Treasures and Surprises at the Simon Bolivar House in Old Havana [eng/esp]

Hello friends, today, like every Wednesday, I am pleased to join our friend @tattoodjay's challenge to share a very nice walk with you.

Havana holds hundreds of corners that tell stories, both Cuban and universal. On my most recent stroll through Old Havana, I decided to explore one of these gems: the beautiful colonial house at 156 Mercaderes Street, dedicated to the liberator of America, Simón Bolívar.

As soon as I crossed the threshold, I was greeted by a bronze bust of the national hero. But the first great surprise was the architecture itself. The house, in the Neoclassical style and built in 1817, is very beautiful. Its stone facade and the immense hardwood door are impressive, but the interior courtyard is also striking, a typical space of the era, surrounded by columns and arches that invite you to look up at the intense blue sky.

The rooms, distributed around this courtyard, display a collection dedicated to Venezuelan culture and history, with beautiful examples of ceramics and textiles. In several rooms, Bolívar's life is honored through numerous paintings, each depicting a different era. There are writings and battle scenes to illustrate the magnitude of his struggle. I was particularly moved by the space dedicated to Manuela Saenz, recognizing her crucial role as a companion in struggle and love, as inspiring as it was necessary.

Among all the works, one painting caught my eye for its beauty and uniqueness: a painting made with heavy oil on canvas by the Venezuelan artist Óscar José Aguilera Sojo. I was fascinated by the palette of brown tones he achieved, creating a result of unparalleled beauty.

For those who appreciate detail, there are two exquisite models: one of the Spanish ship San Ildefonso, crafted from wood, metal, and ivory; and the other of the Simón Bolívar training ship of the Bolivarian Navy. I recognized the latter immediately; I was fortunate enough to visit the actual ship when it docked in our port.

Another pleasant surprise was discovering that one of the rooms was functioning as a classroom, with children receiving a lesson. What a brilliant way to connect new generations with history!

However, there is a treasure that, for me, shines with its own light. In one of the corners, protected by a wooden frame that allows it to be admired up close, is a spectacular stained-glass window by the Cuban artist Mariano Rodríguez, created in 1987. It is a piece of incalculable artistic value and is carefully preserved.

At first, I wondered: what is this Cuban work doing here? The answer lies in its title: "History of America." Observing it from left to right, we see different moments in history, beginning with the discovery by Christopher Columbus. We can also appreciate the figure of Bolívar, among other personalities. It is, without a doubt, a jewel within a jewel.

In short, this museum is a treasure trove of surprises: colonial architecture that is art in itself, handcrafted works, paintings steeped in history, and that masterful stained-glass window that narrates our past with light and color. A visit that will be unforgettable.

Tesoros y sorpresas en la Casa Simón Bolívar de La Habana Vieja
Hola amigos, hoy como cada miércoles me complace unirme al reto de nuestro amigo @tattoodjay para compartirles un paseo muy bonito.
La Habana guarda cientos de rincones que narran historias, tanto cubanas como universales. En mi paseo más reciente por la Habana Vieja, decidí adentrarme en una de esas joyas: la bella casa colonial de la calle Mercaderes 156, dedicada al libertador de América, Simón Bolívar.
Nada más cruzar el umbral, me recibió un busto en bronce del prócer. Pero la primera gran sorpresa fue la arquitectura en sí. La casa, de estilo neoclásico y construida en 1817 es muy hermosa. Su fachada de piedra y la inmensa puerta de madera noble son impresionantes, pero también es sorprendente el patio interior, un espacio típico de la época, rodeado de columnas y arcos que invitan a alzar la vista hacia el cielo azul intenso.
Las habitaciones, distribuidas alrededor de este patio, exponen una colección dedicada a la cultura y la historia venezolana, con hermosas muestras de cerámica y tejidos.
En varios salones se hace homenaje a la vida de Bolívar, a través de múltiples pinturas, cada una retratando una época distinta. Hay escritos y cuadros de batallas, para mostrarnos la magnitud de su lucha. Me conmovió especialmente el espacio dedicado a Manuela Sáenz, reconociendo su papel crucial como compañera de lucha y amor, tan inspirador como necesario.
Entre todas las obras, un cuadro me llamó la atención por su belleza y su peculiaridad: una pintura hecha con petróleo pesado sobre lienzo del artista venezolano Óscar José Aguilera Sojo. Me fascinó la paleta de tonos marrones que logró para crear un resultado de una belleza sinigual.
Para los amantes de los detalles, hay dos maquetas exquisitas: la del navío español San Ildefonso, elaborada con madera, metal y marfil; y la del buque escuela Simón Bolívar de la Armada Bolivariana. Esta última la reconocí de inmediato, tuve la suerte de visitar el barco real cuando atracó en nuestro puerto.
Otra sorpresa grata fue descubrir que una de las salas funcionaba como un aula, con niños recibiendo una clase. ¡Qué forma brillante de vincular a las nuevas generaciones con la historia!
Sin embargo, hay un tesoro que, para mí, brilla con luz propia. En uno de los rincones, protegido por un marco de madera que permite admirarlo de cerca, se encuentra un vitral espectacular del artista cubano Mariano Rodríguez, realizado en 1987. Es una pieza de valor artístico incalculable y está conservada con esmero. Al principio, me pregunté: ¿qué hace esta obra cubana aquí? La respuesta está en su título: "Historia de América". Observándolo de izquierda a derecha, vemos diferentes momentos de la historia comenzando por el descubrimiento por Cristóbal Colón, también podemos apreciar la figura de Bolívar, entre otras personalidades. Es, sin duda, una joya dentro de otra joya.
En resumen, este museo es una caja de sorpresas: una arquitectura colonial que es arte en sí misma, obras de artesanía, pinturas con historia y ese vitral magistral que narra nuestro pasado con luz y color. Una visita que se hace inolvidable.
