The city's historical memory park 📷 Malaga – Spain

The first time I passed by this place was two years ago, and I only saw a large pyramid from the outside, without imagining that there were amazing wonders inside. But just seeing that pyramid aroused my curiosity; I had to know what was in that place, and like a good explorer, I delved into the investigation.

Of course, my great friend, the computer map, helped me find out what was there. I always discover new things, and that motivates me and I love it. According to the map, there is a large green area, too large. What I did was divide it in half and visit the place in parts so as not to miss anything.

20250521_161118.jpg

To get there, I took a bus, and since the main street is an avenue, many buses pass by the place. The park is called San Rafael Park and was built on top of an old cemetery, a very old one, but that's another story that I'll tell you later, a fascinating story. I haven't found out much yet, but it's part of the second part of my tour, which I'll do soon.

20250521_161201.jpg

20250521_161203.jpg

20250521_161227.jpg

This time, when I entered the park, I could immediately see the large pyramid, which at first I didn't know what it was, but as I got closer, I realised that it is a pantheon, the pantheon of Malaga's historical memory. A reminder of the many deaths that occurred in the Spanish Civil War and a tribute to all those who died.

20250521_161516.jpg20250521_161408.jpg

The names and surnames of many people are inscribed on it, and I felt that those lives were sadly represented there, but there they were. I walked around it and saw more and more inscriptions on all its sides. Then, in one area, there were ramps and stairs leading to a part where there were some doors, but they were closed.

The pyramid stands majestically in the centre of the park and divides it in half. I had already decided that I would explore the area to the left of the pyramid and see what surprises it had in store for me. The surprise was huge.

20250521_161720.jpg

20250521_161748.jpg

20250521_161932.jpg

I started my walk along one of the several paths to the left of the pyramid, all of them full of flowering bushes and lots of vegetation, but not much shade, so the heat was noticeable, especially at this time of year. The trees I could see were pines, but they did not provide any shade. I decided to walk around the whole place anyway.

I saw a gazebo, headed towards it, and when I arrived, I was surprised by a beautiful lagoon.

20250521_162007.jpg

20250521_162218.jpg

The landscape they have created in this place is amazing. The pyramid is the centrepiece, and from every angle of the lagoon, because I walked around its entire length, you can see it as the important monument that it is. I feel like it's a park, but it merges with the history of the city.

I always say there is so much to see and so important, but these places are not usually included in the tours offered to tourists. They only show them the centre, but the gems are everywhere. This is one of them.

20250521_162438.jpg

20250521_162347.jpg

20250521_162410.jpg

I was enchanted by the lagoon, the ducks swimming there, playing and having fun. And around the lagoon there are rocks, plants, bushes, and a natural environment that is a dream.

I have been a fan of Egypt since I was a child and for a moment, even though I know it's not, I felt like I was on the Nile River next to one of the famous pyramids. Dreaming is free.

20250521_163116.jpg

20250521_163120.jpg

Following the outline of the lagoon, I came to a rocky area that was accessed by stairs. Of course, I climbed up, and the views were beautiful.

20250521_163529.jpg

When I finished this part, I realised that I still had a long way to go within the limits I had set for myself, so I continued my walk. I came to a dreamlike playground with lots of games, shade and lots of colours. I guess there will be lots of children playing there this summer. Many people ask me why there are no people in my photographs. I try to take photos when there are no people around, to preserve privacy, and I also like walking this way, as I can appreciate the scenery better.

20250521_163557.jpg

20250521_163611.jpg

20250521_163659.jpg

This colourful playground led me to another, very unusual one, where the games were wooden animals, very original, although there were also swings, which were more traditional.

20250521_164023.jpg

20250521_164138.jpg

20250521_164244.jpg

The playgrounds led me to a path that went up and up, and I decided to follow it. Every day I enjoy adventure and discovering new places more and more. This park seemed endless.

From the height and on a path with flowers, vegetation and palm trees, I could see the path I had travelled, the lake, the playground, everything. There was no one there, just me and this beauty.

20250521_164550.jpg

20250521_164614.jpg

20250521_164559.jpg

I descended that hill and came across this place that looked like an amphitheatre, although in reality it is just seats, but my imagination is big.

20250521_164757.jpg

20250521_164754.jpg

I could see a vast green space, trees, more paths, and although there isn't much shade, it's still wonderful.

20250521_163959.jpg

I made my way to one of the many exits, although not all of them were open, and I left with the dream of having been in a place that had a lot of history, having been a cemetery, and which has been refurbished into something beautiful.

Thank you very much for joining me today. Best regards. See you soon.

Good morning, dear friend @avdesing

I can't believe this beautiful place was built on top of a large period cemetery.

What a beautiful place, full of gorgeous flowering plants. The pyramid is very striking. If you hadn't mentioned it, I would have thought it was a pantheon, a meaningful reminder of the souls who fell in war.

I love how well-preserved it is and all the children's play areas.

Beautiful photographs.

Enjoy a beautiful afternoon.

Hi @avdesing, looking at that pyramid and reading the text, I can't come to any other conclusion than someone thought of you when that park was made. A pyramid and the echo of an ancient cenenterium all together.

You are right when you say that tourist routes leave out many things of great value, so I thank you for this visit to this unique park.

A big hug.

Good afternoon, Amonet.

It's great that you returned to this beautiful park, and that you were able to experience the beauty of the place.

I loved the lagoon and the ducks. The children's playground is my favorite. I would spend hours there.

This park is huge. You did well dividing it into two parts to explore.

Beautiful photographs.

What a fantastic idea to put that pyramid there. The place has an Egyptian vibe. I believe the pyramid used to look white, so that element of the design is accurate. It needs a golden capstone on top though. :)

Reading your blog, I felt that this park is a wonderful combination of history and nature. The most important thing here is that the memory of the Spanish Civil War is highlighted through this pyramid. I am really impressed by reading your blog. Thank you very much for sharing your experience of traveling to such an important historical and heartwarming place with us.

This looks like a great park, tons of cool structures for the kids to play on, and a cool pyramid for the adults to daydream about. Seeing the pyramid next to the water, with the little palm trees sticking out I had the same thoughts about being on the shore of the Nile. Perhaps the only thing this park is missing is people haha ...and maybe some more shade. Hope you enjoyed the rest of your day!

Málaga is full of beauty on every corner. I have a cousin who lives there, and I'm always fascinated by the atmosphere and charm of the place. This post confirms once again that there's much to discover in the Iberian Peninsula.

How incredible what you discovered on your tour! It's truly fascinating how, sometimes, what seems like just a park or a monument in the city can hide so many stories. That first glimpse of the pyramid reminded me so much of those moments when something catches our attention and we can't help but feel immensely curious about what lies behind it. I love how you slowly explored the place, discovering every corner and connecting history with nature.

Also, the comparison with the Nile River and the pyramids of Egypt gives a very personal touch to your experience. The photos you shared truly convey that mix of tranquility and mystery one feels when being in a place like this, where history and natural beauty intersect. The lagoon, the playground equipment, and that feeling of exploring a site almost forgotten by tourists make this park a true hidden gem.

It's a shame these places aren't on the most common tourist routes, but how lucky you were to have found them. Thank you for sharing such a detailed and charming tour. I would love to see more of your explorations!
