Exploring Orašac, a place that shaped Serbian history

Before we arrived at Bukulja mountain a few weeks ago, our first stop was Orašac, a small historical place in Serbia. This place tells a story so powerful that you can feel the past there. Best known as the birthplace of the First Serbian Uprising, it offers visitors a chance to step into one of the most significant chapters of Serbian history.

When we arrived at the spacious meadow where this historical complex is located, my children immediately start running and then kept their attention on the monument to Karađorđe Petrović, the leader of the First Serbian Uprising.

I conveyed my love for museums to them, so they couldn't wait to go inside the museum located in this place and learn more about this historical figure.

The exhibition guides visitors through the events leading up to 1804, introducing the lives of ordinary people, the struggle for freedom, and the leadership of Karađorđe.

Original artifacts, historical documents, weapons, and multimedia displays make the story engaging and easy to follow, even for those unfamiliar with Serbian history.

My son was especially interested in seeing how our country used to look in the process of becoming what it is now. He was surprised that at that time some cities were not part of the then Serbian state but belonged to the surrounding states.

It was also very interesting for us to see what the clothes were like at that time, completely different from today.

Just a short walk away stands the beautiful Church of the Ascension of the Lord, built in the late 19th century to commemorate the uprising. Its peaceful atmosphere invites visitors to pause and reflect on the sacrifices made by those who fought for freedom.

We walked around a bit more, then we headed to Marićevića jaruga, the place where the first Serbian uprising was agreed upon. And I will take you there in my next blog.

Thank you for reading.
