Accidentally arriving to a dream place: El Limonero reservoir and Botanical Garden, Malaga
In my attempt to reach a historical viewpoint located in Malaga, I ended up arriving at the dam or reservoir El Limonero. I was very grateful for that confusion.
The reservoir El Limonero is a place that is about an hour away from the city of Malaga if you use public transportation. And that's because from where the bus drops you off, you have to walk a little over half an hour to get there, as is the case with the Botanical Garden.
Besides reading blogs about the places to visit when I travel, I really like to simply look at a digital map (I usually use Google Maps) and see what are the points that the application highlights. This has led me many times to visit places that have not been promoted but are beautiful, and I have been able to see delicious and exclusive views of the different destinations.
This was the case of my visit to El Limonero Dam.
What I had seen on the map was not this, but a historic viewpoint that could be reached by bus and after a 40-minute walk. As I enjoy walking, I embarked on the little adventure.
Despite looking at the map, I ended up getting lost because I came to a winding street where many cars were passing, so it was vital to look ahead. When I looked at the map again, the path indicated that I was very close to the place from where I had to turn to start walking towards the viewpoint.
When I saw the sign for El Limonero Dam, I interpreted that my destination was inside, so I started walking. The scenery was a delight. I continued walking and came to see the El Limonero dam, which I fell in love with because it reminded me of my city, Mendoza, specifically an area called Potrerillos, only that in this case what I had on one side were the mountains and on the other side stretched the beautiful Mediterranean Sea.
Already in front of the reservoir, I walked to the end of the bridge where I was, and when I turned around, I saw it, in the distance and below the height where I was, there was the viewpoint being visited by other people.
I looked for stairs, paths, walked some more. There was no way to access the site from the point where I was, so I started to descend, looking permanently for the access point that I would have missed on my way up. Nothing...
Fortunately I came across two men who I asked how to get to the viewpoint, and they told me it wasn't that way, that I had to enter the Botanical Garden. So guess what... Yes, that's where I went.
The Botanical Garden of Malaga
The entrance fee cost me €5, and I didn't want to pay it because I wasn't going to have time to visit too much of that Garden, but I really wanted to see that viewpoint, since after identifying it on the map, I had looked for its pictures and it promised to be a beauty. For this reason, I entered the Botanical Garden of Malaga.
A beauty. What little I saw of the rest of the attraction was beautiful. They were also getting ready for Christmas and decorating it beautifully.
I was amused that there were penguins adorning a small hill, hehe. On the Costa del Sol, full of warmth, penguins, what were those little animals doing there? I think that maybe they wanted, from the garden management, to offer the most Nordic or austral scenery possible.
Historic Viewpoint
Inside the Garden, after walking for about 7 minutes along a path that could be followed on the map, one arrived at the viewpoint. An absolute beauty.
I was thankful I decided to go inside because not only was the view beautiful, but there was a whole structure with a fountain that was worth the visit.
From there I took some pictures and sat for a while contemplating the scenery and taking in the warmth and sunlight, which felt wonderful. I also played a bit with my cell phone camera, placing it on the ground to take automatic pictures, something I hadn't done for a long time.
I was very happy because in the end I was not only able to go to this destination that had caught my attention, but I also took a bonus, which was the reservoir El Limonero, which to be very honest, I ended up liking more than the Mirador Histórico.
Anyway, both sites are a delight and I recommend doing this 2x1 if anyone is planning to visit Malaga.

Thank you!!
You're welcome!😊
The weather is so good and the nature is so beautiful that it blends into the pictures you take. so perfect..
I’m glad you like the place! Thanks a lot!!
That moment when you realise the viewpoint actually needs the garden entrance made me smile. The five euro felt like a smart detour because the fountain setting and that warm sun time are the kind of returns my budget brain lvoed. Your right, sometimes the map sends us the long way and it ends up defintely better than plan :)
I loved how the map and destiny led me there! Thank you!!
When maps and destiny team up, your bound to stumble into the good stuff :)
Loved that de;tour turning into a two for one, reservoir and garden both, it felt like a tiny win.
Here’s to more happy wrong turns that lead you there , and memories that glow just a bit longer :)

Hello @belug, thank you for showing us this 2-for-1 deal. The images of the viewpoint are wonderful, and it's a shame you couldn't spend more time at the Botanical Garden. The photo of the penguin is quite peculiar.
