Wednesday Walk, STOP and drop!

(Edited)

A few weeks ago, I mentioned that we got a ton of snow all at once. We have beautiful, massive mountains in our neck of the woods - the Sierra Nevadas! Truly beautiful when you see them snow-capped. See those peaks in the distance!?

It's "thirst-quenching" when all that snow melts and runs down the mountain, flooding the rivers and creeks, satiating all our parched land! Everything turns bright green for a bit! Hard to believe how quickly it can turn back into golden browns and yellows!

However, once in a a while, it's just too much simultaneously. The snowmelt gushes and overflows the banks and doesn't just flood the rivers but floods all the roads and land nearby! In January this year, it was probably the worst anyone had ever seen in 25 years or more! My daughter was out driving with her fiance in the rain, and at the LAST second, they saw something startling : the ROAD was missing! Just - gone! They couldn't believe their eyes, but thankfully they did see it in time!

My son and I have really been missing one another! With him volunteering his time for a friend after work, and with me being out of the country for a bit - we just hadn't seen each other in a while! So he suggested we go for a walk! And I couldn't have been happier!!! We had only seen the road from the pictures the night that my daughter drove - so we went on an adventure to see it with our own eyes.

As you can see here, the creek passes directly underneath the road well, what WAS the road.

Come walk with us, and see what we saw!

From a distance, it really just looks like a small separation in the road. Maybe easily fixed? It's very difficult to judge how much devastation is there! Of course, we continued closer!

A bit closer, and what do you think? It's starting to look more serious now. I'm not sure what is so magnetic about scenes like this, but they really do draw you in, don't they? I am so in awe of the power of nature! To think that rushing water took out this road - wow! Let's get closer and really get a better view!

Ok, maybe your eyes went immediately to the road being washed away, but mine went right to my boy! hehe I guess that shows that I really have been missing him!!! But - let's take a look back at the MISSING ROAD! LOL

When I look at this picture, it STILL doesn't convey the magnitude of the destruction. Even with Mikey standing there for perspective, the camera is not picking up what we are actually seeing. I tried to get an even BETTER shot!

I think being able to see the creek below now helps your eyes to see just how powerful that water had to be to take out this entire road! And when you look at how small the road on the other side appears compared to the side we are standing on - you can judge the distance better on the photo! It's really very remarkable!!

And for the final shot, we got right up to the edge. You can see the crack in the road there! From our perspective at first, it seemed like that edge might just break off and fall. As we creeped closer to the edge we could see that the road was laying on top of solid ground beneath. No overhang! So I was safely able to take this next shot.

From here, you can see where the creek comes from before the place where it took out the road. The water has receded significantly but there is still a constant flow. Even though we now have only ONE way off the mountain, instead of two, I think seeing this is actually very beautiful.

Thankfully no one was hurt and no private property was damaged! It's going to take a while before the county even tries to fix this, I think!!! So it will be a bit of a nuisance to not have this road! I loved taking this way for a scenic route. I always bring visitors to the top of this mountain for walks! It only took 3 minutes to get there. The round-about way to get there now would take almost 20!

Even with all that, I love seeing the handiwork of nature in all its glory!

But, hopefully the county will fix this road soon too! hahahahaha

Thanks for coming on the walk with me and Mikey!!!

Water is so powerful, as the road damage clearly shows. I love seeing the mountain meadows so lush and green. A beautiful walk!

It is so special when it's green and all the poppies and lupine pop out!!! it turns into a completely different feel!

I so love our mountain!!!

it's rural and there are inconveniences (like the fact that the road there won't get fixed any time soon!! lol) but all the blessings more than make up for it!!!! hehehe

morning Melinda!!! ❤️

The snow-capped mountain is indeed beautiful but I didn't know that It could be as destructive as that. Good thing your daughter the broken road in time!

I'm wondering, is the flowing water as cold as ice or it turns warm as they pass on the ground?

yes - actually her fiance saw the broken road! She said she wasn't sure if she would have seen it in time! oh gosh! my heart dropped at the sound of that!

and the water is ICY cold! heheheh sometimes it freezes over - but not when its rushing fast! hehehehe

in the winter - we have a lot of cold...
i'll show you a picture of what is happening right now in our California mountains! hehehe

I was amazed seeing that peak with ice, oh it's really real I haven't seen them in person ever since as Philippines don't have snow.

I felt sad seeing that damage road, being damaged by flood. Hopefully it can be repaired very soon because for sure many are using that road.

we are getting snow righ tnow.. hehehe it is all frosted in sugar snow!

you can look above in the comment section to see the picture I added hehehe but i'll probably have more pictures that are MORE snow as the week goes on hehehe

don't fee too sad about the road :) we will be ok withthe other road.

and no - not too many use it. I think that's why it will take a long time to fix it hahaha
because they will see no immediate need. and - we will just learn to adjust!

thank you for coming to visit @jenthoughts!! :)

WOW the lush green views you start with are so beautiful

and then you highlight the power of nature with the water taking out the road

MY family back in NZ are experiencing that after a Cyclone Hit the area they live it so much devastation still over 200o people missing, bridges washed away closing off access to some towns,
Luckily my family were safe and didnt suffer any flooding but had no power for a week and a half and seeing all the devastation and houses destroyed in the area is shocking

isn't that green so hypnotizing, weretwin???? i just want to roll around in it like a child hehehehe

cyclone!!! oh - those scare me so bad!!!

its like something chasing you! earthquakes are scary too - but here, they're usually mild. We actually had some for a while about 2 years ago - but now it's all stopped. we haven't felt anything in about 2 years!

but the cyclones - oh my gosh - they come from the heavens with a fury!!!! and they are just so terrifying!!! really so much power in nature when it unleashes - i'm so sorry that your family is going through this and I'm so so glad they're safe!!!

praying over that area right this second!

