Walking The Deserted Streets Of Sozopol
Wednesday unexpectedly fell upon me and reminded me that it was walking day. As lately my walks have been rather dull, with nothing special to show and obviously through the same places I decided that today I would tell you about another walk I did three months ago in the small resort of Sozopol, on the Black Sea, in Bulgaria.
To put the places on the map I have to make a short introduction and provide some information about the part of Eastern Europe where this walk takes place. And where my life travels, slowly, slowly, towards the known and unavoidable end!
A more general map of Europe, to see the position of these two countries, Bulgaria and Romania.
A detail with Romania and Bulgaria. I consider myself lucky that I live in the south of Romania and get to the Black Sea resorts of Bulgaria more easily. Romania also has part of the Black Sea coast and plenty of resorts but I prefer the Bulgarian part now.
The distance as the crow flies is 258 km (161 miles). Unfortunately, there is no such motorway, so the driving distance is 348 km, which takes more than five hours.
I hope these little hints and maps will help make it easier to understand my destination this end of the spring, where I did the walk I'm going to tell about now.
I've been looking forward to this summer so much that I went to the sea even before it started. The very nice and warm weather also contributed to this decision which turned out to be not very inspired.
Here another characteristic of most people comes into play. We, humans, are always unhappy. If it's crowded in a place we go on holiday we say it's not good, it would have been better if it wasn't, and if it's not crowded, as it was in my case, I still didn't like it because something I was used to on holiday was missing. Lots of people...
The Deserted Streets Of Sozopol
As I said, good weather when we arrived in Sozopol. I had been to Sozopol several times, five or six times, and every time I got there, after five tiring hours of driving, I would go for a walk through the narrow, sloping streets of the old town.
The old town is located on a small peninsula, with narrow, sloping streets that eventually lead to the sea. The photo is taken from the balcony of the hotel room and in the distance, you can see the peninsula and the old town!
A night view from the same place.
But let's get back to the first day's walk. At the small intersection where the old town begins we had our first (unpleasant) surprise when we noticed that the windows of a sandwich shop we loved had their shutters closed. I immediately realized that, in fact, the tourist season had not yet started and that explains the lack of tourists.
Tourists weren't completely missing, there were a few others, lost like us, on the deserted streets around.
The old town center is not so old because old houses have been restored and even modified to accommodate shops, bakeries, and banks. These streets are filled with people in season, now deserted. It's not a place I like very much, and because of those many shops...
For the first time, I walked these streets without being in a crowd of people. This is the payoff of this journey made too soon. The old town has turned into a very pleasant place to walk and relax.
However, I didn't like these central streets the most. I like the places where there are still the hundred-year-old houses, the wooden houses typical of this place. Fortunately, there are still some left. However, I didn't like these central streets the most. I like the places where there are still the hundred-year-old houses, the wooden houses typical of this place.
Sozopol is not a museum, it is a small town where people live even in the old center. Because of this many have renovated and modified the old stone and wooden houses into modern brick and concrete houses. We can't blame people for wanting more modern living conditions, even if this means losing traces of the past.
In fact, this gives charm to the old center. This amalgam of old houses, new houses, and even ancient tombs, like this one, next to people's houses and next to the alley we walk along.
Very old, thousands of years these ruins of the city of Apollonia. So-called Sozopol by the Greek colonists. It was a settlement of the ancient Greek colonists dedicated to the god Apollo...
That's how this ride was. Narrow streets, barely enough room for a car to pass. Houses very close together, older houses and houses being renovated. All these streets, longer or shorter, reach the sea. We walked randomly and arrived at the harbor. A small port. A small town can only have a small port...
On the other side of the harbor is a no-entry zone. There are some strange buildings. I found out that there was once a Russian headquarters and a military port there. When Bulgaria joined the European Union the Russians were forced to leave but probably secret equipment remained and that's why access is forbidden.
The boats are very photogenic and I took a lot of photos during that ride. I put a few to illustrate.
That's how I took my first walk through Sozopol, on the sly, out of curiosity to see changes. Changes that I was expecting because I hadn't visited the place for five years.
Of course, things have changed, but most of all I have changed. I no longer feel that thrill of pleasure I had on my first trips here...
