THE SYMBOL OF TROPEA

One of the places on our map during our trip to southern Italy was a town called TROPEA. I think that everyone who has been to that region associates this town with its beautiful little church, which is undoubtedly the pride of the whole town and attracts thousands, if not millions, of tourists.

And that church is SANTUARIO DI SANTA MARIA DELL'ISOLA. It was the most beautiful thing I have seen in recent times.

The sanctuary became famous mainly because of its location, as it is situated on top of a rock, right above the sea. Simply something beautiful!

Jednym z punktów na naszej mapie podczas naszej podróży do południowych Włoch było miasteczko o nazwie TROPEA. Myślę, że każdy, kto był w tamtych regionach, kojarzy to miasteczko ze względu na przepiękny kościółek, który niewątpliwie jest dumą całego miasta i przyciąga tysiące, o ile nie miliony turystów.

A tym kościółkiem jest SANTUARIO DI SANTA MARIA DELL'ISOLA. To była najpiękniejsza rzecz, którą w ostatnim czasie udało mi się zobaczyć.

Sanktuarium to stało się sławne głównie ze względu na swoją lokalizację, gdyż znajduje się na szczycie skały, tuż nad brzegiem morza. Po prostu coś pięknego!

An interesting fact is that the cliff on which the sanctuary stands was once a separate island and only over time became connected to the mainland, forming the present-day peninsula. The church itself was built in this location already in the Middle Ages, while its current appearance is the result of many reconstructions. The sanctuary was damaged by earthquakes over the years.

Ciekawostką jest, iż klif, na którym znajduje się sanktuarium, był kiedyś oddzielną wyspą i dopiero z biegiem czasu połączył się z lądem, tworząc obecny półwysep. Sama świątynia powstała w tym miejscu już w średniowieczu, natomiast jej obecny wygląd to efekt wielu odbudów. Sanktuarium bowiem ucierpiało w wyniku trzęsień ziemi.

The sanctuary is open to visitors. The entrance fee is only a few euros, and the climb to the top is relaxing even for people with weaker physical condition, like me. I believe it is definitely worth going all the way to the top. From there, you can admire beautiful views of the surrounding buildings of TROPEA… but that’s a story for another post.

Sanktuarium jest dostępne dla zwiedzających. Wstęp kosztuje jedynie kilka euro, a wspinaczka na górę jest relaksująca nawet dla osób o słabszej kondycji, takich jak ja. Uważam, że zdecydowanie warto udać się na sam szczyt. Stamtąd możemy podziwiać cudne widoki na okoliczne budynki TROPEI… ale to już materiał na osobny post.

And this is how the sanctuary looks up close. The building has a very distinctive shape, characterized mainly by its simplicity. The bright, almost white walls beautifully contrast with the raw, rocky base on which it was built.
I think the building is not overly decorated, but it is exactly in this simplicity and harmony that its true charm lies.

A tak prezentuje się sanktuarium z bliska. Budynek ma bardzo charakterystyczną bryłę, wyróżniającą się przede wszystkim swoją prostotą. Jasne, niemal białe ściany pięknie kontrastują z surową, skalistą podstawą, na której zostało wzniesione.
Uważam, że budynek nie jest jakoś przesadnie zdobiony, ale właśnie w tej prostocie i harmonii tkwi cały jego urok.

We also stepped inside for a moment. As in every church, there is silence and calm. The altar is not overly decorated, and the interior is rather simple, yet very charming.

Weszłyśmy również na chwilę do środka. Jak w każdym kościele, panuje tam cisza i spokój. Ołtarz nie jest przesadnie zdobiony, a wnętrze jest raczej skromne, ale jednocześnie bardzo urokliwe.

Behind the sanctuary, there is a small garden. I have to admit that its presence in such a place really surprised me. I thought that at the very top there would be only the church, but it turned out that you can also relax and unwind there among olive trees and Mediterranean vegetation.
It’s a place where you can take a moment to escape from the tourist crowds that fill the area down below.

Z tyłu sanktuarium znajduje się niewielki ogród. Muszę przyznać, że zaskoczyła mnie jego obecność w takim miejscu. Myślałam, że na samej górze znajduje się jedynie świątynia, a tymczasem okazało się, że można tam również odpocząć i zrelaksować się wśród drzew oliwnych i śródziemnomorskiej roślinności.
To miejsce daje chwilę wytchnienia od turystycznego zgiełku, który panuje na samym dole.

If you ever find yourself in southern Italy, be sure to add TROPEA to your travel list. This little church looks truly stunning in real life and beautifully contrasts with the turquoise color of the water. It is definitely a place you need to see with your own eyes!

Będąc w południowych Włoszech, koniecznie wpiszcie sobie miasteczko TROPEA na swoją listę do zwiedzania. Ten kościółek na żywo robi naprawdę niesamowite wrażenie i pięknie kontrastuje z turkusowym kolorem wody. To miejsce zdecydowanie trzeba zobaczyć na własne oczy!
