Posada Bosque Sagrado - Goblins, Indians, Spirits and Aliens in the same place?

Una por las razones que mejor conocen a Mérida, es por sus montañas, páramos, valles y picos. En este estado pueden encontrar una de las cumbres más altas del mundo, el Pico Bolívar, también el teleférico más alto del mundo.

One of the reasons you know Merida best, is for its mountains, moors, valleys and peaks. In this state you can find one of the highest peaks in the world, Pico Bolivar, also the highest cable car in the world.

Sin duda tiene unos atractivos que principalmente te conectan con la naturaleza. Sin embargo, hay una reputación por la que también es bien conocida esta región y es por el misticismo, la magia y leyendas que se albergan en sus montañas.

Algo muy representativo de esto, lo pueden encontrar en esta experiencia que viví junto a mi familia, visitando un lugar llamado La Posada Bosque Sagrado, ubicado en el estado Mérida en una de las vías aledañas a la vía del Valle conocida como Los Pinos, antes de llegar a la Guardia.

Something very representative of this can be found in this experience that I lived with my family, visiting a place called La Posada Bosque Sagrado, located in the state of Merida in one of the roads near the road to the Valley known as Los Pinos, before reaching The Guard.

Este lugar, es una casa común y corriente, pero que pose unos espacios muy agradables. La casa da hacia un bosque y de ahí parte del nombre del lugar. La otra mitad viene de algunas esculturas albergadas en el bosque. ¿Cómo llegaron ahí? es todo un misterio…

This place is an ordinary house, but it has very nice spaces. The house faces a forest and that's where part of the name of the place comes from. The other half comes from some sculptures housed in the forest, but how they got there is a mystery...

Mentira jajaj era una pequeña broma. Nos comentaba nuestro guía, también dueño del lugar. Que él solía pasar gran parte de su tiempo en el bosque, reflexionando y meditando. Y, con toda razón pues es un lugar muy apacible donde el único sonido que importa es el de la naturaleza. Para mí, es un lugar tranquilo para pensar o hasta dormir debajo de un árbol y para calmar tus pensamientos viendo el fluir del río.

No, it was a little joke. Our guide, who is also the owner of the place, told us. He used to spend most of his time in the forest, reflecting and meditating. And rightly so, because it is a very peaceful place where the only sound that matters is the sound of nature. For me, it is a quiet place to think or even sleep under a tree and to calm your thoughts by watching the flow of the river.

Nuestro guía de nombre William, comenzó justo como cualquier otro merideño te diría sobre como debes acceder a una montaña, a un valle o a un bosque. Siempre debes pedir permiso a los espíritus o entidades que ahí viven antes de entrar. Mientras decía esto, nos señalaba la imagen de un pequeño duende tallado y pintado en un árbol. Por supuesto, que pedimos permiso antes de aventurarnos dentro del bosque y esta imagen fue donde se depositaron nuestros respetos.

Lo que nos encontraríamos sería maravilloso, un bosque lleno de esculturas talladas en los árboles. Algunos duendes, deidades o hasta personajes que nuestro escultor se sentía orgulloso de tallar.

Our guide, named William, began just as any other Merideño would tell you about how to access a mountain, a valley or a forest. You must always ask permission from the spirits or entities that live there before entering. As he said this, he pointed to the image of a small elf carved and painted on a tree. Of course, we asked permission before venturing into the forest and this image was where our respects were paid.

What we would find would be wonderful, a forest full of sculptures carved into the trees. Some elves, deities or even characters that our sculptor was proud to carve.

La forma de estas figuras, dependían mucho de la energía que William sentía de cada árbol, de como era el panorama entorno a él y de eso también dependía mucho la escultura que pudiera tallar.

Algunas de las representaciones que notarán representan indios Caribes. Estos indios son parte muy importante de su historia. Nos comentaba que uno de sus abuelos venía de norte américa, era un marino. Llegando a costas venezolanas, su barco encalló y quedó atrapado en aguas pocas profundas. Decidió bajar y esperar en una de las costas de Cumaná y parece que ahí encontró a su pareja otro de sus abuelos un indio Caribe que dio vida a esta nueva familia venezolana. Una familia que hoy nos comparte su historia y su hermoso arte.

Some of the representations you will notice depict Carib Indians. These Indians are a very important part of his history. He told us that one of his grandfathers came from North America, he was a sailor. Arriving at the Venezuelan coast, his ship ran aground and was trapped in shallow waters. He decided to get off and wait in one of the coasts of Cumaná and it seems that there he found his partner, another of his grandfathers, a Caribbean Indian who gave life to this new Venezuelan family. A family that today shares its history and its beautiful art with us.

Pues Wiliam representó a varios indios Caribe que reconoce de la historia y aunque se esforzó diciéndonos el nombre de algunos, mi mala memoria con los nombres no me permite recordarlos.

Pero, si nos contó la historia de uno de ellos que al ser indio y un gran guerrero, fue capturado y llevado a una ciudad del centro. En una plaza lo liberaron y para su sorpresa había un perro entrenado para matar. Este indio tuvo que pelear por su vida. Pero, logró hacerse de la victoria, tuvo que matar al perro con sus manos. Pero, para su desgracia el perro que conocía los puntos vulnerables de los humanos, había hecho grandes tajos al nivel de la garganta y el cuello de este indio. Ya viéndolo como un moribundo, sus captores lo dejaron libre. El Caribe con todo su ser logró llegar a su tierra para dar un último adiós a su tribu.

But, he did tell us the story of one of them who, being an Indian and a great warrior, was captured and taken to a downtown city. In a square he was released and to his surprise there was a dog trained to kill. This Indian had to fight for his life. But, he managed to win the victory, he had to kill the dog with his hands. But, to his misfortune the dog who knew the vulnerable points of humans, had made large gashes at the level of the Indian's throat and neck. Already seeing him as a dying man, his captors set him free. The Caribbean with all his being managed to reach his land to say a last goodbye to his tribe.

