Does true blue orchid exist? My Coelogyne Intermediate orchid [1]

Sunday, 19th of February 2023 [48]

Hello Always a Flower community. I have recently discovered it, thanks to @wesphilbin 's reccomendation. I have plenty of flowers to share!

I’ve always dreamt of having a blue #orchid. Blue is my all-time favourite colour. Ever since I remember. Hence why you’ll almost always see 💙 at the end of my comments.

Does true blue orchid exist though? The simple answer is NO. Contrary to what you see on the picture above, there are no true blue orchids in nature. I wanted my blue orchid so much that I edited my white orchid for as long as it took to make it blue. In reality is as white as white goes. With a little yellow ;)

Botanists across the world do their best trying to hybridise various species of orchids to create that blue variety that I dream about, but in truth they still haven’t managed this. Only 10% of all flowers in the world are blue. Blue seems to be a rare pigment in nature in general.

Here another couple of my attempts at ‘creating’ blue orchid.

Even a pale blue would be a success! But so far, we only have #Vanda Coerulea, which some people call blue, but to my eyes it is still purple/lilac orchid, not really blue.

What about all those blue Phals we can sometimes find in supermarkets? Well, enjoy their ‘blueness’ while it lasts. The blue colour it has comes from a food dye and next time your orchid will bloom, it will be just plain white - the original base orchid sellers use for dye them blue.

Now that we have the question answered (sorry it’s a no), let’s have a look at my #CoelogyneIntermediate orchid.

I purchased it around 5 years ago at my local orchid society meeting. I was totally taken by its scent.

‘What scent? I can’t detect any!’ - I’d hear from other orchid lovers and people who visited my house while it was in bloom.

Well, that’s where my super sensitive sense of smell comes to play. The scent is so very delicate that I really need to stick my nose there to smell it, while most people sadly can’t smell anything.

Whether you can smell it or not, you must admit that the blooms are simply gorgeous! Fluffy white flowers with an intricate yellow lip. How I wish I had macro option in my phone to take even better capture of all the detail!

My orchid bloomed once of twice again and in the meantime it has been very busy growing pseudobulbs. So many of them that it climbed out of its pot and it lives half in the air these days.

The new p/bulbs are much smaller than the original ones though, which clearly shows my neglect in proper watering and feeding.

Despite being mistreated it grew 4 new p/bulbs last season and all 4 had a potential to bloom, as the flower spikes started to grow, but sadly they never developed fully last year. Around this time last year I completely lost the interest in life in general and my orchids and garden in general sure felt the same.

Upon last watering/feeding time, approximately 3 weeks ago, I finally removed all the remaining and dried up flower spikes.

Luckily for me, I also noticed the new potential flower spike! The usual spot for this orchid is in the corner of my windowsill and one year I almost missed the bloom, as it was hidden so well in the corner.

Man, I’m so grateful for the labels the orchid growers put inside the pots. Otherwise I’d have no chance of remembering some of the names of my orchids. Only thanks to watching 100’s of orchid videos on YouTube I am even able to pronounce some of those complicated names.

This spring I am planning to repot my #Coelogyne orchid, but the roots seem so happy in this semi-hydroponic setup and this pot in general. I’ll most likely will break a few in the process. I’m also pondering whether I should move it to a bigger pot or maybe divide in 2 and gift the other half to someone? Will see when time comes.

A few weeks ago, while watering my orchids, I decided to count how many out of 60-70 I once have are still alive. There are just over 40 of them.

Back in a day I wanted to have an orchid register. I even downloaded an app to keep track on them, but I lost interest at some point.

Now that I’m on Hive and I talk about my orchids a lot, I thought I’ll take some time to introduce each one of them to you as and when they bloom. They all have a story or two to tell 😉

So here is the start. No 1 - Coelogyne Intermediate [January 2019].

PS. Do you remember code blue from my Valentines article? In total 6 people responded with code blue in the comments. Sending the sbi units turned out to be a bit more challenging than expected, as the units didn’t seem to reflect in the wallet, so I’m sending one at the time and wait for the confirmation. So far I have sent it to @duvinca and @ewkaw and I have 4 more to send over the next week or two 💙

Until next time 💙

Ohhh no matter the color all the orchids are wonderful. And yours are very nice and so many and so different as I saw some time ago. Maybe no one os blue for a reason, nature knows well...
About blue or purple my Hyacinths are growing now and the scent is extraordinary 💙😍🌸

Beautiful great it got new life 😎
I got last week an orchid as present and it didn’t really survive a car ride of 12 hours… to us.
It lost the next days all flowers.
Not sure what to do next.
I gave it a bath… as it looked so dry. The 2 flower stems are shrivelled up.
Lost about 3 leaves, 2 left and they are looking better now after the bath.
Don’t have any idea what happened before me with it.
Any tips?

It has no name tag on it.

I'd take a guess it's a phalaenopsis, as these are the most commonly seen in shops around Europe.

Orchids don't take the changes too well, especially the sudden changes in temperature and humidity. I often loose flowers on my orchids when I start turning central heating on for example.