The causes can be multiple. Seeing the city before the season started was like seeing a very beautiful but not very young woman before she got dressed up. I saw a different face, with things I liked and things I didn't. But I think it's only natural that it should happen that way. I think the same can happen with any repeated trip, anywhere.
I'll say it again and again, I've found that my main activity lately is... walking. Like all of you, I love to walk, but only now I have realized that walking has become my main mode of relaxation. Slowly, slowly overtaking the other pleasures I still have.

Congratulations, your post has been added to Pinmapple! 🎉🥳🍍
Did you know you have your own profile map?
And every post has their own map too!
Want to have your post on the map too?
Thanks!
Bulgaria is a beautiful country. I like streets and alleys close to each other and the architecture of the buildings is better than cities. I can say that pure and calm nature increases human comfort.
Yes, Bulgaria is a beautiful country!
I like taking a boat ride, the sea or the coast is beautiful and calm. It is strange that the atmosphere is not crowded now. This is the time for gathering and holidays.
The walk was done in May, so it was not crowded.
I am not sure how but i have heard of that city before, but never been there or seen it from what I remember,
well worth the drive such an interesting city its good you were there before the peak tourist season and you could share us the views and details without to many people around
Thanks for joining Wednesday Walk :), I truly enjoy exploring the world virtually each Wednesday seeing walks from all around the globe and feeling I am there and experiencing it all myself, such as I did in your post just now :)
Yes, you've seen this city before because I posted this summer in #wednesdaywalk another walk done there.
I also appreciate it when it's not crowded but it's kind of unpleasant if you go in the off-season as you see a lot of places closed or in repair and preparation for the season.
Ohh yes of course that makes sense LOL
thats a good point i guess its really not the same in the off season
There are two different realities, in-season and out-of-season, of course.
In this month of year and in this time of day, it is rare to see peope or open shops in such touristic destinations.
Hope some day you will visit the northern, western and southern coastlines of Turkiye.
Thank you! I'm sure there are wonderful places to visit and maybe the future will allow that.
It looks like an interesting wee town - and I loved the wooden buildings !

You're welcome! 🤗
Wow, this place is such a pleasure to look at. All those old buildings and stuff 😃.
This thing you said:
It's really true! What happens is that when they are people we enjoy the good aspects and get annoyed at the bad aspects of having people. When there are no people we also enjoy the good aspects and get annoyed at the bad aspects of not having people 😂. So since both of them have good aspects we'll always miss those good aspects when it is absent.
That's right, what's missing is always better...
Haha😅
I once visited Sozopol, went there by bus for 1 day walk. It was ages, really ages ago. It was my first vacation abroad, 7 days in Pomorie. And I remember those stone and wooden houses, they impressed me, and narrow streets.
Thank you!
Wish you to enjoy your walks always ❤️
With pleasure! I also remember with pleasure the first holidays, even if they were more difficult than they are now (I mean transport, accommodation, etc...)
Thank you!
There are so many things I want to wish you but I think they can all be expressed in one word... Peace!
Even if we haven't communicated lately, I want to tell you that we are thinking a lot about you, about Ukrainians, we have news every day about what is happening.
So much I wish (of course, not as much as you do) to see the day, as soon as possible, when this misfortune is over. We want that with all our hearts!
You words are so touching... I am much less active on Hive, and I read posts of my friends but don't comment them, because... often I have the feeling that the words have to be squeezed out of me. Just no energy for any words. I know you feel me, and I feel your support and I'm so thankful for it!! 💙
When war is over, it will be the happiest, the greatest day for many Ukrainian generations. Even considering our losses.
I totally understand what you're saying, you're less active and it's normal to be so. I do the same, I read my friends' posts but very often I don't manage to comment. I want to tell you now that you write extremely well, it's a pleasure to read and I look forward to reading your travel blogs again!
With that, you've said everything that's important. The war and the suffering of the Ukrainians must end as soon as possible!
I really like reading about your experiences and discoveries while exploring Bulgarian Black Sea coast!
Sozopol is indeed an awesome sea town where I've been tens of times as there were years we've been camping nearby with the family.
It is an old establishment and indeed at the same time it changes constantly, driven mainly by the money of the tourists. I think some time ago was voted a law saying any reconstructions and new buildings in the old town much match the visual style of the old ones so slowly, the old town will return to its beautiful roots.
Also, I don't know if you've heard, there is a traditional one-week-long huge cultural festival happening each year in the beginning of September, called "Apollonia", that I highly recommend.
