Sun, Sand, and Centuries: Exploring Puerto Cabello's Dual Charm (ENG-ESP)

Is it possible to enjoy the beach and history? In Puerto Cabello, it is.

At least, that's what I did.

In the historic center, just a few meters from the sea, you'll find the Casa Herrera Museum, also known as the Puerto Cabello City Museum.

I didn't know the place existed. The first thing that caught my attention was the large number of people going in and out. So many that I no longer saw faces, but a blur of heads.

Well, not literally, but you get the idea.

The first person I saw at the door was a guide, who kindly said that a group would be entering in a few minutes to enjoy the tour.

¿Disfrutar de la playa y de la historia es posible? En Puerto Cabello, sí. Al menos eso fue lo que hice. En el centro histórico, a pocos metros del mar, se encuentra el Museo Casa Herrera, también conocido como Museo de la Ciudad de Puerto Cabello.

No sabía de la existencia del lugar. Lo primero que llamó mi atención fue la gran cantidad de personas que entraban y salían. Tanta, que ya no veía rostros, sino una multitud. Bueno, no fue literalmente, pero ya me entiendes.

Lo primero que vi en la puerta fue a una guía, que amablemente dijo que en breves minutos entraría un grupo para disfrutar del recorrido.

Meanwhile, I observed the architecture, which dates back to 1790, when what is now known as Venezuela was a colony of the then Spanish Empire.

The house belonged to one of the most important families in the region. After several attempts to remodel it, it was finally inaugurated as a museum last year.

After seeing the space, I entered with some friends into the first part of the tour.

There were people of all ages listening to the history of Puerto Cabello, which received the title of city in 1811 under the name San Juan Bautista de Puerto Cabello, but its name already appeared in colonial documentation in 1578.

Mientras tanto, observé la arquitectura, que data de 1790, cuando lo que hoy se conoce como Venezuela era una colonia del entonces Imperio español. La casa perteneció a una de las familias más importantes de la región. Después de varios intentos de remodelarla, finalmente fue inaugurada como museo el año pasado.

Después de ver el espacio, entré con unos amigos a la primera parte del recorrido. Había gente de todas las edades escuchando la historia de Puerto Cabello, que en 1811 recibió el título de ciudad bajo el nombre de San Juan Bautista de Puerto Cabello, pero en 1578 su nombre ya figuraba en la documentación colonial.

Its curious name, the guide explained, is due to two theories.

The first refers to an encomendero named Cabello, who was one of the first to establish commercial activities there, and over time his name was adopted.

The other, more popular one, is that the waters are so calm that even a strand of hair could moor large ships.

While listening to these very interesting historical facts, I dedicated myself to photographing pieces from the colonial and independence eras, such as military uniforms, sculptures, paintings, and recreations of cultural events.

One of my friends watched me taking photos, and as a joke, I made a sound that's part of an inside joke, and he laughed for a while. It was a funny moment, and luckily, we didn't get any attention. I confess that I later regretted it because that type of behavior is disrespectful to others, even though the guides didn't really seem to mind.

Su curioso nombre, explicaba la guía, se debe a dos teorías. La primera se refiere a un encomendero de apellido Cabello, quien fue uno de los primeros en establecer actividades comerciales allí, y con el paso del tiempo se adoptó su nombre.

La otra, más popular, es que las aguas son tan tranquilas que incluso una hebra de cabello podía amarrar a grandes barcos. Mientras escuchaba estos datos históricos tan interesantes, me dediqué a fotografiar piezas de la época colonial y de la independencia, como uniformes militares, esculturas, pinturas y recreaciones de manifestaciones culturales.

Uno de mis amigos me veía tomar las fotos y, a modo de broma, emití un sonido que es parte de un chiste interno, y él se rio un rato. Fue un momento cómico y, por suerte, no nos llamaron la atención. Confieso que después me arrepentí porque ese tipo de comportamientos son una falta de respeto para los demás, pese a que en realidad a las guías no pareció importarles.

We continued the tour through the first part until we went up to the second, where there is a panoramic view of Puerto Cabello. And yes, it's beautiful because the sea is the main attraction. There are cafes there selling products made in the region, especially chocolate. There are also more spaces linked to the history of Puerto Cabello.

We spent some time observing the city, but little by little the sun was setting, and it was time to leave because my friend doesn't like driving at night, plus we had already spent the whole day at the beach, and honestly, we were tired.

Visiting the historic center deserves more hours to enjoy it, because there are many options that I will gladly share in other posts later.

Seguimos el recorrido por la primera parte hasta subir a la segunda, donde hay una vista panorámica de Puerto Cabello. Y sí, es bellísima porque el mar es el protagonista. Allí hay cafés donde venden productos hechos en la región, especialmente chocolate. También se encuentran más espacios vinculados con la historia de Puerto Cabello.

Estuvimos un rato observando la ciudad, pero poco a poco el sol se ocultaba y era hora de irse, porque a mi amigo no le gusta manejar de noche, además de que ya teníamos todo el día en la playa y, la verdad, estábamos cansados.

Visitar el Centro histórico merece más horas para disfrutarlo, porque hay muchas opciones que luego, en otras publicaciones, con mucho gusto compartiré.
