#Wednesday Walk - From Being Disappointed to Discovering a Great Walking Trail.

(Edited)

This post is for the #wednesdaywalk challenge and the #makemesmile challenge collaboration. This collaboration initially took place once a month, but due to its popularity, @tattoodjay (of the #wednesdaywalk) and @elizacheng (of #makemesmile) decided to make it a weekly thing.

If you want to know more about the rules, visit this week's post by @tattoodjay where you will find all the rules at the bottom of his post after you've enjoyed his beautiful photos from his walk.

This last weekend I wanted to see if we could get access to a hiking trail that we walked back in 2019.

Our oldest daughter showed it to us in August back in 2019. It's on the northern side of Umhlanga Rocks in the Umhlanga Rocks Nature Reserve.

Leaving the parking area, next to a holiday resort, the route went through the nature reserve, through the bush, then crossing over a piece of wetland, until you eventually arrive on the beach, north of Umhlanga Rocks.

From there, you can either return via the same route or have a walk down the beach going down south until you can go onto the walkway just above the beach at the northern parts of Umhlanga Rocks. From this walkway, there are several walkways, passing between the various holiday resorts, and going back up to the main road again. From there you can then follow the main road back to the car park again at the Breakers Resort.

Sadly, in July of 2021, we had huge unrest/looting here in South Africa (warning: if you are a sensitive person, the BBC-news article in this link contains disturbing images of violence and a video of a mother who is forced to throw her baby into the crowd below after their building has been set on fire). You can also read more about the looting on Wikipedia.

During the looting, the UPL Chemical Warehouse was set on fire which caused serious chemical spillage, and contamination of the wetland and rivers in the surrounding area.

After things calmed down and started returning to normal, we wanted to do the same hiking trail I mentioned above, but the Umhlanga Nature reserve was closed due to the contamination caused by the chemical spill during the looting.

Just more than a year later, I wanted to see if we could get access to this area again by now.

DSC_3806.jpg

But it is still closed.

DSC_3804.jpg

DSC_3805.jpg

It was a cool, cloudy day, as can be seen in the next photo.

Not being able to get access to the area, I took this photo through the fence, showing the area where the hiking trail is located.

DSC_3808.jpg

Not being able to enter the nature reserve, we decided to walk down the road along the various holiday resorts, until we could find a walkway that would take us down to the beach.

We didn't have to walk too far to get to the first walkway.

This is looking down towards the beach.

DSC_3810.jpg

Walking down this walkway, we came across this neat little garden on the side of one of the holiday resorts at the side entrance.

DSC_3812.jpg

Just below these resorts, we found this walkway. We decided to first go down and spend some time at the beach before coming back to see where this would lead to...

DSC_3823.jpg

Why should monkeys go through all the trouble of moving through the bushes when they have beautiful walkways where they can move around effortlessly...?

DSC_3824.jpg

Standing on the northern side, looking down south down the side of Umhlanga Rocks.

Way back, in the distance (the speck on the horizon in the center), you can see the light tower that I have shared in some of my previous posts. That is where the Umhlanga Rocks main beach is.

DSC_3832.jpg

Clearly, some vehicle has passed here earlier...

DSC_3834-6.jpg

We then decided to find out where that walkway would take us too behind the holiday resorts.

It took us to the back of the Breakers Resort, from where we had a beautiful view over the area, including the wetland, where I actually planned on walking on the hiking trail.

DSC_3858.jpg

It's not very clear, but if you look closely, you can see the little wooden "bridge" (just below the water that is visible) that would have taken us across the wetland and into the bushes on the righthand side. Entering the "bushy area" to the right in the photo would have been the last stretch before arriving on the beach.

DSC_3863.jpg

Then, to our right, we found another walkway that also led toward the ocean.

DSC_3876.jpg

At the end of this walkway, we were in for a pleasant surprise...

DSC_3879.jpg

The bottom end of the Umhlanga Nature Reserve, with a neat walking trail that is maintained by the Breakers Resort.

DSC_3880.jpg

A nice view of the trail, going up along the coastline, just above the beach.

DSC_3883.jpg

They took a great effort to not disturb nature while building this trail.

DSC_3884.jpg

Our first peak at the ocean while walking the trail.

DSC_3885.jpg

In the next few photos, you can get an idea of some peaks/views we had, looking out over the ocean with some ships waiting to enter Durban Harbor.

DSC_3888-2.jpg

DSC_3897.jpg

DSC_3909.jpg

And some typical views of the trail, looking ahead...

DSC_3892.jpg

DSC_3893.jpg

DSC_3894.jpg

DSC_3895-2.jpg

Along the way, we came across the original hiking trail that we were planning on walking for the day. It is clear that this walking trail has replaced it and it seems that the hiking trail is something of the past. A huge difference between the original "hiking trail" versus the newly built "walking trail"...lol.

DSC_3902.jpg

Zooming in a bit on the old hiking trail...

DSC_3901.jpg

I will share the "end destination" of the walking trail we followed in my post on Friday.

