Exploring the Whitelake Bog - Estonia

At the start of May, I decided to go for a drive and explore a bog where I had been only once before. This is a White Lake bog and doesn't look like one we most often have here in Estonia it just looks a bit different. This bog is located in the northwestern part of the country and takes me about an hour from the capital of Tallinn to reach there.

I had been there before, but this time I used another path to reach the bog itself. The trail started in the field. Fortunately, it wasn't overgrown or anything.

Until I reached the forest. This forest looked a bit like it's a good place for bears to hang out. There are bears in the area, and you will see marks of them soon enough in this post.

It didn't take me too long from there to reach the White Lake bog. You quickly see that this wetland differs from the others due to the vegetation. I'm not entirely sure what this is, but it looks like reeds.

Looking at the small ponds of the wetland, it doesn't leave much room for guessing where the name White Lake bog comes from. A lot of little, shallow water areas have white bottoms. I'm not sure if this is sand, clay, or what, but it looks like a surface where it's easy to sink if stepped on.

After a short while of walking on the wooden path, the bigger lake comes into view. The scenery all around is really beautiful and unique in my opinion.

In the middle of the bog, there is an island of trees, and the trail goes through there.

On this island is a tree, a bear tree. This is because a bear or bears in this area have stood up and scratched this tree. They are definitely larger in height than I am, looking at this. This is a brown bear doing in here.

After walking through the tree island, you can start to see the nearby bog lakes better. Also, the tower in the forest line overlooks the area.

To reach the tower, I needed to walk a forest trail for a short while again.

These are some of the views from the tower platform. Most of it is blocked by trees though, and I have to peek through the trees to see the view.

This is where the trail ended. I tried to see if I could go any further because there seemed to be a trail, but it turned out to be too wet, so I didn't go any further.

Overall, I really liked this bog and if you ever happen to visit Estonia and want to go out into the wild, then I would definitely recommend visiting this wetland! It's in one of my top 5 bogs here in the country for sure.
