I have the very personal impression that if in something most of the urban architects of all times, of all regions and all cultures, have coincided in creating parks as an intrinsic part of those urban environments.

The parks seem to have the main mission of breaking the architectural monotony of the cities, whatever their size (the cities) or (the parks).

Then comes that of if the parks are like lungs with which the cities breathe, and that they purify - if they are wooded - the poisonous compounds that emanate from the life in society.

It is true that there are cities that because of their size deserve more parks, while others have almost enough.

In the head city of my province, Pinar del Rio, Cuba, for being a not very big city, I believe that it is abundant in parks (by its general denominsción) that sometimes do not happen to be "little parks" that replace with some banks and a quantity X of plants, the spaces that have left some demolished buildings.

But there are also parks of notable relevance, either for their history, their structures, or for their geographic location.

Today I will talk about the most emblematic of all.
Its name helps you to recognize it: Independence Park.

This park is located in the highest geographical point of the city and is the oldest, because before it was the parade ground of the colonial power in the province.

It began to function as what it is today and civic plaza in 1917, but according to the historian of the city, during the government of Carlos Prio Socarras, it was demolished to convert it into a parking lot for automobiles.

At the triumph of the revolution it was built with the structure it shows today, with its cement benches and its gazebo where in times of the republic concerts, retretas and other activities organized by the committee "Todo por pinar" were held.

At the tip of the knife that make Marti and Antonio Macrostreets, and where just begins the Alameda, exhibits its bearing of main east park, where the passerby takes a break if coming uphill from the expansion of the city to the east, lovers meet, and high school students take advantage of the absence of a teacher to chat or plan their youthful evenings.

The gazebo, which always evokes the world of the arts and the muses, with its traditional cupola but letting in modernity through its cubist and racoonalist structure, located in the center of the luminous public space, is almost always empty, for there people perhaps sit in the open and under everyone's gaze.

The well-polished concrete benches are wide and comfortable and are placed all around and facing the center. Another circular row surrounds the gazebo looking from the center outward.

According to the historian of the city, this open architectural space was originally surrounded by the main buildings of the colonial power, including the house of the person appointed to exercise the powers during the colony, and which for some years has been the headquarters of the Provincial Center of Visual Arts in the territory.

There, in the highest part, with its gazebo evoking the universe of the muses, is the "Parque Independencia" overlooking the city of which it has long ceased to be the center. Because it has been lengthened downhill to the flatter part.

Tengo la impresion muy personal de que si en algo han coincidido la mayoria de los arquitectos urbanistas de todos los tiempos, de todas las regiones y todas las culturas, ha sido en crear los parques como.parte intrínsecas de esos entornos urbanos.

Los parques parecen tener la principal mision de romper la monotonia arquitectonica de las ciudades, tengan el tamaño que tengan( la ciudades) o ( los parques)

Despues viene aquello de que si los parques son como pulmones con los que respiran las ciudades, y que purifican_ si estan arbolados_ los comp.uestos venenosos que emanan de la vida en sociedad

Es verdad que hay ciudades que por su tamaño entonces merecen mas parques, mientras que otros casi les sobran los que tienen.

En la ciudad cabecera de mi.provncia, Pinar del Rio, Cuba, por ser una ciudad no muy grande, creo que es abundante en parques ( por su denominscion general) que a veces no pasan de ser " parquecitos" que sustituyen con algunos bancos y una cantidad X de plantas, los espacios que han dejado algunos edificios demolidos.

Pero tambien tiene parques de notadas relevancias, ya sea por su historias, sus extructuras, o por la ubicacion geografica.

Hoy le hablaré de el mas emblematico de todos .
Su nombre le ayuda en el reconocimiento : Parque Independencia.

Este parque esta ubicado en el punto geografico mas elevado de la ciudad y es el mas antiguo , pues antes que parque fue la plaza de armas del poder colonial en la provincia

Comenzó a fungir como lo que es hoy y plaza cívica a partir de 1917, pero segun el historiador de la ciudad, durante el gobierno de Carlos Prio Socarras, fue demolido para convertirlo en parqueo para automoviles.

Al triunfo de la revolucion fue construido con la exructura que muestra hoy, con sus bancos de cemento y su glorieta en la que en tiempos de la república se celebraban concierto, retretas y otras actividades organizados por el comite " Todo por pinar"

En la punta del cuchillo que hacen las calle Marti y Antonio maceo y donde justo comienza la Alameda, exhibe su porte de parque principal este, donde el transeúnte toma un descanso si viene cuesta arriba desde la ampliacion de la ciudad hacia el Este, los enamorados se dan cita, y los estudiantes del nivel medio aprovechan la ausencia de algún profesor para charlar o.planificsr sus noches juveniles.

La glorieta que siempre evoca el mundo de las artes y las musas con su cupula tradiciona pero dejando entrar la modernidad straves de du extrucra ra cubista y racoonalista, ubicada en el centro del luminoso espacio público, casi siempre esta vacia, pues allí las personas quizás se sientan al descubierto y bajo la mirada de todos.

Los bancos de cemento bien pulidos, son amplios y confortables y estan ubicados a todo el alrededor y mirando hacia el centro.otra hilera ciecular rodea la glorieta mirando desde el centro hacia sfuera

Según el historiador de la ciudad, este espacio arquitectónico abierto, originalmente estuvo rodeado por los principales edificios del poder colonial, incluyendo la vivienda del designado para ejercer los poderes durante la colonia, y que desde hace unos años es la cede del Centro provincial de las artes visuales en el territorio.

Alla, en la parte mas alta , con su glorieta evocando el universo de las musas, está el "Parque Independencia" observando la ciudad de la que hace tiempo ya dejó de ser centro. Porque se le fue alargando cuesta abajo hasta la parte mas llana.
Si vienes por la capital pinareña, no dejes de sentarte por unos minutos en este hermoso lugar.
