Sublime Deer Shed Sunday

avatar

Truly a Sublime Sunday for me. I found a fresh Deer Antler Shed this morning, and saw a Beaver swimming in the creek last night.

For those that don't know, all deer shed (lose) their antlers each year. This typically happens sometime Jan-March. I was very lucky to come across this one today. Actually Betty the dog found it. It was buried in the snow, with just three of the tips sticking out a bit. She kept pawing at it, and when I looked to see what she was pawing at, recognized the tips immediately. What a lucky find!

This is the best time to be looking for them, one to find them before others do, also if they lay very long, rodents, porcupines, and other critters will chew them up and eat them. This one is very fresh, probably only a week or two old and in fantastic shape.

During our walk, we found the Beavers have apparently moved farther up the creek and have been building more dams. This was my first time actually spotting them. They have at least 4-5 dams built now and are basically flooding this whole area in the ravine, making what was a nice, flowing creek only 5-6 feet wide into several shallow little ponds several hundred feet wide. Not sure I am liking this as the stagnant water will for sure become a massive mosquito breeding ground in the spring and summer vs. the nice fast moving creek that keeps them from breeding in it. They've also flooded out one of my ATV trails to the creek. I'm thinking at least a couple of these dams will have to go. Planning to blow them out with some Tannerite. Stay tuned for that.

Was a fantastic Sunday to be out and about. I also found we were being watched as we enjoyed our exploration.

This Tufted Titmouse giving us the upside down peek at us from the branches above.

Good find, that antler. It may come handy if you want to make some knife handles or so. But appearently they are not so rare. Have you ever seen the famous antler arches in Jackson Hole, WY? Take a look:

There is one on each corner of the square. And they seem to be surprisingly weather resistant, they have them for many years already.

How cool, don't think I'll be anywhere near that. I'm lucky to find one or two a year.

You guys have such different nature over there. I saw this video recently about a moose shedding its antlers at the same time and I was extremely surprised by the proces. Not that I had a better idea on how loosing the antlers would go, but just this is not what I had expected haha.

Wow, I didn't even think of being able to find a moose antler. Now I'm the one that will be motivated to check out some of the nearby wildlife areas!

Tannerite! I had to look that up. I'll definitely be waiting for video on that 🙂 Cool on the antler shed find. Gives me a reason to wander around in the woods behind my house. There are three houses that kind of protect a section of woods from hunters forming a deer refuge. Should be a good place to look for antlers.

Yes, there are some impressive Ytube videos out there of folks using 50 lbs and over on them. I've got about 40 lbs that came in last week. I'll probably split it into at least two blasts now that I've found another dam that needs opening up.

You don't come across deer antlers too often. In our neck of the woods, with all of the squirrels around, they are usually eaten in a few days.
Spotting a beaver along with the antlers, I'd call that a good day. Here in New York state, the local tavern will have a beaver roast once a year. I've never eaten this game but would love to try it.

I haven't tried it either, at least not that type of Beaver. Although I have tasted my share of wild ones, lol. Now if these are half as good, I could become addicted.
