Wednesday Walk challenge : Parc Lafontaine (Montreal)
This is the first time I've been out especially for the WednesdayWalk. Today I've decided to take you on a tour of Montreal's Parc Lafontaine. With winter setting in, there aren't many leaves left on the trees, but it's still nice to take a walk in this park. I hope that WednesdayWalk will become one of my habits..
Here's a map of my day's walk in the Parc Lafontaine. I started at rue Saint-Hubert, then rue Roy, before arriving at the park and leaving via rue Duluth. For the record, this park was an old farm that was transformed into a military training ground until the 1890s. Then, in 1900, the City of Montreal decided to create a park here, and dug two ponds. Since then, the park has been the delight of the surrounding neighborhoods.

My walk starts with a "green alley" on rue Saint-Hubert with its bookbox. One of my favorite concepts, it's really quite simple: you can drop off books you've read or pick up new ones. There are some really interesting things. Once I've read the book, hop back in the box. Do you have a similar concept in your town?
It's really interesting to see these "green alley" where the landscaping has been designed to improve the daily lives of the inhabitants, but also of the animals, even insects, with little houses for them.
Really cool insect shelters. I wonder if they're really used. I didn't see anyone but it was cold, almost 0°C.
We're on rue Roy heading towards Parc Lafontaine. I don't know what this building was originally, but it's now been turned into housing. It's really beautiful, especially with its wooden door, and a cyclist was just leaving as I passed. But I didn't have time to see inside. I'm too curious 😀.
I love this stone architecture.
We finally arrive at Parc Lafontaine, greeted by this magnificent tree.
At the edge of the pond whose water has been drained a little for the coming winter but before the frost it will have an addition of water to transform the whole pond into a free skating rink during the winter. Always cool to go skating there.
But for now, the ducks are still enjoying the water.
The central pavilion, built in 1951, houses a restaurant called Robin des Bois, perfect for a break and a coffee. In front, there's a large whale that children love. I hope to be able to take a better photo next time, because it's really nice. Too many kids were playing around, in this photo 🔽, two are hiding behind it.

Right next door is the Théâtre de Verdure, an pen-air theater whose restoration was completed this summer. It's a really fine achievement, the old building (1956_ was really damaged because without maintenance and with Quebec winters, materials deteriorate quickly. I hope this one will be better maintained.
A small bridge separates the two basins with a waterfall (top basin in the first photo of the post). But at this time of year, the lake is no longer fed.
I end my walk with these magnificent trees that withstood last spring's ice storm. Fortunately, many trees broke under the weight of the frost. Fortunately, some of them survived.
I leave Parc Lafontaine on Rue Duluth with this building built in 1906. The year of construction can be seen on the yellow roof, a truly beautiful piece of architecture. I hope you enjoyed the walk. It's always good to get some fresh air after a day of working in front of a computer screen.
Have a nice day and enjoy...

Nice #wednesdaywalk through a nice urban park. When I was in college I lived near Forest Park in St Louis. Its a large urban park with alot of history. Great to have some green space.
Always fun to have a park close to home especially when you live in a city.
Enjoy your Thursday
What a novelty about the house of books, I've never seen that before. It's a nice walk. In my country in the winter almost everything stays the same, the trees stay green and don't shed their leaves. I would like to see snow someday.
We have great temperature differences in Montreal, with 4 quite distinct seasons, and that's what I like: the same place but completely different depending on the season. For example, in summer people come here to sunbathe, and in winter it's ice-skating.
Have a great day.

This is the first time I've seen insect shelters...we often have bird feeders and houses hung up, but the care of insects is amazing to me! What kind of insects are hiding in these shelters?
I was curious too to see what insects were taking refuge inside. But it's already too cold in Montreal, so I didn't see anything.
Have a lovely day.
I have never heard or seen a shelter for insects in my life. This is my first time. I’m glad you had a nice walk
Always good to have some fresh air after a day in front of computer screen.
Enjoy your day.
