Exploring Langfield Lowlands Nature Reserve

It was a good start to the day. The weather was fine as we paid a visit to the nature reserve, Langfield Lowlands in Nottinghamshire, UK which is in the next county to us.

However, the sky looked a little imposing but hopefully the weather would be kind to us. There wasn’t much shelter about if it rained.

The information board states the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) is in partnership with the company Tarmac, to restore a sand and gravel quarry to provide a habitat for the wildlife.

In the distance, on the lake, we spotted swans, cormorants and egrets.

We are still having some mild weather so the sloe berries are still going strong. They can be used for jam or to make sloe gin.

A few snails perhaps starting their hibernation. They seal the openings of their shell with mucus. I didn't know until a while back that if a snail has a small break in its shell they can actually repair it by secreting calcium carbonate. Nature is amazing.

The migrant hawker dragonfly is a common species and can be quite often found in places like this. There were quite a few darting around.

It was a lovely place to walk around the lakes. It was very peaceful and it was really enjoyable watching the birds. There are many different walks to choose from. It probably could get a bit boggy during the winter but that's only to be expected.

Is this the newish reserve near Newark? We went about 3 years ago, not long after it first opened to the public... looks we're long overdue a 2nd visit to see how it has changed!

Fab pics too!

Thank you. Yes, it's the same one, newish….still mined as a gravel pit in places by Tarmac.

ok cool... it was still in use last time as we used the wrong road and ended up in a quarry surrounded by heavy machinery and confused workmen, we turned around sharpish!

That DOES look like a wonderful place for a walk!

Love the photos with the endless skies and that snail picture is extra interesting There certainly is no time that a field of sun flowers isn't a beautiful thing for our eyes to behold.

Thank you. I love sunflower fields too. I actually have a tattoo of a sunflower on my arm in memory of my mum. 🙂
