Time Well Spent: My Ibn Battuta Wanderings

My husband dropped me off at Ibn Battuta Mall. He had an important call at the office. He told me it would take an one hour. I smiled telling him that I’d just wait at the food court. Something inside me whispered, why just sit when I could explore? I took a deep breath, smiled and chose to roam around.
Ibn Battuta Mall isn’t just a mall, it’s an expedition through history. It was built in 2005 and named after Ibn Battuta. The legendary Maghrebi Muslim traveler and scholar. This is the largest themed mall in Dubai. It’s divided into six themed courts: Persia, Tunisia, China, Andalusia, Egypt and India. Each represents the lands Ibn Battuta once explored. As someone who loves culture and design, I felt like I was about to plunge into a mini world tour without leaving Dubai.

My first stop was the Persia Court and it took my breath away. The vast dome above me flashed with intricate arabesque pattern and the immense chandelier radiated warmth from the ceiling. The blue mosaic tiles flared under the light. The arched pathway made me feel like I was walking through a Persian palace. I stopped for a moment appreciating the art and charm of the place. The geometric and floral tile style colored in shades of blue, cream and yellow was truly alluring. I couldn’t help but take several photos, it was too wonderful not to share.

I made my way to the Tunisia Court. It gave off a unique atmosphere. It has a bright blue sky with soft clouds ceiling giving the impression of being outdoors. The framework was stirred by the towns of Tunisia. I felt a sense of placidity and glee as I looked around. This area was lively with life, restaurants, shops selling watches and jewelry and garments.

Next came the China Court and it instantly felt majestic. Red and gold reigned in the design. The traditional Chinese architectural plot enhanced the walls and ceiling. My favorite feature was the magnificent dragon motif and the replica of a traditional Chinese junk ship displayed at the center. It was stunning! The whole court exuded a sense of power and grace.

I reached the Andalusia Court where the beauty of architecture took over. The Fountain of Lions stood boldly. Bordered by star shaped ceilings. I loved the smooth gleam of hanging lamps and the wooden carvings on the walls. There was something so serene here like time had slowed down just for a moment.

Then came the Egypt Court which was full of ancient charm. Though I brisked a bit because I needed to find the restroom, I still used to noticed the majestic Egyptian style pillars and artwork. At the center was an Armillary Sphere. A copy of a celestial navigation tool used by Ibn Battuta himself. A wonderful reminder of his adventurous spirit.

I reached the India Court. I was totally awed. The spot was made to show the Mughal period of India, it echoed the beauty of the Taj Mahal. The most eye catching feature was the gigantic Elephant Clock. A copy of Al-Jazari’s incredible invention. Watching it move filled me with a sense of wonder. The whole area radiated beauty, culture and artistry. It was the ideal ending to my little venture.
I checked the time, an hour had already passed. My feet were a bit tired but my heart was loaded. My phone rang it was my husband telling me he was on his way back. I smiled realizing how a simple wait turned into a memorable solo journey. I made my way back to the Persia Court, feeling grateful for the quiet joy of exploration.
