From La Guajira to Maracaibo

I live in a town in northern Venezuela, very close to the Colombian-Venezuelan border region known as La Guajira.

An hour and a few minutes south is the capital, Maracaibo. Yes, you can get there by land, but if you're coming from other states in the country or other settlements on the islands in the lake, you can also get there by crossing the Rafael Urdaneta Bridge, which connects it to the rest of Venezuela, or by boat.

It is a pioneering city in many ways in Venezuela; it was the first city to have electricity, telephones, a rail transport system, an international port, and where cinema was first made.

Today, it is the second most important city in Venezuela, after Caracas, and is the center of the country's oil economy.

Historic Buildings

It is impressive to see the number of historic buildings near the lake, in its historic center, which I will discuss in more detail later.

There is a sidewalk along the lake, which is our main park, from where you can watch boats entering and leaving the port and where people exercise, walk, and enjoy recreational activities.

That is why I wanted to show our city from the lake, as one arrives at the port, and, at other points, how this lake can be seen from within the city.

Also, some avenues and buildings that we often don't show, such as the so-called Atlantes building in Baralt Square, which are statues made of Italian marble brought by boat by the owners of that commercial premises and which support the facade of the building on their shoulders.

This building showed the high status of the family that owned the pharmacy that used to be there.

In that building, there was a laboratory that, over time, became a hotel and then a store selling clothes and appliances. It has four wonderful floors that still impress passersby.

Similarly, in the heart of the historic center, there are also the great Catholic monuments on Paseo Ciencias, with the image of the Virgin Mary, patron saint of the city, and many other monuments and works of art.

But what will always impress us is its relationship with Lake Maracaibo, open to the Caribbean Sea; a lake that offers beautiful, sunny skies full of vitality.

A lake where the great Catatumbo lightning bolt is also located, as well as the port, from where transportation departs to different parts of the surrounding area.

La Vereda del Lago is a space that unifies the sky, the lake, and the city, surrounded by nature that brings families and friends together. Here, port activity transforms into a picturesque setting that defines the country's wealth, while people relax and celebrate life.

De la Guajira a Maracaibo

Vivo en un pueblo al norte de Venezuela, muy cerca de la guajira Colombo-venezolana.

A una hora y minutos, hacia el sur, se encuentra la capital, Maracaibo; y sí, se puede llegar por vía terrestre, pero también, cuando venimos de otros estados del país o de otros asentamientos que están en las islas del lago, se puede llegar cruzando el Puente Rafael Urdaneta que la conecta con el resto de Venezuela o a través de barcos.

Es una ciudad pionera en muchos aspectos en Venezuela; fue la primera ciudad que tuvo electricidad, teléfono, un sistema de transporte ferroviario, un puerto internacional y donde se hizo cine por primera vez.

Hoy es la segunda ciudad más importante de Venezuela, después de Caracas, y es el centro de la economía petrolera del país.

Edificios Históricos

Es impresionante observar la cantidad de edificios históricos que están cerca del lago, en su centro histórico, que luego publicaré con más extensión.

Tiene una vereda a orillas del lago, que es nuestro parque principal, desde donde se observan embarcaciones, entrar y salir al puerto y donde se realizan ejercicios, caminatas y actividades de esparcimiento.

Por eso que quise mostrar nuestra ciudad desde el lago, en el momento en que uno va llegando a su puerto, y, en otros puntos, cómo se observa este lago ya en la ciudad.

También, algunas avenidas y edificaciones que muchas veces no damos a conocer, como el llamado edificio de los Atlantes que está en la plaza Baralt, que son estatuas hechas de mármol italiano traído en barco por los dueños de ese local comercial y que sostienen la fachada del edificio sobre sus hombros.

Una edificación que mostraba el alto estatus que tenía la familia dueña de la farmacia que allí existió.

En dicho edificio había un laboratorio que, posteriormente con el paso del tiempo, se convirtió en un hotel y luego en un almacén de venta de ropa y de electrodomésticos; son cuatro pisos maravillosos que aún siguen impresionando a los transeúntes.

Igualmente, en pleno centro histórico también se encuentran los grandes monumentos católicos que están en el Paseo Ciencias, con la imagen de la Virgen María, patrona de la ciudad, y muchos otros monumentos y obras de arte.

Pero lo que siempre nos impresionará es su relación con el lago de Maracaibo, abierto al mar Caribe; un lago que ofrece cielos hermosos, soleados y llenos de vitalidad.

Lago donde también está sentado el gran rayo del Catatumbo y el puerto, desde donde se toman los transportes que van a diferentes partes alrededor.

La Vereda del Lago es un espacio para unificar cielo, lago y ciudad, en medio de una naturaleza que une familias y amigos; desde donde la actividad portuaria se transforma en el ambiente pictórico que define la riqueza del país, mientras la gente descansa y festeja la vida.