Con esta historia entiendo muy bien el orgullo que siente William por sus orígenes. Supongo, tanto tiempo de reflexión que ha tenido, le ha hecho pensar mucho en su pasado.

Hay un espacio al que también le dedicó su arte a otras culturas que acompañan a los Caribes. Por ejemplo, una hermosa representación de la cultura hindú, también un Rey de África y a un Apache. Famosas esculturas que nos conectan con grandes culturas.

With this story I understand very well William's pride in his origins. I guess, so much time of reflection he has had, has made him think a lot about his past.

There is a space in which he also dedicated his art to other cultures that accompany the Caribs. For example, a beautiful representation of the Hindu culture, also a King of Africa and an Apache. Famous sculptures that connect us with great cultures.

Algo de lo que nos hablaba nuestro guía era de su proceso de confección. Y nos aclaró que era muy importante realizar la escultura cuando la Luna esté en cuarto menguante. Es bien sabido que las fases de la Luna tienen una influencia en la vegetación y en muchos otros fenómenos. Él nos decía que, durante esta fase lunar, el árbol está más dispuesto a ser tallado y no sufre. Esto lo pueden saber cuando le hacía un corte y la savia era abundante o no. La savia es una sustancia que sirve para conducir los nutrientes de alguna planta (en este caso del árbol). Siempre que realizaba este trabajo en cuarto menguante, la savia no era abundante, significa que los nutrientes del árbol no se desperdiciarían y por lo tanto no sufriría tanto.

One of the things our guide told us about was the process of making the sculpture. And he made it clear that it was very important to make the sculpture when the Moon is in the waning quarter. It is well known that the phases of the moon have an influence on vegetation and many other phenomena. He told us that, during this lunar phase, the tree is more willing to be carved and does not suffer. You can know this when he made a cut and the sap was abundant or not. Sap is a substance that serves to carry the nutrients of a plant (in this case the tree). Whenever he did this work in the waning quarter, the sap was not abundant, meaning that the nutrients of the tree would not be wasted and therefore would not suffer so much.

Para él, este proceso era muy importante y por supuesto, entraba en juego en ese momento de creación. Nos comentó, que hubo un día que hizo el tallado en una fase lunar distinta y el resultado se puede ver en la imagen anterior.

El árbol segregó tanta savia que pareciera que le creó una barba muy larga al personaje. Aunque, se ve distinto. El árbol sufrió mucho en este proceso.

Claro, la savia también juega un papel para darle otro tipo de dimensiones a las esculturas. Sin embargo, aunque es inevitable, el árbol no sufre tanto, cuando se hace en la fase lunar correcta. Por ejemplo, el velo que se ve en esta escultura de María Magdalena, la barba de otros personajes y muchas otras.

For him, this process was very important and of course, it came into play at that moment of creation. He told us that there was a day when he did the carving in a different moon phase and the result can be seen in the image above.

The tree secreted so much sap that it seemed to create a very long beard on the character. Although, it looks different. The tree suffered a lot in this process.

Of course, the sap also plays a role in giving other dimensions to the sculptures. However, although it is unavoidable, the tree does not suffer as much, when done in the right moon phase. For example, the veil seen in this sculpture of Mary Magdalene, the beard of other characters and many others.

Entre estas últimas esculturas están mis favoritas y por supuesto la inspiración para esta y cualquier otra escultura viene del lugar. La calma y la naturaleza te hace sentir tan relajado y a gusto que haces un convenio con la naturaleza y quieres tratar de plasmarla de alguna manera.

Among these last sculptures are my favorites and of course the inspiration for this and any other sculpture comes from the place. The calm and nature makes you feel so relaxed and at ease that you make a covenant with nature and want to try to capture it in some way.

Por supuesto, estas obras eran algo muy personal de William. Sin embargo, desde hace unos 3 años decidieron abrir este Bosque Sagrado, su casa a los visitantes. Algo muy bueno, que me hace pensar que hay muchas personas haciendo cosas increíbles en sus casas esperando a ser descubiertas por el mundo.

Me siento muy agradecido de poder visitar este lugar y poder encontrar tantas bellas formas. William es todo un maestro y nos dijo que, en un futuro, el árbol seguramente cubrirá su arte. Él empezó estos proyectos hace 5 años y algunas figuras parecen esconderse cada vez más dentro del árbol. Por eso, me siento muy agradecido, porque tal vez en un futuro, estas obras ya no estén o no se vean iguales. Claro, supongo William las tratará de mantener a la vista todo lo que él pueda. Pero, la naturaleza siempre nos ganará.

Hay algunas esculturas que no les compartí, pero es con la intención de animarlos a visitar el lugar. Espero, lo hagan antes de que la naturaleza cubra los rastros de lo que alguna vez ahí se talló.

Of course, these works were something very personal to William. However, since about 3 years ago they decided to open this Sacred Forest, their home to visitors. Something very good, which makes me think that there are many people doing amazing things in their homes waiting to be discovered by the world.

I feel very grateful to be able to visit this place and be able to find so many beautiful ways. William is quite a master and he told us that, in the future, the tree will surely cover his art. He started these projects 5 years ago and some figures seem to hide more and more inside the tree. For that, I feel very grateful, because maybe in the future, these works will no longer be or will not look the same. Of course, I suppose William will try to keep them in view as much as he can. But, nature will always win out.

There are some sculptures that I did not share with you, but it is with the intention of encouraging you to visit the place. I hope you do so before nature covers the traces of what was once carved there.
