Let's Discover the Tranquil Charm of Gouves, Crete in Winter Time

Let's take a walk and discover a quiet place that still echoes the voices and noises of last summer!

Yesterday afternoon, I decided it. I would take a break from everything that was a burden and I would go for a few minutes walk. A few minutes that quickly became an one-hour walk and if darkness would not move closer, I would definitely stay longer.

Gouves area of Crete is a popular tourist destination during the summer months, with its long stretches of golden sand and crystal-clear waters attracting visitors from around the world.

However, during the winter season, the area takes on a different character entirely.

Gouves is a small coastal town located just 18 km east of Heraklion, and between Gournes - Anissaras. It is known for its laid-back atmosphere and welcoming locals just as the whole of Crete.

During the winter, this friendly charm is still evident, but the pace of life is slower, and the town is much quieter.

The promenade that was once bustling with tourists is now a peaceful walkway, perfect for a leisurely stroll or a morning jog. The beach that was once filled with sunbathers and swimmers is now almost entirely empty, except for a few locals and visitors who enjoy the chilly winter sea.

I was both happy that I could make photos without anyone in my frames, but also sad because I could feel the loneliness and hunger of the cats (I had not brought enough food with me)

It's a quieter, more reflective time in Gouves, and visitors who venture to the area during the winter months will find a unique opportunity to experience a more local, authentic side of Crete. The crisp winter air, the rugged coastline, and the quiet solitude all come together to create a memorable and peaceful experience.