So for today, that's all folks.

Our outing started with somewhat of a disappointment, finding that we still cannot get access to the nature reserve and the hiking trail as planned.

But it ended on a good note with discovering this new walking trail leading through the bottom part of the nature reserve.

It was a nice surprise and a very pleasant walk.

Thank you for reading my post! I do appreciate it!

Nice to see the area is maintained with new paths raised above the ground now preserving the soil from erosion.

Enjoyed the walk with you some lovely patches of natural beauty still to be found.

Hi, @joanstewart! Yes, we were thrilled to see the new paths and how well it's maintained and especially the effort that is going into preserving the soil, as you say, and nature in its entirety.

I'm glad you enjoyed the walk with me!

Thank you for stopping by and have a wonderful day👍!

Lifted boardwalks definitely make a huge difference to the plant life not being trampled. Towns all along the coast are busy cleaning up, many trying to bring in creative ideas to save areas that have been destroyed.

Have a wonderful day.

!BEER cheers....

Yes, they do make a huge difference indeed! And I love the way they get built/installed without disturbing nature in any way.

Thank you, @joanstewart. You must have a wonderful day too!

A beautiful walk at the end. To bad the first one was still closed.
The beach views are beautiful… and the resorts are well taken care of.
So nice you found that path. It’s cool to see the cut out the wooden path around the tree to not destruct nature to much.
Thanks for sharing my friend @jacoalberts 😊👋🏻 Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Yes, we were disappointed at first. But I'm glad that we have found the new trail and how well it is being maintained.

We also found another little gem on the new trail as well (which I will share on Friday😉).

It's a refreshing walk indeed!

Thank you, @littlebee4, you must have a great Wednesday too👋😊👍!

I have been following world events including events going on there in South Africa some events very sad and shocking

A pity the path area you wanted to go to was closed, but still ended up a lovely walk with the bonus of finding the trail maintained by the resort

Thanks for joining Wednesday Walk :), I truly enjoy exploring the world virtually each Wednesday seeing walks from all around the globe and feeling I am there and experiencing it all myself, such as I did in your post just now :)

Yes, we have some bad stuff going on here. But going on these walks and taking photos helps me to look for positive things on purpose and focus on things and places that are still uplifting.

When you start paying attention to what is happening around you, you sometimes want to go nuts. You need to know what is happening around you though, but you also need something positive.

Yes, sadly the original trail was closed, but as you say, we ended up on a lovely walk👍

Indeed all the craziness there and around the world can drive us nuts, we need to break away from all the bad and soak in the beauty around us from time to time to keep our sanity

First off, I always look forward to your weekly walking adventures. It's super cool to be seeing and learning about new places from your end of the planet. So sad about the nature reserve. I hope that authorities can bring it back to life. Lastly, the new walking trail you found is such a gem. I'm glad your adventure turned out well. Yay! An advance happy weekend..

That is terribly sad! I wasn't even aware of the chemical spill. I am not sure I even want to think about the damage that caused to the wetland area in particular. It is rather heartbreaking in all honesty.

I am glad that you did at least find a wonderful walking trail. There is a clear difference between that and the hiking trail for sure. The walking trail seems like it will be much kinder to my buggered knee, haha.

@zakludick, @loadreaper we should consider showing off our country in our SA community a little? What do you guys think? Not that I have much to show off nature-wise, as I live in a very urban area and do not have any ocean views 😥

@jacoalberts I really like that one photo where you framed the ship through the trees. Great shot!

I think the #wednesdaywalk idea is a fabulous one! Though I am a little scared to do that alone out where I live.

ah no is it a bit of a dangers area 😞 sorry to hear

It's Gauteng, so yeah, of course there are worse areas, but I am disinclined to make myself an easy target!

It's such a pity that we must be so limited because of the danger involved...

The #wednesdaywalk gives you a lot of scops though. If you can just get out...that's the main idea.

Do you have a garden or are you living in a flat/apartment building?

I do live in a flat, but it's on the same property as a house and we have a lovely garden. I go out there quite often, usually to check on my veggie patch, hehe

0

That's awesome! What if you maybe start taking some photos in your garden and share the progress you make in your veggie patch? That's only if you feel comfortable with that...but it would be a start.

I have been doing just that! It is actually pretty exciting to look back on the previous post's photos and see how much growth has happened. My spinach is doing so well, growing like crazy. I may have to start harvesting some soon.

That's awesome! So, reading your comment, I think it can actually serve a dual purpose!

You can use this as a journal to monitor your own progress while earning some income from doing so at the same time...😊👍!

That is indeed the plan! I'll actually need to start harvesting some of the spinach soon! 😁

Yes, the chemical spill caused huge damage. It's heartbreaking.

But as you saw, we discovered the new walking trail now. I get the impression it will replace the old hiking trail on a permanent basis. And yes, it is much kinder on your body than the old hiking trail. I am also suffering from old knee and hip injuries and I already had to be very careful the last time we did the hiking trail. I was hoping for the best this weekend, but in all honesty, finding the new walking trail was a pleasant experience. You can still enjoy the same scenery and experience but it definitely is much kinder to the body...lol!

