Souvenir And Food At The Pumpkin Festival
There's no festival without souvenir and food and there was no different at the pumpkin festival of Szováta (Sovata) we visited last Saturday. It appears to be the biggest festival of this small town, so local restaurants and crafters were there to show off their beautiful crafts and to serve people the best food you can buy in the ares.
Although I had a small health problem the day before and knew I should avoid certain food, precisely the one that is typical for festivals and always calling my name, once we got there, all this evaporated from my mind into the universe.
Gelateria! If you don't know what it means, it's time for you to Google the term and learn it as it's for your own benefit, trust me :)
There's a very famous salt lake in Szováta, called Bear Lake, which attracts thousands of tourists on a daily bases from all over Europe, so the main road to the lake is full of restaurants, terraces, bars, hotels, B&Bs and so on. The weather was very nice, so these terraces were packed with visitors.
Legendary coffee since 1922? Too bad I don't drink coffee.
This ice cream shop was like 30m away from where we parked the car and this is how long my strong will of eating healthy lasted. How can you resist such yummy offer?
One is raspberry and chocolate, the other is chocolate and mango I think. Was it good? Oh God! I could eat 3 every day :)
You could buy all kinds of sandwiches here, hot dog, crepe, plus the healthier version of lángos, which is not fried, but baked. As you can see, they took security very seriously.
The traditional gulyás, which translates to goulash in English, can never be missing from any of the festival. Interestingly this gulyás was not calling my name as I can make it at home anytime.
This was something I've never seen before. Some kind of juice in a pumpkin. I saw some orange slices floating in it.
Turns out it was pumpkin punch for 5€, they had pumpkin spice latte, bruschetta with pumpkin (@blind-spot, did you have any in Italy? 😏) and pumpkin pie.
Kürtöskalács (horn cake in English) can't be missing from any of the festivals.
Kürtőskalács is made from sweet, yeast dough (raised dough), of which a strip is spun and then wrapped around a truncated cone–shaped baking spit, and rolled in granulated sugar. It is roasted over charcoal while basted with melted butter, until its surface cooks to a golden-brown color. During the baking process the sugar stuck on the kürtőskalács caramelises and forms a crisp, shiny crust. The surface of the cake can then be topped with additional ingredients such as ground walnut or powdered cinnamon. source
If you haven't had any kürtőskalács yet and see one somewhere in the big world where you live, don't miss it as it's heavenly good.
You could have a glass of wive for 2€, but I rarely drink alcohol, so this booth was definitely not for me.
Chestnuts always mean autumn at his part of the world because that's the only season you can buy chestnuts. It's a lot of fun to walk around the city with a bag of hot chestnuts in your hand, pealing them one by one, when it's cold. It wasn't cold on Saturday though, which is not very usual for mid October.
Brandy anyone? Peach, strawberry, grape, plum, apple, you name it.
Craft jams, zacusca, juice, honey and other goodies for all ages and taste. If my pantry would not be as full as it is now (and each year), I would definitely buy some, but the truth is, we have most of these products made by us, so why spend money on these.
This type of jewellery is not my thing but the wooden spoons and other wooden things are working like a magnet for me.
I haven't seen this type of candles for ages. Have you ever seen such candles? 7€? Sounds quite reasonable.
I remember I wanted to take a photo of these pumpkins and this little lady with her pumpkin hat was always in front of me, never willing to leave the scene so here she is, in the photo :) The hat was a bit too large for her, but who cares, right?
This type of ceramics is traditional and i was expecting to see more sellers, but there was only this one I think. Boots anyone?
More brandy? These are nice products and perfect if you need a gift for someone special. What I loved here was the metal cups, hanging on those ribbons. You just take the bottle, hang one around your neck and you don't lose it.
Lavender and me are not friends, but I still managed to take a photo of those beautiful bouquets and toys, stuffed with lavender, meant to help kids sleep better. Does the trick work? I don't know, they say it does. For bigger kids there was brandy again, to help them sleep better. Honey, juice and jams, all tied with that lovely rend and white checkered fabric.
Again, the hand painted wooden items were calling my name, but I resisted heroically. Look around, see if you see anyone familiar here :)
This is the place where most of the bystanders pause and thinking of buying something as the gingerbread sold here is absolutely fantastic. Nowadays you can buy all kinds of emojis and cartoon figures, but I still remain with the old school harts you see in the top row.
This could be your natural pharmacy for the winter. Besides 10 or more types of honey, they had a lot of products containing, different fruits in honey and nuts as well. One day I'm still going to buy a honey bear 😎 for old times sake.
Let's see if you've been able to find something interesting you'd buy. Let me know in a comment.

