A Walk Above the Kura River: Tbilisi’s Bridge of Peace, Georgia

The Bridge of Peace (Georgian: მშვიდობის ხიდი, mshvidobis khidi) is a bow-shaped pedestrian bridge, a steel and glass construction illuminated with numerous LEDs, over the Kura River, linking the Rike Park with Old town in central Tbilisi. Since its opening in 2010 the structure has become an important pedestrian crossing in the city, as well as a significant tourist attraction and one of the most well-recognized landmarks of the capital.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bridge_of_Peace

This was our first day to wander around the city with our tour guide. My husband and I stepped outside the hotel to look around the neighborhood after we had breakfast. Everything was so diverse from the place where we are currently living. The structures had their own character. The streets and peaceful environs made me stop and simply take everything in. The air was cool but it was energizing. I took my phone to capture a few photos and some selfies together.

Our tour guide arrived and welcomed us kindly. He told us that we would be roaming the historic Old Tbilisi area. Our first stop was the Bridge of Peace. It made me feel thrilled because this bridge was one of the great spots in the city. When we arrived in the area I was surprised by the view. It looked very modish compared to the historic surroundings of Old Tbilisi. The bridge was massive and unbend gracefully over the flowing Kura River. I walked onto the bridge I felt a sudden rush of happiness.

We stepped on the bridge I noticed its stylish curved steel and glass roof. Our tour guide said that the roof contains LED installations. The glass boards along the handrails also have embedded lights. The bridge becomes even more gorgeous at night. The lights create an impressive display over the river. Even though we visited in the morning the bridge still looked awesome.

From the bridge the view of the city was simply wonderful. My husband and I paused for a while silently savoring the moment. We looked around at the alluring contrast between old and new buildings surrounding us. We feel glad to witness such a wonderful spot. Our guide showed some prime sights visible from the bridge which were the Metekhi Church, the Vakhtang Gorgasali, Mother of Georgia, the Narikala Fortress, the Baratashvili Bridge and the Ceremonial Palace of Georgia. I had not taken snaps of some of the places he mentioned. I was so occupied listening to his explanations and enjoying the view. Even though I missed capturing a few pictures I felt grateful for the knowledge he shared and for the chance to experience that beautiful moment with my husband.

Standing there made us feel thankful. It was a pleasant time where we could truly admire the beauty of the city. Spending almost an hour on the bridge and taking photos as we continued our tour. Thrilled to see more of what Tbilisi has to offer.
