When I stepped on that land I could do nothing but feel love. I fell in love again with a place. Bethlehem is not exactly the place you would be attracted to.

The city has been separated from Jerusalem by a wall that exceeds the height of the Berlin Wall, and poverty and sadness can be breathed even from the asphalt of the streets.

Bethlehem is a somewhat desolate place, which lives almost entirely on tourism and has been displaced territorially from Israel, and I must say, socially as well.

The tension between Palestine and Israel is constantly growing, both for political and religious issues, and Bethlehem is precisely in Palestine, precisely in the West Bank.

However, my name is Bethlehem, and I have always loved it. Being in the city from which my name comes, somehow, filled my heart with love.

Hola mis queridos hivers, hoy los llevaré a pasear una vez más por el Medio Oriente, en este caso por Palestina, nos vamos a la ciudad de Belén.

Cuando pisé aquella tierra no pude hacer más que sentir amor. Me enamoré otra vez de un lugar. No es exactamente Belén ese lugar por el que sentirías atracción.

La ciudad ha quedado separada de Jerusalén por un muro que supera en altura al muro de Berlín, y la pobreza y tristeza puede respirarse hasta del asfalto de las calles.

Belén es un lugar un tanto desolado, que vive casi en su totalidad del turismo y que ha sido desplazado territorialmente de Israel, y debo decir que socialmente también.

La tensión entre Palestina e Israel crece de manera constante, tanto por cuestiones políticas como religiosas, y Belén se encuentra justamente en Palestina, precisamente en Cisjordania.

I traveled to Bethlehem with my friend Kevin, he is from California, USA, and we met while volunteering in Tel Aviv.

Coincidentally, he was on his way to Jerusalem, and I, almost on the same date as him, was traveling to that city, so we shared a lot of time together even though we were in different hostels.

We went to Bethlehem on a Saturday, a day when all of Jerusalem would be closed for Shabbat (Jewish celebration), but everything pertaining to Islam, including the public transportation service, would be active.

So we took a bus to Bethlehem. The first thing we visited was the wall, which I have previously talked about in another post. And then, we walked a lot through the streets of this city until we reached the different points of interest.

Belen not only offers a cultural spectacle in each of the most visited places, but walking its streets (something that not many people do for fear), offers the possibility of talking to vendors who are always willing to tell their story.

This happened to us while buying bread. A man named "Sammy" came up to us and told us that he would offer us the best tea we had ever tasted. With Kevin we hesitated whether to go or not, but the man invited us to sit at the door of his small place to give us a tea, and there it is frowned upon to despise such an invitation.

So, we sat down.

Sammy turned out to be quite a character, his tea is not only the tastiest I have ever tasted in my life, but Sammy is almost famous! He told us that Conan Goes came to his place and that he was on YouTube with him. As soon as we could, we corroborated that this information was true, and yes ladies and gentlemen! It is true. Belén no solamente ofrece un espectáculo a nivel cultural en cada uno de los lugares más visitados, sino que caminar sus calles (algo que no muchas personas hacen por temor), brinda la posibilidad de hablar con vendedores que están siempre dispuestos a contar su historia.

Nos pasó esto comprando pan. Se acercó un tal “Sammy”, a decirnos que nos ofrecería el mejor té que jamás hubiésemos probado. Con Kevin dudamos de si ir o no, pero el hombre nos invitaba a sentarnos en la puerta de su pequeño local a regalarnos un te, y allá está muy mal visto despreciar una invitación así.

Por lo tanto, nos sentamos.

Sammy resultó ser todo un personaje, su te no solamente es el más rico que he probado en mi vida, sino que Sammy es casi famoso! Nos contó que a su local llegó Conan Goes y que salía en YouTube con el. Ni bien pudimos, corroboramos que esta información fuese cierta, y sí señoras y señores! Es así. I followed him and as soon as we arrived, I don't know how he managed to talk to the receptionist (who was also the hotel accountant), so that she would allow us access to the terrace. She took us in, showed us around the restaurant and even took our picture.

En el camino, tuvimos mucha suerte, porque estábamos buscando un buen lugar desde donde obtener una vista panorámica, y yo jamás me hubiese atrevido a hacer lo que hizo Kevin, hehe.

Íbamos caminando y vio un tremendo hotel, y me dijo, “vamos, este hotel debe tener buena vista”. Yo lo seguí y en cuanto llegamos, no sé cómo hizo para hablar con la recepcionista (que también era la contadora del hotel), para que nos permitiera acceder a la terraza. Ella nos llevó, nos mostró el restaurante y hasta nos tomó una foto.

Another thing we visited was the Palestinian Heritage Center, which to our surprise was quite small, but filled with objects representative of that country.

Otra cosa que visitamos fue el Centro de Patrimonio Palestino, que para nuestra sorpresa era bastante pequeño, pero estaba repleto de objetos representativos de aquel país.

Although my tour of Belen was quite fleeting, since it lasted one day, I had a beautiful experience and learned a lot in those hours. We managed to visit the most outstanding sites of the city, and we also socialized with locals, which was the richest part of that visit.

Aunque mi paseo por Belén fue bastante fugaz, ya que duró un día, tuve una hermosa experiencia y aprendí mucho en aquellas horas. Logramos visitar los sitios más destacados de la ciudad, y además socializamos con locales, lo cual fue lo más rico de aquella visita.
