My Journey to Unheard Places : (Kiss Island) Jomalig Island Philippines.
Hey there, explorers! You've probably heard about the Philippines' beautiful islands such as Boracay, Palawan, and many more, but have you ever heard about (kiss)Jomalig Island? Probably not, so let me take you there!
Jomalig Island is one of the easternmost inhabited islands of Luzon. It belongs to Quezon Province and is part of the Polillo Island group, nestled in the Philippine Sea.
Why It’s Called Jomalig?
Jomalig (ho-ma-lig) comes from the Filipino word “humalik,” which means “to kiss.” Long ago, a princess lived on the island. Many men wanted to marry her, but she gave a kiss only to the bravest one. People say that’s how the island got its name.
This island has a lot to offer and can definitely compete with the more popular islands we have when it comes to beauty. But still, not many people dare to give it a shot. Why? Because of the travel. First, you have to take a 6-hour van ride, followed by a 7-hour journey on an old, rugged ship; making it a 14-hour trip, with or without traffic.
Aside from the long travel time, the ocean waves weren’t very forgiving either. Since it’s an open sea, the waves were strong enough to make it feel like it was raining inside the ship. (And don’t even think about going to the toilet, unless you’re ready to become a waterbender! HAHAHA)
Right after that long journey, we were greeted by the crystal-clear waters this island has to offer. I know the camera doesn’t do it justice, but bear with me.
We had to ride a military truck to get to the other side of the island, where our hut was located. It was another 30-minute ride (dusty and tiring) but hey, we don’t get to ride a military truck every day, so it was definitely a ride to remember!
We only had three days to explore everything on the island, so we didn’t waste any time. After our meal, we went straight to the infamous Turtle Rock and the “Tree of Walang Forever” (Forever Alone Tree).
We visited the island’s seven unique beaches, each with its own beauty to offer—white sand, golden sand, rock formations—you name it, they have it. Although, there were a few we couldn’t visit because we were just too tired.
The rock formations here are fantastic too! They’re not too difficult to climb, and the view from the top is definitely worth it.
One of my favorite activities was definitely the 4-hour dirt bike ride! I wish I could upload the video here, it was absolutely breathtaking.
And of course, what’s a trip to the beach without a good dip and a sunset view, right?
In conclusion, Jomalig is a virgin island that even locals haven't visited yet. The peacefulness of this place definitely helped me and my friends reconnect with Mother Nature. Yes, there is signal on the island, but only in some parts, and I think it's better that way. The prices of food and necessities are just right, considering how far everything has to travel to get there. And yes, there is a community here; they are friendly and helpful in every way possible.
Expenses including Hut, food, souvenirs & transpo : 100USD
Is it worth visiting? Yes, definitely.
Would I come back? Maybe, when the mode of transportation gets better.
