THE TIMELESS GUARDIAN OF PIZZO

Today I have a few photos for you from my private trip to PIZZO. Pizzo has been appearing in my posts quite frequently lately. The reason is simple – my sister and my friend are waiting to see the photos from this trip, so they currently have a slightly higher priority in my Lightroom workflow.
When visiting Pizzo, it's impossible not to notice the local castle. It is probably the very first landmark that catches your eye almost as soon as you enter the town. You can already see it from a distance, as it stands directly above the Tyrrhenian Sea and almost in the very centre of Pizzo, although the town itself is not particularly large.

CASTELLO MURAT does not resemble the fairy-tale castles with tall towers and richly decorated facades. Its architecture is very austere and simple, yet at the same time it gives the impression of being incredibly solid. The small windows, the round defensive tower, the massive stone walls and the overall simplicity of the structure clearly show that functionality was once far more important than appearance.
The fortress was built at the end of the 15th century by Ferdinand I of Aragon and its main purpose was to defend the coast of Calabria from attacks coming from the sea. It was designed purely as a defensive structure.
The fact that the castle stands directly above the Tyrrhenian Sea perfectly explains why it was built in this particular location. From its walls, it was easy to keep watch over the coastline and monitor approaching vessels.

Besides its defensive role, the castle also served military and prison purposes for centuries. Its name comes from Joachim Murat, the King of Naples and the brother-in-law of Napoleon Bonaparte. After his unsuccessful attempt to regain power, he was captured in PIZZO and imprisoned in this very fortress. A few days later, he was executed by firing squad. It was this event that made the small town of Pizzo part of European history.

For almost five centuries, the castle has been the symbol of Pizzo. During that time, rulers and generations of residents have come and gone, yet its role has remained unchanged. This fortress was, is and will continue to be the guardian of PIZZO.
