Meguro Sky Garden The Park On A Highway In Tokyo
Did you know there is a park on a highway right in the middle of Tokyo? Even though I knew of the highway and actually saw it being built 10 years ago, I didn't know about the park on top of it, until I saw it on TV about a week ago. So I went there for a walk yesterday and here's what I found.
Meguro Sky Garden is located 1.7 kilometers, just West of Shibuya station next to the Meguro River.
The structure that houses the park is a connector for the elevated expressway and the subterranean expressway.
Two high rise apartment towers make it's location easy to find. That and the fact that the highway that the park is built on reaches 35meters high, or about 115 feet.
However if you didn't know there is a park there you wouldn't think to venture up.
Once inside you forget that there is a busy express way underneath your feet.
You're transported to a beautiful tree lined garden.
Two paths traverse the rooftop park, one with steps and one with ramps only for wheelchairs. Both paths also have plenty of benches and stools to relax on.
The views are nice, but much of them are blocked by vegetation and a perimeter fence.
Even so, there are nice views to be had and the park itself is a refreshing escape from the concrete jungle.
The Cross Air Tower sits at the end or beginning of the park, depending on how you enter. It's a residential tower that also houses the Meguro City Administration Offices and the city library. One of the nice things about the building is there is a glass paneled walkway that allows full views of the city.
The opposite end allows you to see the interchange for the engineer inclined.
Back to the park, I noticed a flurry of green birds having lunch so I pulled out my Canon and tried to catch some.
The challenge was these birds would move a lot and as soon as they saw me pointing the camera at them. They were difficult to photograph. Even so, I did get a few decent shots.
It made me finally realize the attraction or game people have when photographing birds. It was very eye opening to finally understand the thrill of that hunt!
And with that I called it a walk and headed over to Shibuya Sky!
If you want to visit the Meguro Sky Garden it is easy to get to from Shibuya as noted at the beginning of this post. The park is open 365 days a year from 7am to 9pm.
There is a parking lot and sports field on the ground floor, but I didn't visit that area. There are drink vending machines and public restrooms at the park. I mention this because public restrooms are hard to find in Tokyo.

Thanks for reading!
such a beautiful view, the building is pretty cool too.
Thanks. Ya, towers are nice, but I don't want to live in one considering how many earthquakes we have.

I couldn't get my head around "a park on a highway right in the middle of Tokyo" at first, it's so kinda weird, but great idea to build something so tranquil in the middle of a concrete jungle
Ya, that was my "hook" to get readers in. It's true though!
I really admire people who think, well we have to build a highway so let's go all out and put a park on top and sports field in the center. America is always build it as cost efficient and boring as possible.

What is the name of this bird? I want to see their species in personal. Their shade looks like a shade of kiwi or mint green haha
I really have no idea, I just happened to stumble upon it. It is a slightly dark green though, like a leaf. Pretty small and constantly moving.
Oh. Wow. I understand why it would be hidden but still, the description paints it a really beautiful place.
Sometimes the best things are hidden from view. This was one of those times.
Beautiful. It may look prettier during springtime.
Ya, for sure the weather robbed a bit of the beauty, but it was still quite nice. Will check it out later this year to see the difference. Thanks.
What an awesome park that is so cool
Thanks for joining the Wednesday, its always fun for me to visit the walks from all around the world, getting a feel for communities where people live and what they see on their daily walks
Thanks Jay.