Concerts, exhibitions, theater plays, you name it... All arts being represented.
https://apollonia.bg/
Hmm, the site seems to be only in Bulgarian but I am sure, the online translators will do their work :)
Thank you! I caught this festival once, several years ago.
In September I think I'll go to Balchik for a few days, it's closer for me.
Sozopol is a quiet, beautiful town with an incredible history and will definitely have a great future.
Last we visited Balchik in May this year but I was a bit disappointed by the prices of accommodation, food and drinks along the sea shore. Too expensive. We will probably "scan" the sea shore in Northern Greece instead, at the same time.
You're right, I've also noticed that the prices are a bit high. I have a reservation in mid-September, $150 a room for three nights. More expensive than in Romania, I make the comparison not because in Romania it would be better but because it was more expensive than in Bulgaria, so far. Unjustified, by the way, because in Bulgaria it is better or, perhaps, more to my taste.
We still wanted to go to the north of Greece, for three years we have been trying to return to Thassos but we can't make it. All sorts of problems with life, family, money...
Yes, true...
What I love about Greece is that their shores will never be covered by concrete and glass as it happened already in Bulgaria. Also, they know how to respect and protect their legacy.
Greece is unique and I hope it will not change! However, the enormous pressure of tourists may cause some changes, which can be seen there.
I think their economy pretty much depends on tourists :) Long summers and endless beaches :)
Plus lots of islands!
I guess hundreds, if not thousands. Probably a lifetime would not be enough to visit them all ;)
It certainly won't be enough!
This is a lovely place!
I had missed your posts and it was so nice seeing Magda walking as a kind of photo-trademark of your walking posts :)
Greetings!
Photo-trademark! Thank you, that's right, you're the first to call it that.
I, too, missed your posts... I was really worried and tried to find an explanation in the lack of time and focus on farm work. I recently saw in a post by Stefanos that you are preparing for your vacation. Very good news, I was very happy to hear that you are well and that you are going to be even better!
Writing about Sozopol, looking through the photos, I remembered that I saw your business in this Bulgarian town too. Very nice!
Our friend was looking for you but you weren't there!
Oh, I was out just for 5', can't believe that :))
Hopefully we are going to have some nice pictures and news from our trip soon, although we don't even know exactly where we are going, haha! We were supposed to leave one of these days, but it will probably be in the middle of September. My favorite time for trips. Oh, May as well! And June! Actually, all trips are welcome :)
Many years ago, in Thassos, at our favorite taverna where we ate every night. The gentleman serving us, actually one of the owners, when called by someone said he would be there in 5 minutes. Of course, he was much later. When I asked him why he was late, he said he wasn't late, he said he was arriving in "5 Greek minutes"! Then I understood how time flows in Greece. I loved it!
Yes, all trips are welcome!
Whenever you go, no matter where I wish you the best holiday!
There is always something nostalgic about the off-season resort streets. Nostalgia, which is palpably felt, it soaked in everything around, took over it. Nostalgia and sadness. And yet, as I have said before, a place, its true soul, can be felt, and its true face can be seen, only in the absence of people. And that can only happen in the off-season.
I wouldn't say that I like Sozopol very much. I've always been bothered by its outrageously high prices, even in the off-season, but that's the price you always pay for visiting a famous resort.
Hey, do you know there is a new space for posts about favorite European places - Treasures of Europe. I will be glad if you visit it and share your favorite places and things. (And I also have many things to share there from the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. 😊)
You said it right, you found the right word and the right mood. Nostalgia!
Nostalgia makes everything more beautiful, I can also say now that I was a bit disappointed by Sozopol, visiting it after a break of a few years.
Thanks for the invitation! I love it and will visit "Treasures of Europe". I haven't visited many "treasures" and I don't think I will visit anymore and I have written about the ones I have visited many times here. I will try to write again though, maybe from a different perspective, as the years go by.
Ha ha, I think the title is a bit misleading. It's more about treasures from a personal point of view - something that impressed you personally or you just liked. Or it's just 'your thing'. I put the community thread this way so that authors don't have to look up historical information or any other information - just writing about your own experiences and feelings, preferences and how you saw and felt/liked this place/specific site.
Thank you very much for the response and subscription!
That's how I understood it and that's how I like it. Thank you!
