PhotoFeed Contest - Cityscape Photography Round 174 (Eng | Spanish)
In some of our cities, very old buildings survive as monuments—sometimes still standing, other times reduced to ruins. They form part of the city’s historical and cultural memory and are a special attraction for residents and visitors alike. In many cases, these are fortresses (also called castles, though they are not necessarily so) from the colonial era, at least in the case of Latin America.
In Cumaná, we have two very important ones: the Castillo de San Antonio de la Eminencia, located on a high hill from which the entire city can be seen; the Castillo de Santa María de la Cabeza, a fortification built in the 17th century, is situated next to the Minor Basilica of Santa Inés, in the heart of Cumaná’s historic district, and was once the residence of governors and a military garrison. All that remains are its walls and the chapel at its center. Everything else was destroyed by the earthquakes that have struck this oldest city.
The photos I’m posting here, taken recently, show some of those ruins.
