A REFRESHING WALK IN THE SNOW ... I WONDER WHAT'S BEEN AROUND LATELY.

@farm-mom and I have our way of letting each other know how we feel when asked. The reply is, I feel like a million bucks is as good as it gets. That's how I've been feeling lately.

On the morning of this walk, six inches of snow had fallen the night before. I knew a walk was in my future, especially with the way I was feeling. Our son was visiting for a few days and his dog Hunter tagged along. Since I was the first one up, I let the dog out to do his thing, sniff around, and chase a squirrel or two. By 10 A.M I was out the door, ready to go.

As I walked down the front steps I noticed his paw print on the landing. Seeing that I decided to go back into the house to grab the camera and see what other tracks might be imprinted in the freshly fallen snow.

All of the pictures of the wildlife in this post were captured here on the farm, but not during this walk. I've included them just to show you the animal responsible for leaving the tracks.

The first tracks I ran into were that of the White-Tailed Deer.

IMG_0171.JPG

The tracks that a deer leaves behind are unmistakable. I ran into these tracks throughout the entire walk.

IMG_9241.JPG

Here you can see that two of these magnificent animals were traveling on the same path.

IMG_9218.JPG

As the deer make their way through the landscape their gait is such that their legs land just off-center of their body, leaving tracks as you see here. Their stride is long and most times you can see that the snow has been disturbed between where their hooves landed. I would imagine that after a long winter, their legs are weary.

IMG_9214.JPG

This picture was taken at the end of last winter.

This White-Tailed deer has to weigh over 180 pounds. They can reach this size in as little as two and a half years, but most often, at this weight, they will be four or five years of age.

IMG_1628.JPG

This size footprint has been left behind by a larger deer.
As deer get larger their hooves will spread out when walking. Deer hooves are made up of keratin, which is the same thing our fingernails are made of.

IMG_9211.JPG

This disturbed area was created by a deer as it makes its way to the vegetation below.

IMG_9216.JPG

After visiting the top plantation I made my way to our pond, hoping to run into some different footprints.

IMG_9232.JPG

I was not disappointed!
A critter had walked around the rim of the pond. These prints were not left by a deer. My guess is that this trail was left by some sort of cat. We have spotted both a lynx and a bobcat on our property. Seeing these animals is rare and what a thrill it was to spot these cats in the wild, if only for a second.
Their paw print is more like a dog. Their trail leaves behind a single line in the snow as they walk with one foot being placed directly in front of the other.

IMG_9226.JPG

I took this photo this past summer. From the way he's cleaning his front paws he probably just got done dining on some leafy greens in our #hivegarden.

IMG_7115.JPG

This area was laden with his rabbit tracks.
A rabbit leaves another very distinguishable track. Their long front paws land side by side with a space between them while their back feet seem to land as one.

IMG_9208.JPG

From the looks of its track you would think that a rabbit only has three legs .

IMG_9210.JPG

Another common animal that calls Upstate New York its home is the turkey.

IMG_0570.JPG

The footprint of the wild turkey is a classic game bird track.

IMG_9553.JPG

It has three toes pointing forward with one small toe in the back.

That was one of the best walks I've had in a while years.

And I feel like a million bucks (borrowing your words for a bit) being able to take this investigative walk through your photos. It's fascinating that a few guests have given your place a visit and left their tracks too. It's great and fun to learn to identify the footprints on the snow :)

I'm happy you enjoyed this post! After a new round of snow has fallen it's unbelievable how much activity there is on the farm. You don't often see the animals, they are very skittish and they usually spot you before you spot them, and off the go.

That's the beauty of #hive, you get to see places while sitting at home.
Now that I'm able to walk around, I'll be seeing your more often.
Have a splendid day!

Wow, so many footprints you have found! I would gladly walk there around, though my footprints would not be as nice as these animals left. I guess I would have to wear some boots hahah, the feeling of stepping on the cold snow must be exciting but also not that great in long term (long term - more than a few seconds 😂 )

You get used to the cold weather and if you didn't you'd get cabin fever after a week or so.

WOW, how nice you have all this in your backyard! Mister Jealous is showing his face around the corner, though I pushed him back outside again. I very much love such an amount of snow, while also nature and all the wild animals around are very nice. You must be a fortunate person. Ahhh you also said that in the opening :) Feeling like a million bucks {WINK} Super positive attitude and hopefully, you keep this until the end of time {BOW}

EDIT: Btw, what is the little house used for on the opposite side of the little (frozen) lake/pond?

I'll tell you what, if I could I'd send some snow your way, we get plenty of it.

I do have a lot to be thankful for, I guess all of that hard work paid off. I'm retired now and have been for the past 6 years. Every day when my feet hit the floor, I'm grateful for another day.

The house you see at the end of the pond is one of four that I built over the years. The main house I also built. Each cabin is named after one of our 4 children. We get lots of company here on the farm and the cabins are used for the overflow.

OWWWW WOW how nice! They are all yours and you build them yourself! 🙇 🙇 🙇
So funny when your kids visit, to put them into the cabins of their sisters and brothers, never in the one with their own name. Anyways, don't mind me 😂. 😂 😂
And living in the middle of nature with more than tons of snow in the wintertime.
I guess a few Huskies and you have a super nice transportation method while also having some extra living souls to spoil 🎶 🙃