Yes, showing off our country is an awesome idea! Even though you don't have much to show off nature-wise, just show us what you can...

I'm glad you liked the photo with the ship being framed by the trees. Thank you for that feedback, it means a lot to me and I appreciate it, @pixelhuntersam👍!

@jacoalberts have you joined the South African community? It's just started, @zakludick set it up. I suppose I can show off some urban spots too, though I would need to convince a friend or two to tag along. I don't like it when I have to take photos and there isn't someone on lookout duty. I tend to get very absorbed in the photo-taking which leaves my butt vulnerable. I don't want 'undesirables' to think I am an easy target then. (I most certainly am not, but blood is tedious to get out of clothing, haha)

I am on the list that @zakludick has created yes. I need to pay a visit to his profile again!

I totally get what you say that you need to get someone to tag along, @pixelhuntersam. I like your thinking and I wish more people would be so responsible. I've been drilling that into both our daughters since they were little too! Blood is tedious to get out of clothing indeed...unfortunately, I have personal experience to testify to that...

I hope you can find someone to join you!

My husband is always looking out for me, though, walking is not really his thing and he can get grumpy when I drag him all over 😂 I have had a few close calls, but came away without much incident. They tend to get a bit startled when this tiny woman doesn't just roll over and comply, and that resulted in them bolting.

Yes, going for walks is not always everybody's favorite activity...and getting forced into doing something you don't really enjoy would make anybody grumpy...😊.

That's good to hear...lol! Don't let them intimidate you and even if you do get nervous, do not show your fear! Go, girl! Show them what you're made of...lol! Just don't get reckless! But I do get the impression that you won't take unnecessary risks...😊👍!

They didn't have any weapons, opportunists. It was when I lived in Polokwane. I used to walk most places there as we lived close to town and I didn't have a car. That isn't something I would do now. Cheers! Hope you had a wonderful day!

I'm glad to hear that no serious harm has come to you and that they didn't have any weapons. But still, it's not nice to find yourself in those situations.

You can't be too careful today. In February of 2019, we got attacked inside our house at 03h00 in the morning. By the grace of God, I was able to fight them off, but I still got stabbed with a knife and the blade broke off, sticking out of my face. It went into my lower lip and exited below my jaw... I had to have it surgically removed.

Fortunately, no physical harm was done to my wife though, as they couldn't get to her.

My day was busy so far, but good, thank you! I hope you have a wonderful day too👍!

Yikeees! That sounds terrible! I am glad you are both okay though. We had to up the security around our place quite a bit. They broke in here as well, but nobody was home as it was in the morning on a Friday. Hubby and I were at work, and mom-in-law had thankfully gone shopping. We found out later it was a gang that had hit several houses in the area, and if they found people at home, would rough them up and tie them up while they went about their looting. Divine intervention. Though I am still annoyed about the fact that they stole not only my PC and camera but found my external hardrive as well. I lost all my photos. 😭

There was also the incident where they tried to hijack my mom-in-law at gunpoint in the driveway. The didn't bargain on my husband being home. When they saw him they were spooked and fled. Since then we have upgraded our security quite a bit. Full alarm system, panic buttons, armed response, electric fence, security cameras.

At least I feel justified having my weapon stashes around the home though. 😅 But my husband is probably my biggest and most dangerous weapon. Woe to the poor sod who threatens his wife. He gets upset enough if someone is rude or disrespectful to me. 🤣

Still, it's terrible that you have to live on high alert even in your own home.

I have often joked though, that if a zombie apocalypse broke out in SA, many homes would essentially be miniature fortresses.

Wow! That was Divine intervention indeed with all of you being away from home during that break-in! Just so sad and frustrating about the damage and the loss of your PC, camera, and hard drive, losing all your photos.

That is what frustrates the living daylight out of me...You work for what you have, you mind your own business...yet these...imbeciles...(I can't really find a word to describe these...things), but they just come into your life and think they can help themselves to your stuff...

And as if that's not enough, they would not only harm you but even kill you without any reason, except for the fact that you have what they want...

I am so grateful to hear your husband was at home when they tried to hijack your mom-in-law...and that the cowardly trash that they are got spooked and fled!

I shouldn't be talking about this...I get so angry and worked up about it... My wife keeps telling me I should calm down. So, sorry about all the ranting...but wow, sometimes it just comes out...

That's a good thing that you have upgraded your security!

And weapon stashes around the house...good for you! We have the same here! And good for your husband for protecting you in the way that he does. That's awesome and that's how I believe a real man should be!!

Still, it's terrible that you have to live on high alert even in your own home.

I agree with you 110%!!

I have often joked though, that if a zombie apocalypse broke out in SA, many homes would essentially be miniature fortresses.

I love this🤣🤣🤣!!! Well said, @pixelhuntersam👍!