LOL its been a long time since I rolled in the grass and it makes me asky myself why havent I maybe this summer i will to cold to do it now

I grew up down under in NZ as you know and we have so many earthquakes I got used to them and they dont bother me at all, but a bad one would of course be so terryfying to live through

That was definitely a powerful flood :) ... I doubt you'll see anything like that again around there. They'll probably do some extra digging to allow for more water to safely flow under the road.

See a 3 minutes ways been faulty and one would have to go take round about which will take 20minutes will first stop one from always going out often and one will be hoping the road is fixed as soon as possible

What a great walk 🤗 together with your son. 😎
The devastating is a lot… especially with the force of water. The entire road is gone there. Wow.
Crazy.

The mountains and the fields are stunning though. Beautiful share.
Have an awesome Wednesday 👋🏻😊

DreemieWeemieSeeme now this reminds me of seeing sink hole open up in front of me in Florida!

Glad you got some quality time with your boy though, and that looks a beautiful place to walk. Am thinking pine tree smells now!

So that's where you guys went for your walk... hehe. And...confession time? My eyes went straight to your boy too! and that smile! I know how much you missed him 🤗 Say hi to Mikey for me... And it really is quite remarkable the power of water... that stream definitely raged to be able to take down that road. The tarmac on top looks surprisingly thin though. I guess it's how they do things these days. But back to the nature bit... that shot looking upriver is quite beautiful. If there weren't black bears, mountain lions, and rattlesnakes resident in the area, I would be game to explore the water line deep into the woods. Adventure time!!! Looks like you had fun...
ps: Three Rivers looks gorgeous in that pic.... so so green!!! I wanna come back... counting the days 💗

I love your first photo with the snow-capped mountains in the back! It's such a beautiful contrast.

Wow! I'm just grateful that your daughter and her fiance saw that the road was missing in time! It could have been a disaster if they haven't been so observant in that weather.

The power of nature is breathtaking!

Thank you for sharing these photos with us👍!

I can just imagine what must have gone through your mind! I agree with you...Thank God she is okay! Without being melodramatic or anything, yet, it's moments like this that make us realize that we cannot take it for granted that we will be around tomorrow! We should make the most of every moment we have with our loved ones...and live in the moment.

exactly! we are now under so much snow - and trees are falling left and right - powerlines down.. ughhh lol
but in times like these you really see how life is delicate!!!

Wow! With the power lines down, do you have lots of power outages?

Is this on the back road?
the one out the backside?

oh, wow... that is amazing, how powerful the water can be.

yep .. no more driving to the top of the mountain for walks.

well...no more quick drives!
we can still get there but have to take the long way around!!!! and back!

bummer, right??

no
it's only 75 minutes around.
well worht the time.

that mountain top is so stunning

well...maybe it will be back up by October?? I highly doubt it though lolol

things like this take time in the real world....for mountain world they take generations lololol

but who knows ..maybe it is a bit of a hazard for people to only have one way off the mountain!!! when fire season comes, if there is only one way, that can mean very real danger!!

0

i suspect for fireservices, at the least, they'll dump some boulders in, plus fill, to be able to at least move vehicles across. It may not be pretty, but they will figure a way

The last two days have been so unbelievably frustrating with power and internet - its like ... its just not even worth it to rehash it all. beyond beyond beyond frustrating.

and with the way things are up here LOL i don't think they'll do ANYTHING with that road anytime soon. rural living... sheesh.

we had a helicopter hovering over the ball park today - so my guess is they didn't land - but lifted someone up in a basket? i hope that they're ok...

IF they did a pickup. maybe surveying, to make sure the landing spot is good, in case.

ah... so i found out it was the power company... they were blowing the snow off the powerlines.

which is code for... "hey, the snow is already falling off the power lines because of the weight and the sun... so let's fire up da choppa and go on a joyride!"

yep.

i have it on video.

lolol no snow was moved during their trip. hahahahaha

That is absolutely incredible. Don't mess with Mother Nature!

hehehe she will spank you if you try!!! lolol

I don't like devastation when it's in the city... because it can kill so many!! and it always just looks like rubble until someone comes and cleans it up and restores.

but there is something magnificent about watching that same type of destruction in nature that I find enthralling!!

after a massive wildfire . just give it a season and you'll see nature use all of that ash as nutrients for an explosive growth!

after a flood .. same.. green and kush everywhere...and new paths created!

after an earthquake even . just wait to see how beautiful it can be ...when life returns to those newly exposed areas! and how the whole topography changes to reveal layers of the earth with stories to share from the past!

without civilization nearby.... nature's fingerprint is a thing of beauty!!! instead of destruction, it's just.... remodeling! hehehhee. I love it!!!
