was lucky that my visit coincided with a performance by a children’s choir, so I sat down to listen to them in the Oratory, even though it felt hot in there because the sun was shining directly off the chairs. One detail that amazed me was that, as I sat there, I could see the house’s foundation through the glass, right beneath my feet.
Tuve la suerte de que mi visita coincidió con la presentación de un Coro de niños, así que me senté a escucharlos en el Oratorio, aunque el área se sentía calurosa, porque el sol se reflejaba directo en las sillas. Acá, un detalle que me asombró fue que, mientras estaba allí sentada, podía ver los cimientos de la casa a través del vidrio, justo bajo mis pies.
After enjoying that moment and eager to keep exploring, I learned that there’s a café on the upper level of the museum. This time, I didn’t go up to check it out, because after the concert ended, the children and their chaperones gathered there for a snack, and I preferred to keep walking.
And then I came to what would turn out to be my favorite part of the place: the gardens. Even though they weren't very large, it felt very cool there, and the medium-sized shrubs and the contrast of the red-leaved plants gave the place a special beauty.
Luego de disfrutar ese momento y con ganas de seguir explorando, supe que en la parte alta del museo se encuentra una cafetería, esta vez no subí a conocerla, porque al terminar el concierto los niños y sus representantes se reunieron allí para compartir un refrigerio y yo preferí seguir caminando.
Y llegué, a lo que sería mi parte favorita del lugar: los jardines; a pesar de no ser muy grandes, acá sí se podía sentir muy fresco, además los arbustos medianos y el contraste de las plantas de hojas rojas le daban una belleza especial al lugar.
And to wrap up this tour, this house-museum features a cozy living room. It’s the perfect place to sit down, chat, and share your impressions of the visit. I didn’t miss the chance to sit down and take a photo as a keepsake, and I’m already looking forward to my next visit to enjoy a cup of coffee there.

No tenia idea que habia un museo para Jose Gregorio, no soy fiel seguidor de santos pero si de historia y todos conocemos que segun fue atropellado por el unico carro de Venzuela 😅 no se si es verdad pero es lo que se cree
