Pico do Arieiro Hike

avatar

This is part two of two, of our final hike on the Madeira island of Portugal. For part one please see my previous post Above the Clouds.

20220512_120940~2.jpg

You may be asking yourself why I didn't just combine the two posts into one and to that I would say that posting 100 photos and over 2000 words is just too excessive for one article. I take too many pictures and have too much to say, I guess I just can't help myself. The hike also includes two different mountain peaks, which means that I can put two different markers onto my #Pinmapple map, and anyone who uses the Pinmapple site knows that there is something extremely satisfying about having a lot of pins on a map. That being said, new photos, new stories and new pins ultimately results in a new post. But, why do I feel the need to justify myself? Let's get back to the hike itself.

20220512_121452~2.jpg

The hike in this direction begins at the peak of the Ruivo mountain. You would actually start at the canteen restaurant located a little ways down from the peak if you were starting on this side of the mountain range.

20220512_123411~2.jpg

For this hike some people travel in one direction, and some the other. It really just depends on where they are staying on the island (i.e. the North, South, East or West). See my last post for more details on that.

20220512_123419~2.jpg

We found the begining of the way back to be fairly easy at first.

20220512_124948~2.jpg

It started out mostly downhill, followed by a long stretch of flat trails.

20220512_125615~3.jpg

At one point along the way we saw this woman and her two young kids a little ways ahead of us. One of the children was around 6-8 years old and the other was probably around 4. The woman was carrying the younger one in her arms and singing kids songs. They all looked super happy to be outdoors getting some exercise.

20220512_124645~2.jpg

I was quite impressed by them and almost in awe at their spirits. The hike wasn't exactly easy, so the fact that young children were doing it was impressive, not to mention the woman carrying one of the children in her arms.

20220512_124304~2.jpg

We paused for a spell to take some photos, drink some water and have a little break while the three of them proceeded ahead.

20220512_111331~2.jpg

We caught up to them about 10-15 minutes later and funny enough, it seemed that things had changed drastically in just that short amount of time. The little one was now walking on her own crying and screaming her head off while the mom, looking somewhat desperate, scolded her quietly, telling her that she had to walk on her own and keep on moving. Carrying a 4 year old uphill is a lot of work, I don't blame her at all.

20220512_132700~2.jpg

Actually, the scene made much more sense to me than the previous one. When I think of young children going on an hour and a half to two hour hike up and downhill in the heat of the afternoon, a scene of screaming kids seems much more plausible then one of them merrily singing songs and being happy.

20220512_134756~2.jpg

Me to my wife: "Let's make a strong push to pass them on this next curve. I don't want to listen to that racket any longer than I have to."

20220512_135604~2.jpg

Now picture me wearing a small jetpack or riding a magic broom zooming past the three of them. Vrrrrooooooooooommmmm - "So long suckers!"

20220512_134851~2.jpg

Me cackling to myself: "Just wait until they reach the uphill portion and all of those stairs!... Poor bastards."

20220512_133605~2.jpg

I know, I know...what can I say? I'm a horrible person.

20220512_130845~2.jpg

We still had to go down at this point before we could even begin to head back up.

20220512_133351~2.jpg

And there was a shit ton of down to go.

20220512_130329~2.jpg

Nice spot for a picnic. Such a great view.

20220512_133038~2.jpg

Oh fuck. Here comes the slog.

20220512_135958~2.jpg

My wife kept referring to it as the gauntlet of death. I think she might have read that somewhere? It was a pretty accurate description of it though.

20220512_140611~2.jpg

Here is a shot looking back at it (above). People are just little specks on the trail. And this isn't even half of it!

20220512_092334~2.jpg

From here on it was huffing air and sweating profusely. Not to mention the burning leg muscles.

20220512_143616~2.jpg

It looks like we were getting close at this point. The white globe in the distance marks the summit.

20220512_141428~2.jpg

20220512_141711~2.jpg

We weren't close at all though. It was still deceptively far away, with a lot of uphill yet to go.

20220512_141839~2.jpg

The hike wasn't overly difficult but like I mentioned before it also wasn't easy.

20220512_141939~2.jpg

There were a lot of steps carved into rock and though the paths were very well maintained, the ground was quite rocky and uneven throughout. In my opinion hiking shoes or good runners would be a must.

20220512_142304~2.jpg

20220512_141444~2.jpg

That being said we did see some wild attire on the mountain. One young woman walking with her boyfriend (or maybe he was her photographer?) was wearing flip-flop sandals and literally the smallest thing bikini you could imagine (sorry no photos).

20220512_142137~2.jpg

20220512_142159~2.jpg

I'm pretty sure every person that the couple walked past were all thinking the same thing:

"The fuck is this girl doing???"

20220512_142857~2.jpg

20220512_142518~2.jpg

A bikini is one thing. I'm all for girl empowerment and all that - the guy wasn't wearing a shirt either.

20220512_142528~2.jpg

Maybe they were the type of people that don't burn in the intense sunshine, or maybe they were wearing copious amounts of sunscreen?

20220512_143855~2.jpg

But sandals?!? "WTF man! You're going to catch an edge on one of the uneven steps and do a header down the stone cliff face. Its about safety goddammit! No open footwear on the mountain!" (*Said the white middle age male with authority).

20220512_144532~2.jpg

I'm joking of course, not about their attire, but about my dramatic concern. Wear whatever the hell you want when you go hiking. Just don't complain when you roll an ankle, stub your toe and lose the nail, or trip and crack your skull.

20220512_144212~2.jpg

By the way can you tell that I enjoyed taking photos of this white ball in the distance? 20 steps - take picture. 20 more steps - take picture.