Yours seem to have suffered with cold is my bet. I wouldn't worry about flowers, but if it lost the leaves as well, then it must have gotten quite a shock. If it seems ok after the bath, keep it in stable temperatures, so it can get used to the new home and fingers crossed it will survive. I wouldn't water it for another 2-3 weeks, unless it's super hot and dry in your new place 💙

It had little purple flowers I think.

Yes, I think you are right. It had quite a shock squished between luggage 🧳
The leaves left do look better after the bath. Let’s hope it will come back to life 🤞🏻🤞🏻🍀🍀 I keep you posted.
Will keep a close eye on it.

Humidity inside is 40- 45% at the moment. The thermostat shows… does it need more water when it’s so dry in here?
Thanks sweetie 😊👋🏻
Have a lovely evening 😎

Yes, more watering when the air is dry, but not full on baths too often, cause the days are still short and they barely grow at this time (apart from developing flower spikes). In winter I mainly spray the roots a little every other day or so. Most of my orchids have plenty of aerial roots :)

Somewhere mid March you can start giving it regular baths once in 2 weeks, then once a week in summer. In general, when roots turn silver they need a drink, when they're green they're still happy.

Have a !love -ly evening too 💙

Ohhhh that Coelogyne is such a beauty! <3

I have the same dilemma with my Oncidum Sharry Baby. It is already in bigger pot and now I will have to either way put it in much larger one, or split it into two. Still don't know what to do.

Oh, maybe we should do swapsies! I did that with a friend from Scotland, but not sure how much the postage would be to/from Portugal.

I somehow never got round to buying Sharry Baby 🙊 I’m tempted to go to an orchid show and get some new orchids soon 😁

Would be cool! :D Though I am not sure if there are some plant restrictions between UK and EU now....

I found my one by accident in a supermarket for the price of a regular Phalaenopsis :) In winter they tend have some more unusual ones.
Go to the show! Get something nicey :P

Oh yeah, sometimes I forget that Brexit happened 🙈 Maybe I can send from Poland then 😁 They used to check my car more right after Brexit, but they slowly go back to ‘normal’ and I started smuggling odd plant here and there again 😉

Don’t make me jealous! When I lived in Netherlands, it was a regular occurrence to find some unusual plants for the price of Phals, but not so much here 🤷🏻‍♀️

I want to be your hero, I mean to create and send you some real blue orchids 💙💙💙 Anyways I thought that would be something that could be done . I guess science can't create everything well at least not yet.

Aww, Bob 🥰 But you are my hero again. A hero of generosity and pure heart 💙💙💙

Blue seems to be a rare pigment in nature in general. I hope it can be done one day though. Maybe in my lifetime if I’m lucky 😉🍀

I did get fouled once and later I started researching in and I found out the true 🙊

Orchids dominate my windowsills. I used to be obsessed with them and watched and read everything I could find about them. Some knowledge stayed even after a few years ☺️💙

There aren't any blue indeed. I remember seeing blue ones in the city market many moons ago, only to be told they were dyed.

Your orchids are fascinating to see, sis. That Coelogyne looks amazing it's pretty generous too as it produced more bulbs for you.

It did well over those years, sis. It could be easily split into 2 plants now, but I’m still hesitant whether to split or keep the whole plant for myself 😂 Greedy me!

@fantagira...

Beautiful flowers and an awesome post! My fiance was given two Phalaenopsis Orchids for her birthday on July 24th of last year... They were already bloomed when she got them, but the bloom period didn't last very long. We were in hopes they would rebloom... but so far, nothing. Here's a photo... the rooted one is a recent picture...

As you can see in the bottom right photo... these beautiful orchids are still growing. We have tried many things; rice water, banana water, and even beet root ground up. But they won't bloom. Just curious what you have done, to get these beautiful things to look so healthy, and bloom. Also... I bet @dswigle is happy that you decided to post in her community!

Love and light, dear friend!

Lovely Phals! My friend has the top one, but the bottom one with white hues on the edges is pretty rare to find 😍

Nothing wrong with your fiancé’s orchids. The one you attached photo off looks healthy. If they bloomed last year in June, they’ll have their ‘clocks’ set for flowering again at the same time the following year. Provided you cared for them well, they should have flower spikes showing around March/April this year, ready to open around June time. They might or might not bloom though - depends what mood they’re in 😉 I have orchids that haven’t bloomed for me for 5 years or so.

I will probably make a post with my basic care routine for Phals, as they are the most commonly found orchids in shops around the world 💙

Awesome of you to reply! These were bought at Walmart. So no telling what care they had, before we received them. I just know my better half loves them, and so do I! I look forward to seeing your care post... you have a perfect community (here) to post in!!!

Ehh, all Phal growers are the same. They grow them fast, with plenty of artificial light, spikes staked up to save space and they force them to bloom all year round for selling purposes. Natural time for Phals to bloom is around winter time. When temperatures drop in Autumn, that’s their ‘signal’ to start growing spikes. The other parts (roots and leaves) are on hold, until the flower spike is formed.

There is an abundance of communities to post in. HiveGarden, amazing Nature, Orchid Lovers too. I try to split my post somewhat evenly between them and now I have an extra one to post in 😍💙

I think many forget that plants, are more than just food to eat, flowers to smell, and trees to climb. They are living things...
