Discovering the Sea Wall Archaeological Park [Eng/Esp]

Today I want to invite you to join me on this journey of exploration and discovery of archaeological remains. If you enjoy learning about the stories that have been hidden for centuries beneath our feet, follow me on this adventure through the Sea Wall Archaeological Park.

Today, in the middle of a summer day, I went for an early walk along Port Avenue, letting myself be carried away by the breeze and the pleasant smell of the sea. Suddenly, my gaze fell upon something unexpected. Curious, I approached, and a sign read: " Sea Wall Archaeological Park." Immediately, I knew I had found a treasure.

It's a historic site where the remains of the ancient maritime wall that protected the city during the colonial era are exhibited. And best of all: it's there, visible to all, integrated into the modern city in the most respectful and fascinating way.

To understand the importance of these ancient stone walls, we have to mentally travel back a few centuries. In the 1600s, the city was the jewel of the Spanish crown in the Caribbean, the meeting point for the fleets that carried the riches of the Americas to Europe. For this reason, it was said that Havana was the key to the New World. This attracted the attention of corsairs and pirates. Therefore, the Spanish Empire decided to build the wall as a defensive system.

This maritime wall was only part of a larger fortification that surrounded the entire city and stretched for almost 5 kilometers. However, cities grow and transform. By the 19th century, the wall was no longer a defensive necessity, but a barrier that prevented urban expansion. Therefore, it was demolished, and by the 20th century, it was buried under the asphalt of the new avenues. Thanks to archaeological work, these forgotten vestiges were discovered.

Walking through the park is an incredible experience. Access is by foot, via wooden bridges and walkways, allowing us to observe the remains from all angles, without damaging them and experiencing the excitement of a discovery.

Among the most impressive finds are 10 cannons from the Barrios foundry, from the 19th century, placed in what was called the Cortina de Valdés. Curiously, according to experts, they were never used for military purposes.

The remains of the first fish market located here are also on display in the park. I closed my eyes and visualized the fishermen unloading their cargo, enveloped in the smell of fresh fish.

It is fascinating to walk among these archaeological gems. These remains are testaments to our colonial history and also a reminder that beneath our feet there must still be thousands of stories to be discovered and told.

The presence of boat-shaped benches and candle decorations provide a very pleasant atmosphere in keeping with the exhibits, allowing us to sit and admire this beautiful ancient landscape.

I like the way it has integrated with today's world; it's an example of how heritage can be preserved without sacrificing development.

Descubriendo el Parque arqueológico Muralla de Mar

Hoy quiero invitarte a que me acompañes en este recorrido de exploración y descubrimiento de restos arqueológicos. Si te gusta conocer las historias que han estado escondidas por siglos a nuestros pies, sígueme en esta aventura por el Parque Arqueológico Muralla de Mar.

Hoy, en pleno día de verano salí a caminar temprano por la Avenida del Puerto, dejándome llevar por la brisa y el agradable olor a mar. De pronto mi vista se topó con algo inesperado. Me acerqué curiosa y en un cartel se podía leer: “Parque Arqueológico Muralla de Mar”. Inmediatamente, supe que había encontrado un tesoro.

Es un sitio histórico donde se exhiben los restos de la antigua muralla marítima que protegía la ciudad durante la época colonial. Y lo mejor de todo: está ahí, a la vista de todos, integrado en la ciudad moderna de la manera más respetuosa y fascinante.

Para entender la importancia de estos viejos muros de piedra, tenemos que viajar mentalmente unos cuantos siglos atrás. En el 1600 la ciudad era la joya de la corona española en el Caribe, el punto de reunión de las flotas que llevaban las riquezas de América hacia Europa. Por eso se decía que La Habana era la llave del nuevo mundo. Esto atraía la atención de corsarios y piratas. Por eso, el Imperio Español decidió construir la muralla como un sistema defensivo.

Esta muralla marítima era solo una parte de una fortificación más grande que rodeaba toda la ciudad, y se extendía a lo largo de casi 5 kilómetros. Sin embargo, las ciudades crecen y se transforman. Para el siglo XIX, la muralla ya no era una necesidad defensiva, sino una barrera que impedía la expansión urbana. Por lo que fue demolida y ya en el siglo XX fue sepultada bajo el asfalto de las nuevas avenidas. Gracias a los trabajos arqueológicos se descubrieron estos vestigios olvidados.

Caminar por el parque es una experiencia increíble. El acceso es peatonal, a través de puentes y pasarelas de madera podemos observar los restos desde todos los ángulos, sin dañarlas y viviendo la emoción de un descubrimiento.

Entre los hallazgos más impresionantes están 10 cañones de la fundición Barrios, del siglo XIX, colocados en lo que se llamaba la Cortina de Valdés. Lo curioso es que, según los expertos, nunca fueron utilizados con fines bélicos.

En el parque también se exhiben los restos de la primera Pescadería que estaba ubicada aquí. Cerré mis ojos y visualicé a los pescadores descargando su mercancía envueltos en el olor a pescado fresco.

Es fascinante caminar entre estas joyas arqueológicas, estos restos son testimonios de nuestra historia colonial y además un recordatorio de que bajo nuestros pies aún debe haber miles de historias por ser descubiertas y contadas.

La presencia de bancos en forma de botes y las decoraciones de velas nos proporcionan un ambiente muy agradable a tono con lo expuesto, de esta forma nos podemos sentar a admirar este hermoso paisaje ancestral.

Me gusta la forma en que se ha integrado con el mundo actual, es un ejemplo de cómo se puede conservar el patrimonio sin renunciar al desarrollo.

Si andas por la Avenida del Puerto, no olvides desviar la mirada del mar por un instante y contemplar este parque, es darle una mirada al pasado desde el presente.
