Exploring Singapore's "Oasis of Hope", the Bishan-Ang Moh Kio Park
Sometimes I feel like I’m so caught up with life that I forget to live fully. That’s why I utilize every free time that I have to go out and see the places that I’ve been looking forward to visiting or revisiting for that matter. To eat the food that gives me satisfaction for my cravings. And to spend time wandering to see the world around me.
I may not be spending much when it comes to my daily living but I’m not stingy to myself when it comes to food. I often give in to food even though it’s not so good to be eating out every day (as you can tell through my posts). I just really like nice food and I enjoy having the freedom to choose whatever interests me.
Last Monday, I made a post about my discovery of the Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery, and even though I was already tired after that, I still managed to push myself to walk further to go to the Bishan-Ang Moh Kio park. I think that it’s one of the most beautiful and innovative parks in Singapore.
My trek into the park started from the Monastery to the Sin Ming Drive and then through an unofficial entrance to the park that led me to this spot.
Since I'm quite familiar with this park, I was able to orient myself into locating the direction to Recycle Hill, more about it in the later part of the post.
I just felt relieved that I was able to find my way to the park and feel the shade from the tall trees.
The park is divided into two major sections, the East side and the West side. The Kallang River connects the two sections as it passes through to both of them.
From the paved footpath, I saw a Heron that was on the watch for incoming fish to its location. I'm amazed that wild migratory birds like this have found solace here at the park in the center of the city.
From here, I continued my trek and found a nice wooden deck anyone can use for meditation or doing some exercise routine.
I also found a dried-up ditch that comes from the nearby apartment buildings and then flow towards the river.
There's an ongoing renovation at some of the parts of the park and so I have to take a detour to go around the construction site.
I can see that they are doing a good job in trying not to disturb nature in the affected part of the renovation. So, after the quick detour, I have reconnected to the path going to the East side of the park.
After a few minutes of walk, I saw a shed that is shaped like a leaf where park goers may take a rest or shelter when they are caught in the rain.
I think that it's a creative design.
After this part, I reached halfway to the park.
As soon as I saw the footbridge, I already felt that I was getting closer to the Recycle Hill. But before that, I had to check what was happening on the river because I noticed the school fish in the middle of it.
I also noticed that there is a tortoise that's resting on top of a rock.
I wish that I have a telephoto lens to capture the tortoise in sharper or a much clearer photo.
Just a few meters away, I overheard a group of people nearby and as soon as I got closer, I saw that there were a lot of kids in that area playing soccer while their parents were having a picnic near the court.
I have continued my trek as I get closer to the hill.
Finally, I've reached the spot where the Recycle Hill is.
The concrete canal at Bishan-Ang Moh Kio Park was once a vital part of the neighborhood's drainage system and allowed water to flow through from the Kallang River. When works began to transform the canal into meandering river, the concrete was cut into slabs and stacked to form the Recycled Hill.
The metal structure is the centerpiece not only of the Recycle Hill but also of the entire park itself.
After walking around the sculpture and looking at every angle of it or even through it, I decided to walk back to the path that I walked on. And as I went down the hill, I noticed a family that was gathering at the Kallang River. At some point, I saw the kid feeding something in the water.
I walk to their area to see what's happening down there. I'm so amazed to see that there is a school of fishes that doesn't mind being close to people.
The water is clear enough for me to see them.
At this point, I'm exhausted because it's the longest "unplanned" trek that I had in a long while.
I enjoyed the experience and the pleasure of being able to explore my surroundings through my wayfinding skills or I should say "luck". I went to the Bright Hill area without any expectations to find but it turned out to be one of my best treks ever.
The Bishan-AMK Park is a family-friendly park that can cater to a variety of activities that everyone can enjoy. Even a simple rest or a picnic with family and or friends can be a fun experience because of the activities that they can do in this park.
I will be revisiting the park soon and inviting some friends for a nice chat and a picnic.

Beautiful sculpture, it reminded me of some parks in the city of São Paulo, Brazil
Indeed. I'm not knowledgeable about Brazil but what I know is that there are many good-creative artists there.
Have a good day man!