You must have had a wonderful time I believe. The pavilions look attractive with their bright colors. Nice to share the moments you spend their.
Indeed I had a great time and it was a nice day. Maybe the last festival of this kind as cold is coming.
That sounds like a great festival with lots of Nice things! I wouldn't have resisted the ice cream either! I hope you enjoyed the time there. Thanks for sharing it!
Looks like the ice cream is the winner today but I can't blame you since I tasted it 😄
Wow,what a beautiful time you had here in the festival.
I would love the ice cream.lol
Everyone wants the ice cream 🍦 😄
I love those candles! Just to look at, though. It would be such a waste to burn them until they're nothing but wax 😆
Looks like you had a lot of deliciousness to eat. Hard to avoid those at a festival. I had bruschetta in Italy, but they weren't with pumpkin. Is that a good combo?
Lol, I would not be able to burn them either. So it would stay on the shelf forever 😁
I have no clue 🤷♀ to be honest as it was the first time I saw such thing, had no clue it exists. I've only made pumpkin soup till now and had pumpkin cream with cheddar and beef.
the ice creams looks great!
Tasted great too.

Now that looks like so much fun! You already had me drooling at Gelateria! That stuff is soooo gooood! They have some really cool stuff there. With all that good looking food I would have gained some weight (which I definitely don't need to do!)
That honey selection at the end is pretty amazing. I know bee keepers here will keep bees in specific orchards to collect honey produced from different trees or flowers.
Sorry to hear you weren't feeling well before you went, but I hope you were able to enjoy the day!
You're not wrong about that, it was a lot of fun.
You and me both! I had a cheat day because it was the festival but the next day I went back to my diet. Good thing the festival season is slowly over, the next one will be the Christmas festival, which only starts in December.
Thank you for the nice words, good thing I got myself together for the festival and was able to be a pig, contrary to my doctor's recommendations 😁
Well, that's a lovely place to forget about any little health problems!... So I'm glad you're okay now! ;)
As always, a true "report" like for a magazine and full of charming photos... I particularly liked the one where the little girl appears from above with her "too big" pumpkin hat! he he he he :))....
Thanks for sharing and appaluse for you @erikah friend!

Indeed, once you're there, you can disconnect from the daily problems and enjoy the festival.
I'm glad you liked the little girl. She was messing up my plans y always being in the picture, but how can you be mad at such a little angel?
Thanks for the nice comment Jesus, you're always a gentleman! Have a nice day my friend 🤗

It's always very nice to be able to be in this moment, there to be able to see various things at the festival.
You're right, every festival is interesting, but this was a particular one.
$WINE
Thanks.
Here I am, arriving from the gym, with no food in my belly yet, and just saw your post. Everything was nice and pretty until I saw the Kürtöskalács and Langos images, which made me hate you for that!!! (Joke) 🤣
I hope you had some food already as my photos are dangerous 😁
I had! Two pretzels and some soup..still no kurtoskalacs or langos, huh! 🥺
You are welcome! I would have sent it faster but had some other things to take care of first ❤️
Weekend is coming, so you need to go get some kürtös and lángos, I bet you know where to find them 😏😆
BTW, thanks for the badge, I just noticed it this morning! 😘
This is a craft and food market where I can make absolutely unnecessary purchases 😂 I think I'm becoming a fan of buying things that are pretty, is it age? 🤣
Of course yes, I'm a fan of coffee... Well I'm from Venezuela so it may be obvious but it's a shame that we don't share that taste 😢 surely there are other things that do 🥰
I love how you teach me hahaha I searched the term "Gelateria/Gelato" and I learned something good today 😁
I love this place my dear Erika and the photos you took are beautiful, really beautiful, it would be nice to visit that place one day and enjoy it.
I must visit museums to especially dedicate some posts to you 😘 Have a nice day, dear ❤️🤗🥰
You have no idea how much self control I need to have when going to these markets and festivals 😁
I'm a huge fan of coffee still, but don't drink it anymore as I was heavily addicted to it and decided to stop drinking it 5 years ago.
Lol, I see you followed my instructions and learnt what gelateria and gelato means. Worth knowing that, you know? 😂
No rush with the museum, time will come for everything and I really appreciate you dedicating the post to me ❤️ Have a wonderful day and greetings to your model 😘🤣
The kürtőskalács sounds like a sugary spiral to heaven, while the diverse brandies could be autumn's liquid serenade. And those hand-painted wooden items? Pure nostalgia in technicolor.
Have you ever visited a festival that's left an imprint on your heart?
I would have had a hard time making it past the ice cream shop too. Coffee though it depends on how early it was and if I had any prior in which would probably be a 99% Yes. Alcohol I don't partake in. The Goulash I have been thinking about for a few days actually as I'm going to make once I get the recipe and talk to my mother. You bringing it up is just a reminder 😁 Also you found a weakness of mine, Gingerbread. Don't bring in my house because it will not leave, haha. Anyways I would have left with a bag full of stuff I think if I was there. Thanks for sharing a good walk through resisting lane.
That looks so nice!! I wish I could visit and buy some icecream.
From the gelato to kürtőskalács, and the crafts, it's a great showcase of local culture and traditions.
This is an open air bazaar that can get anyone out of control to do a lot of shopping, but like you I would just be happy with a nice ice cream and walk around the place to admire what's in each stall and take a lot of good pictures like yours. By the way the photo with the little girl in front of the pumpkins I really liked, she give it a very special touch 😊
A hug 💙
I think I would be buying ice cream both leaving the car park and returning 😊 in between I would learn about Kürtöskalács because that's not another treat for me that's educational... cultural even
