Liberated painting, when art expresses itself without ties 📷 Málaga - Spain

In the mind and in the heart we are always free, but when that freedom can be expressed outwardly it reaches its fullness and for artists it is a way of communicating things.

A few days ago I started to see posters in the streets of the city, especially the more central streets, announcing that there was a new art exhibition at the Museo Carmen Thyssen. It is one of those museums where one is practically guaranteed, or at least I am, that I will see works that I personally like, even if not all of them are, but I will certainly find them interesting.

20250406_171152.jpg20250406_171213.jpg

In this case the name of the exhibition says it all, ‘Liberated Painting’, where more than thirty paintings by more than 20 different artists are on display. Paintings that correspond to a time of liberation of the possibility of expressing oneself. A time when democracy arrived and there was no censorship or ties to be able to demonstrate art with different techniques.

20250406_172546.jpg

The paintings correspond to the time of the 80s when each artist was able to give free rein to his or her way of expressing things, free rein to forms, techniques, colours. Above all, what I liked most and what caught my attention is the explosion of colours, very bright, very vivid, with combinations that are pleasing to the eye.

The exhibition will be on display until 14 September this year and it is really worthwhile. As soon as I entered the museum, after passing through the scanner where they check what you carry in your bag, I saw signs leading to this exhibition and two smaller, temporary ones.

20250406_172527.jpg20250406_172602.jpg

At first glance it would seem that everything is similar, but in reality each artist has had a difference with the others, a heterogeneous and colourful exhibition, as I mentioned before. Figurative painting from those years when freedom was re-emerging and a new modern style was emerging. It gave way, as some of the posters in the place mention, to a stage of contemporary Spanish art where art and especially painting acquired new explorations and each artist offered varied and renewed alternatives, original and with a lot of imagination.

I believe that when an artist can express himself in this way it is a real pleasure for the soul to paint and this task has neither time nor space, one immerses oneself in the paintings and the burst of colour and nothing else exists. At least that's what happens to me.

The paintings were all very large, on canvas and also of various formats, there was freedom and not something structured. In this way we can see works by artists who, although they had been around for years, it was in the 1980s that their expression intensified.

Some of the artists we can find in the great hall are: Gordillo, Arroyo, Franco, Alcolea, Pérez Villalta, Cobo, Quejido and Molero among others such as García Sevilla, Barceló, Patiño, Lamas, Gadea and Ugalde.

Although they were all different, the core of their work was the fact of expressing painting in a new way, giving it, of course, a personal touch. A more positive painting made with joy and this is shown in so much colour. A great figurative style made known by these artists and many more all over Spain, many of them coming from the community of Andalusia.

As the exhibition is called, you can see works that do not follow patterns, where there is freedom, not imposed forms, rebellious paintings where the painters expressed themselves for the pleasure of what they were doing.

Of course if any work catches your attention or you like it more you can let me know in the comments or if any of them impressed you. Many of them are strong but real and show what the artist had inside him. There were no rules.

This work was one of my favourites because of the colours, the textures and the eyes, which belong to Miguel Barceló.

It was noticeable as I walked around the room, which was divided into three sectors, that the shapes, the colours, the style changed from one painter to another, but all the works had something attractive about them.

20250406_173242.jpg

For example, this is a work on which people stopped a lot, to look at its details. And it is the work chosen to make the posters that are all over the city announcing the exhibition.

I was very surprised by the number of people who came to the museum that day, although on Sundays from four o'clock in the afternoon it is free and there are always people waiting to get in, on this occasion there were more than usual. And this exhibition really was refreshing, free and worth admiring in every detail.

Of course, as is the museum's custom in its shop, there are always items relating to the art exhibitions visited and they are all beautiful, from books to decorations. It was a wonderful tour, where I was able to appreciate the free art, the art of liberation of a new and renewed era in modernity.

Thank you very much for joining me today. I send you my best regards. See you soon.

The paintings are beautiful. Each work takes me back to the past, when you visited the museums here in Venezuela.

Well the truth is that if it is a very colorful exhibition with very interesting and entertaining ways to observe is a very beautiful museum and it is seen that the squares are large.

It's an unusual set of paintings in that they border between the abstract and the real. This one caught my attention

I like your city more and more. It's impressive how many exhibitions there are, and how much beautiful art there is to enjoy.

I love these free works; it's great to see the artists express themselves freely.

I was struck by how many people of different ages were at the exhibition, something you also mentioned.

Thank you so much, dear friend @avdesing, for sharing this experience of your visit.

Have a wonderful afternoon.

Hi @avdesing, this time my tastes run the other way. I lived that time in Madrid with artists like Cesepe of whom I think the first work is his, I think I recognize some more of him and some other author from Madrid. I met Cesepe through the comic magazine Madriz (I think I still have a copy) and I think the influence of the comic and the world of posters and advertising is very marked in this exhibition. From that time I still like some proposals, and of course this exhibition takes me back to a very crazy Madrid... very fresh and, also, with an unkind side that never appears in the official account of the time.

Thank you very much for this walk, I had a great time...

I had never seen works like these before, I found them strange, some of them very crazy, but interesting for the time. It was an unusual exhibition. Thank you very much!

I leave you a link to the covers of Madriz, the magazine. To understand that such a magazine was edited by the city of Madrid can only be explained by the cultural moment that the city was living.... Let's see if you have time and you like it:

I like to talk about freedom, but the real freedom is in the mind of each person, and artists are free when they know how to be free. If they create without thinking about what is accepted or a target audience, for example, they are freer; if they don't worry about selling their art, but only about expressing themselves and freeing themselves at the level of the heart and soul. And that's life itself... we are free to the extent that we understand that we live a life that is uniquely ours and that is not a rehearsal. It simply passes and time runs out. Anyone who lives a life on loan or for others and neglects his own self will always be a slave.

As always it's a great walk between paintings and good art. I like some more than others. There is a lot of variety of styles here.

Thank you! 🤗

Great reflection and very accurate, artists can express themselves much more because they don't use words, many times they are freer. Thank you!🤗
