A Woman Transformed into a Wonder of the World: The Taj Mahal

Hello, dear friends at Hive!! Today I’m going to share a little bit about the Taj Mahal with you.

You’ll see some of the grounds where this modern wonder of the world is located, as well as a really cute little café—as they’d say in Spain—from where you can get a great view.

First, I have to tell you that I went because I had to fulfill that tourist obligation, hehe. I’m not a huge fan of these kinds of places, but since it’s just a few hours from the city of Agra, I didn’t think I could get away with not visiting this global icon of history, culture, and architecture.

Hola queridos amigos de Hive!! Hoy voy a estar compartiendo con ustedes un poquito del Taj Mahal.

Verán algo del predio donde se encuentra esta maravilla del mundo moderno, y también un cafecito muy mono, como dirían en España, desde donde se puede ver muy bien.

Primero debo decirles que fui porque debía responder a ese mandato de turista, jeje. No soy muy fan de este tipo de lugares, pero, estando a unas horas de la ciudad de Agra, no creía que me perdonara no pasar por este exponente mundial de historia, cultura y arquitectura.

Essential Information Before Visiting the Taj Mahal

Here’s a list to make things easier:

• Fridays is closed
• It’s best to buy your ticket online, since it’s a little cheaper. It costs around €10 for the grounds. That said, I didn’t find the entrance to the Taj Mahal itself there, but I didn’t look too hard either, since I wasn’t interested in going inside.
• Many people go with a private guide who explains everything, but you can easily go on your own, which is what I did.
• The best time to go is at sunrise, around 6:30 a.m. or a little earlier. It’s open then, and not only is the light excellent at this hour, but there are fewer people.
• The line to get in is separated by gender, as in most of India, and there’s a significant wait—at least 40 minutes—so you’ll need to factor that time into your visit.
• Inside the grounds, there are photographers offering their services, and some will even offer to take a photo of you on the spot and then charge you for it.
• You have to run all your belongings through a scanner, and if anything looks suspicious, they’ll make you leave your bag and everything else in a locker up front.

Les dejo una lista, para no hacerlo tan tedioso:

• Los viernes está cerrado
• Conviene comprar la entrada por internet, ya que sale un poco más barata. Son alrededor de €10 para el predio. Lo que sí, yo no encontré ahí el ingreso al mismo Taj Mahal, pero tampoco busqué demasiado, ya que no era de mi interés entrar.
  Muchas personas van con un guía privado que les explica todo, pero se puede ir sola tranquilamente, que es lo que yo hice
• El mejor horario es al amanecer, sobre las 6:30 am o un poco antes. Sí está abierto y no solamente la luz es excelente a esta hora, sino que hay menos cantidad de gente.
• La fila para ingresar se divide en hombres y mujeres, como en casi todo India, y tiene su buena demora, de unos 40 minutos seguro, por lo que hay que considerar ese tiempo dentro de la visita.
• Dentro del predio hay fotógrafos ofreciendo sus servicios y hay algunos que directamente te ofrecen hacerte una foto para luego cobrártela.
• Tenés que pasar todas tus pertenencias por un escáner y si hay algo extraño, te hacen dejar bolso y todo en un locker de adelante.

The Taj Mahal

Once inside the grounds, you can enjoy the immaculate gardens and the imposing monument, which is actually… a tomb.

A very wealthy man, following the death of his wife and in her honor—out of the love he had for her—decided to build her a beautiful mausoleum, which is none other than the Taj Mahal itself.

I heard this story while a guide was telling it to someone else; he was explaining that the father had told his daughter he would build a beautiful mausoleum because he truly loved her mother.
And I thought: wow! And the woman was immortalized through this, as it became a wonder of the world, recognized and visited by millions of people.

Then I checked this on Google’s AI, Gemini, and it told me that yes, Emperor Shah Jahan did indeed create this masterpiece in honor of his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. I didn’t know she was his favorite.

Una vez en el predio, podés disfrutar de los impecables jardines y del imponente monumento, que es en verdad… una tumba.

Un hombre muy adinerado, tras el fallecimiento de su esposa y en su honor, por el amor que le tenía, decidió construirle un hermoso mausoleo, que es el mismísimo Taj Mahal.

Escuché esta historia mientras un guía se lo comentaba a otra persona, le decía que el padre le había dicho a su hija que haría un hermoso mausoleo porque amaba de verdad a su madre.

Y yo pensé: vaya! Y la mujer se inmortalizó con esto, pues se convirtió en una maravilla del mundo, reconocida y visitada por millones de personas.

Luego chequeé esto en la IA de Google, Gemini, y me respondió que sí, que efectivamente el emperador Shah Jahan creó esta obra en honor a su esposa favorita, Mumtaz Mahal. No sabía lo de favorita.

My Favorite View

If you go to Agra, where the Taj Mahal is located, I highly recommend you go inside the grounds, since, as I mentioned earlier, this human creation is truly awe-inspiring. It really is a magnificent gem.

But… you know I’m more of a crowd-avoider, so rather than standing there with the masses gazing at the monument, I enjoyed going to Chía Taj View Cafe to admire it from a distance.

I much preferred the experience of sipping a lassi in silence while looking at the Taj Mahal to standing there dodging people and trying to take a good photo.

That said, I still choose both options, as they are very different experiences.

Mi vista preferida

Si vas a Agra, que es donde está el Taj Mahal, te recomiendo sí o sí ingresar al predio, ya que es muy imponente como dije previamente, esta creación humana. Es una joya erguida realmente.

Pero… ya saben que yo soy más de evitar las muchedumbres, por lo que más que estar ahí con la masa mirando al monumento, disfruté ir al Chía Taj View Cafe a contemplarlo desde la distancia.

Me gustó mucho más la experiencia de tomar un lassi en silencio mientras veía al Taj Mahal, que estar de pie esquivando gente e intentando hacer una buena foto.

Habiendo dicho esto, sigo eligiendo ambas opciones, pues son experiencias muy diferentes.

How to Get to Agra?

Agra is part of India’s Golden Triangle, a name given purely for tourism purposes. I arrived by train from Jaipur, but most people book a tour to visit Jaipur, Agra, and Delhi.

I think it’s a good option if you’re traveling in a group or as a couple, since it covers the most important sites and avoids public transportation in that part of India, which can be a bit chaotic.

If you’re traveling alone, I recommend public transportation, unless you’re sure there are other women in the tour group. I say this because I booked one in Mumbai where it was just me and two men, and I didn’t have a very good time.

¿Cómo llegar a Agra?

Agra es parte del Triángulo Dorado de India, llamado así por motivos meramente turísticos. Yo llegué en tren desde Jaipur, pero la mayoría de la gente se reserva un tour para visitar en el mismo: Jaipur, Agra y Delhi.

Creo que es una buena opción al ir en grupo o en pareja, ya que cubren los puntos más importantes y evitan el transporte público en esa zona de India, que es algo caótico.

Si vas sola, recomiendo el transporte público, salvo que tengas garantía de que en el grupo del tour hay más mujeres. Esto lo digo porque reservé uno en Mumbai en donde era yo y dos hombres, y no la pasé muy bien.
