Wednesday Walk challenge : Parc Jean Drapeau (Montreal)
This is my third participation in the WednesdayWalk, this time it's a short walk on Sainte-Hélène Island at Parc Jean Drapeau, just on the other side of the Saint-Laurent from downtown Montreal. The last weekend was perfect for enjoying the fall colors with a superb blue sky and a very pleasant temperature (almost 20°C).
The main attraction of this park is the sculpture Three Discs by Alexander Calder with behind a view of the skyline of Montreal. But we'll come back to that later. To get an idea, here is a map to locate the Parc Jean Drapeau made up of 2 islands: Sainte Hélène Island and Notre Dame Island (there we compete for the Montreal Formula 1 grand prix). Today I only walked around Saint Helena.

After crossing the Jacques Cartier Bridge, we arrived in the 3rd largest park in Montreal. The trees are magnificent with their fall colors, from red to green. A few picnic tables are still present, in summer it's a popular place to enjoy nature very close to Montreal, you can even take the metro to get there.
Right next to the parking lot is the Biosphere, the former United States pavilion during the 1967 Universal Exhibition which is now the Environment Museum. I haven't visited it yet, I'll really have to go take a look. Still impressive, this dome. Behind, there is the bridge to access Notre Dame Island. But we're going the other way, maybe next time 😀.
Here is the Jean Drapeau metro station for direct access to the Park and all its attractions: the Biosphere, the La Ronde amusement park, the Casino... And continuing, we arrive at the famous sculpture of Alexandre Calder, the famous American sculptor who created Three Discs in 1967 .
The sculpture also called the Man was created especially for the 1967 Universal Exhibition for the reception area. It is the largest public work of art in Montreal at almost 22 meters high. It represents progress and human ingenuity. And for the record, it's Calder's only unpainted "stabile".
After passing the sculpture, we find ourselves on the banks of the St. Lawrence River with a direct view of downtown Montreal and the Old Port, a tourist district with its Ferris wheel. At the far end, we can see Mount Royal (biggest parc of the city) with all its orange trees.
On the way back to the parking lot, we come across other works of art including this large sculpture, the Phare du Cosmos, also made for the 1967 Exhibition by Yves Trudeau, a Quebec sculptor (1920- 2017) not to be confused with one of the founding members of the Hells Angels in Montreal 😀. Originally this lighthouse was mechanized and produced sounds. Too bad it doesn't work anymore. The Quebec winter is merciless.
Here is the big square 🔼 where the Osheaga music festival takes place during the summer. There is room to install several music stages. Very popular, many tourists come to town to attend. Another open area 🔽 for another musical scene with the sculpture The Imaginary City in the background.
Back to the parking lot. The trees are really magnificent with these colors, really from red to green. It's really a very pleasant walk to do, accessible to all with a magnificent view of the city.
And on the ground a superb carpet of leaves. I hope you enjoyed the ride.
And to finish my favorite leaf 😀. Have a great day everyone and enjoy...
Et pour terminer ma feuille préférée 😀 . Bonne journée à tous et profitez...

And every post has their own map too!
Want to have your post on the map too?
Thanks always good to be on the map 😀
The park looks beautiful with those fall colors. And it seems like a very nice area to take a walk. It´s curious that the big sculpture called The Man is Calder's only unpainted work. Here in Caracas in the University City there are a few works of art by Calder but the most impressive is inside the University auditorium.
Indeed, very nice park to walk around and have a beautiful view of the Montreal skyline.
As for Calder, I'm curious if this statement "unpainted" is true...I have my doubts 🤔. In Caracas, are they painted ?
Have a lovely day.
In Caracas some of his works are mobile, but the most important is Calder's Clouds from the Aula Magna of the Central University which are very colorful.
Have a great day:)
Ah there are mobile in Caracas... I know in Paris the stabile is red.
Have a great day too.
Awesome pictures. You caught the colors of fall!!!
Always beautiful photos at this time of year even if the photographer isn't great 😅
Enjoy your day.

Lucky you... Can we know the new destination or is it a surprise? 😀
Have a wonderful day.
I’m going way up north 😉 even further north than Scotland. For now still a little surprise.

I saw the work of Alexander Calder there and it was really amazing
He did a great job
His sculpture is truly impressive and ideally placed although I wouldn't like to be in his place in winter, with the cold and the wind 🌬 The sculpture was made to withstand winds of 200 km/h 😲
Have a lovely day
such beautiful fall colors and I love that sculpture, we had temps like that the other day this morning it was below freezing point not good for me to go walking
Thanks for joining the Wednesday walk :)
Yep the same here in Montreal, it's really cold in the mornings now... Winter is setting in.
Always a pleasure to participate in WednesdayWalk, I hope to do it more often 🤞
Have a great day.
🙂🙂👍
Happy #wednesdaywalk Looks like a nice urban escape. I'm picturing the sculpture and biosphere with a coating of snow 😅 Good to get some nice fall shots in while you still can 🙂
Yes, we must take advantage of the beautiful autumn days... although it's over, the snow is already here 😢 but hey that doesn't stop you from going out and taking beautiful photos.
Enjoy your day