20220512_144526~2.jpg

When we finally made it to the peak of Arieiro we were tired and hungry. It was around 1:30- 2pm so we ordered snacks at the restaurant there before driving back to the hotel.

20220512_145336~2.jpg

I got cake and this drink called Poncha, which is native to the Island of Madeira. Its made with aguardente de cana alcohol (whatever that is), sugar, honey and lemon or orange juice.

20220512_145309~2.jpg

I'm sure that it's quite good in some places but there on the mountain they probably used really cheap liqor and it basically tasted like varsol with a splash of orange. I had a hard time getting it down.

20220512_145539~2.jpg

The pasteis de nata's weren't the greatest that we had in the country but you really can't expect top quality food from a mountain canteen. We were hungry enough that we didn't care anyway.

Scarf it down, head to the car and drive back to the hotel. That was our day.

20220512_145314~2.jpg

Well thats it for now. If you are interested in seeing more of our trip to Portugal than stay tuned, theres more to come. Until next time, thanks for stopping by.

Lol, flip flops on a mountain hike!

I love a walk that takes you above the clouds. So dramatic. Some of that looked like a proper arduous trail

Yeah it's a lot of work in a few areas - quite a few. Flip flops are not the proper footwear lol. My guess was that they were just there for an Instagram photo. Probably heading for one of the look out locations for a photo then turning around

🤷‍♂️

A beautiful place to visit and very spectacular. You are very lucky to be there.

The journey there must require a lot of energy, but the scenery there is well worth the exhaustion. It will definitely be very memorable after coming home from there.

Thank you @leaky20 for bringing all the beauty there to us all.

WOW! Magnificent views! So surreal!
I'll forever be enthralled by nature. The cloud formation is spectacular.

What was that silly woman thinking about taking such small kids on that hike? Good Lord!

Did the bikini look something like this?

Yeah young kids on a hike like that...I don't know what she was thinking really.

Haha it might have, I didn't get that close of a look lol.

This made me laugh out loud, @leaky20! 😂 I can totally relate to this. The trips that I share here usually take at least 2 parts and at times, if the trip spans days, a five-part blog will surely be born! And the pins on my own Pinmapple board are definitely so satisfying. I thought I'm the only one with this mindset but glad to read it elsewhere.

My last trip was a month ago (and haven't formally written anything about it except some photos I shared via Liketu). Your post made me want to book a trip right away but nah, not gonna happen until summer next year (March). It's already rainy and typhoon season here in Philippines, won't be great to schedule a trip now.

Yeah the Pins on a map are very satisfying for sure.

My last trip was a month ago (and haven't formally written anything about it except some photos I shared via Liketu).

Yeah I know what that's like. I have a major backlog at the moment. I'm currently working on our trips in May. It will be January before I start talking about our trip we took this summer lol

Major backlog indeed! 😅 If only my day job's less demanding but not gonna happen as the Christmas season is just around the corner. Looking forward to your summer trip posts tho. 😊

Yeah, well our expat adventure is ending in a few weeks so there will be a lot less travel in the immediate future. No more weekend getaways unfortunately. It was nice while it lasted.

Such an amazing photos @leaky20 😎🤩 the views…
What a hike, I can imagine the burn in the legs. Oefff
Hahaha the kids, yep scenario 2 makes so much more sense. Especially on a hike like that. Good you passed them.
I see sometimes people with flip flops on though hikes, and wonder… it isn’t good in many ways.
Crazy she was wearing that there. The flip flops I mean 😉🤓
Have a great day today!
Enjoyed seeing more of this island.

Yeah it was pretty wild attire for such a strenuous hike lol. I'm sure the kids made it up the hill in the end but what a struggle! I hope they took the shuttle back and didn't bother to hike back the way they came lol

They probably would have taken the shuttle.

How beautiful is the island of Ruvio in this flower paradise. I adore the pictures. I also enjoyed reading your adventure with the mother with a child. Most of all, it was very cool that you flew past them with the magic broom :)) I would love to see the island with such a beautiful view. It was very enjoyable that you reflected this to us with your beautiful narration. Thanks so much for sharing.

Yeah, cut the crap, and please get to the post quickly !!! 👻

Was that woman on the exactly same hike as you with her two kids? That's bonkers!

As to the girl in bikini, maybe she's a KOL. There was one in Taiwan, a very experienced climber who used to hike off the beat treks and posted images in a bikini at the destination. Sadly she fell and died a few years ago.

This 👇 is pretty crazy. Does it just lead to that peak and you have to come back again, or is there flatter terrain beyond the peak once you get to it?

Yeah, cut the crap, and please get to the post quickly !!! 👻

Hahaha 😂 Roger that!

Yeah the woman had to be on the same hike as us because there is only one path. You basically walk to one of the peaks and then turn around and walk back the same way. Or take a shuttle/taxi around the mountain back to your car (also possible). It's possible that she could have walked part way in and then decided it was too much and turned around but she had definitely completely a decent size portion of the hike. We ran into her about 1/2 or 3/4 of the way through or something.

I've never heard of a KOL but that could be what this woman was doing. Interesting 🤔

That photo wasn't actually the peak, it was a little ways into the hike. The hike had a lot of ups and downs throughout and there were flatter areas throughout as well. The summits on both peaks were very large spaces that could hold a lot of people. This was one narrow passage that acted as a bottleneck. It was probably the scariest part of the hike but it wasn't too bad really since the cable railings were in place.

I love the view!! Super big ones wearing flip flops, although, my lily white skin might be more frightened of the tiny bikini. Not only the burn factor, but, the tiny bikini. I like a little more coverage for respect of those that might find me after I plunge to the bottom with the improper footwear.

That looks like a amazing hike, but, more fun talking about it in a few years time.

Great snaps of the clouds.

Actually, it was quite awesome looking.
