A Skatepark hidden in the mountains of San Diego, Venezuela: Beauty, nature and a view

(Edited)

Very close to my home is the municipality of San Diego, in the state of Carabobo. By car, from where I live, it's about 20 minutes. It is the most organized, cleanest and best skate culture city in the state. Naturally, it is not surprising that they have a Skatepark that at its peak was one of the best in Venezuela. It was built less than 10 years ago and has an area that not only encompasses the typical skateboard skate, but also an area for BMX and inline skates.

San Diego's Skate Park is located in the highest area of that city. Since I don't have a car, I had to take a bus; which I did. The funny thing is that it doesn't go all the way to the park; in fact, it only goes so far. So, I had to walk along with my boyfriend who lives in that city in order to get there. It is a challenging climb. From the instant we started the hike you could sense that we were starting to climb up a mountain; the base at least.

It was a rainy day that day. It hadn't stopped raining since early morning throughout the state, not just in San Diego. The weather was behaving strangely for fall. It would rain hard, stop, drizzle again, stop completely and then, out of absolute nothingness, begin another few hours of drizzle alternating with brief bouts of calm. Personally, I found it fantastic. We had a lot of walking to do, and that cool weather makes everything easier for you is a benefit to me, haha.

We arrived, at last. It was around nine o'clock in the morning. The mist was rolling down the mountains that were just a few meters away from us. The pictures really don't do justice to the distance between the mountains, the Skate Park and us. My girlfriend had told me that this area was very famous for the proliferation of bobcats. Although normally, in any part of the world they would be considered wild animals, they had learned to relate to humans..... Hours went by and I never saw one.

My boyfriend told me that when he was a kid (he is now 33) almost all the kids his age used to go skateboarding. Although the park is relatively new in time, there used to be an ordinary park (yes, the one for exercising that we all know) and the skater community would go there to have a good time and to listen to music and enjoy themselves without any disturbances. He continued his story, explaining that although skateboarding as a sport was born in the United States, he felt and assured that nowhere in Venezuela skate as in San Diego.

That amazed me. Because I knew about San Diego's famous skater culture, but I had never witnessed it with my own eyes. Several things are known about this municipality: the love for rock and roll, the weather and above all, the bunch of kids and not so young people who in one way or another have skated or practiced some extreme sport. This site was made with public money from the local Mayor's Office; which means that the maintenance belongs to the San Diego authority...

I would like to mention a negative point in these brief lines. The infrastructure of the park is beautiful. The road to get there, the delicious climate, the decorative mountains, and everything about culture and enjoyment, but the accesses once arrived; the lighting conditions of that place and above all, the green areas that surround it are in deplorable conditions; lamentable. I tried to capture the beauty that was available, both in landscapes and in its ramps to skate but there are things that are undeniable.

The San Diego Skate Park is one of several that exist throughout the state of Carabobo. It was one of the pioneers in the area and to this day enjoys a rich culture that supports it. Surrounded by nature and the always cool climate of the sector where it is located, it is a stop for those who love adrenaline, rock and roll and especially extreme sports. It also offers a 180 degree view of San Diego, Valencia, Guacara (where I live) and is captivating to the senses. I hope, if you can, you will visit it; it is beautiful.

There are urban treasures in each of our cities. Undoubtedly, this beautiful Skate Park in the middle of the misty mountains is one of those city beauties. Thanks for reading, and I take this opportunity to make clear that the photographs are my own.

@hotspotitaly
