Wednesday Walk : Avenue Morgan, Montreal

For this WednesdayWalk hosted by @tattoodjay, I'd like to take you on a stroll down Morgan Avenue in Montreal's Hochelaga Maisoneuve district. It was the main street of the former Cité-De-Maisonneuve. The architecture of the various buildings along it is really interesting, coming from the American civic beautification movement called City Beautiful. I'll take you on a tour on this street to see all these buildings...

L'Ancienne Cité-De-Maisonneuve is located in the Hochelaga Maisonneuve district of Montreal. The “interesting” buildings are located on Avenue Morgan between Marché Maisonneuve and Parc Morgan.

We start this #WednesdayWalk at Gennevilliers-Laliberté square, which stands in front of the former Marché Maisonneuve. At its center is a beautiful bronze fountain designed by Alfred Laliberté. But of course, when I passed by, it was being repaired. Fortunately, there's a seagull perched on the farmer's head.

At the end of this square, we come upon the Marché Maisonneuve, one of the last remaining buildings of the town of Maisonneuve, founded in 1883 by French-Canadian businessmen. Their aim was to create a prosperous town, which it quickly became thanks to the shoes industry. By 1910, it was the 5th-largest industrial city in Canada.

But construction of the market, then the fire station and the Morgan baths, led to huge debts for the town, against the backdrop of the First World War. In 1918, the town was annexed by Montreal. For more information, visit patrimoine-culturel.gouv.qc.ca, only in French.

Now the Marché Maisonneuve has changed vocation, hosting several cultural and social organizations. You can see a tag done by Rires En Canne. All around the building are benches and this ping pong table. I like the net... A new, more modern market has been built next door.

Bain Morgan

Bain Morgan

On Morgan Avenue, here's another building that has weakened the city's finances. This is the Morgan Bath, containing a swimming pool and a public gymnasium. Its architecture is influenced, as I said in my introduction, by the City Beautiful movement, very fine arts movement. I'm not very happy with the photos, but the sun was quietly rising just behind the building, not easy to take a picture of. I'll be back one autumn day in the evening. The building deserves it 😀.

Bain Morgan

The entrance is decorated with this sculpture Les Petits Baigneurs (The Little Bathers) by Alfred Laliberté, the same sculptor as the farmer. It has to be said that he was very productive in Quebec, creating over a hundred sculptures throughout his career.

Avenue Morgan

Here you can see Morgan Avenue with Marché Maisonneuve in the background. I think it's one of the few avenues in Montreal with a grassy median in the middle. It's very airy and green, with large trees lining the sidewalks.

At the end of Morgan Avenue, on rue Sainte-Catherine, we find one of Montreal's cultural institutions, the Théatre Denise Pelletier. It wasn't built at the same time as the other buildings. It dates from 1930 and was originally a cinema. It wasn't until 1976 that it was transformed into a theater. And in 1997, it was named after Denise Pelletier, Quebec television actress (1925-1976).

I hope you enjoyed this stroll along Avenue Morgan in Montreal. I'm thinking of making another visit with the leaves on the trees decked out in their autumn colors and in the evening to get a better shot of the Bain Morgan. Happy #WednesdayWalk to all.

That Montreal walk along Avenue Morgan looks absolutely charming—lush greenery, peaceful vibes, and a perfect way to connect with the city at a relaxed pace. Love a midweek stroll like that! 🚶‍♂️

Yes, it's a part of Montreal that I don't know very well, but it's worth visiting, especially on market day. There must be some good things to eat there 😀

I love cities that combine the ancient with the modern, that take care of the green areas and are full of sculptures with real meanings. Greetings

The architecture is interesting, but it is mainly the layout of the neighborhood that gives it its charm. It is quite unique in Montreal in terms of design.
Thanks for your support. Enjoy this beautiful day

Yep beautiful avenue with this architecture. Too bad it was the morning, I didn't get to try some of the market's specialties after my walk... maybe next time.

Well, sometimes we can't have everything😄 even it was in the morning, you can see that these buildings are grand. Never been to Canada, but in Norway travel magazines actually recommend Canada, if the US is out of the question...as it is for many people here..

It's rare that you can have it all.
Canada is a beautiful country to visit, but the distances between the various attractions are quite large. It's not Europe 😀

Hehe....Canada is huge! One has to make choices, spend lot of time on planes or be prepared to spend months😄

Yep, this central median adds a touch of greenery to the whole. This kind of street is rare in Montreal, and the only one of its kind that I know of.
