El Sol de por la tarde estaba radiante . . Marcaba de forma cortante las sombras de las plantas de tabaco sobre el suelo y la de las horras y sombreros sobre los rostros caoba y rojizos de los obreros en la finca " El divino Platón " aqui en n San luis , Pinar dtl Rio.

Cuando entre a la vega sembrada de la enigmática planta., Alla al final de una vereda, descubrí una escena que pog los contrastes de luces y sombras, atrajo mi atencion. Y mis ojos siempre al acecho descubrieron cierta belleza , en el ambiente .

Lo que captó mi admiración fue el momento sincronizado en que un reducido grupo de obreros depositaba las hojas recolectadas en " planchas"! sobre una " rastra": un artefacto sin ruedas, hecho de madera, y arrastrada por una yunta de bueyes cuando la carga se encuentra muy lejos del las casas de tabaco, como se le nombra a las construcciones de madera y zinc ( antiguamente de guano) donde se deposita las hojas despues de " ensartadas" sobre " cujes:" o finas baras de madera. Ese metodo de ensartar varia segun las regiones del pais donde se cultive la aromática hoja.

De lejos la yunta de bueyes resplandecía con su color blanco manchado, sobre todo por la parte de atrás producto de los excrementos, la yerba y el roce con la tierra.

Allí Converse en un breve descanso con los obreros que lucian obras de arte expresionista vivientes con sus atuendos para evitar el contacto directo con el Sol y con la " melusa" del tabaco,: sustancia verde viscosa que desprenden las hojas con su contacto , y de la que por mucho protegerse, estaban envadurnados.de pies a cabezas,.

Ya dije antes que estoy muy familiarizado con el cultivo y cosecha del tabaco en sentido general, pue creci en una zona tabacalera . Pero llegar y conversar con los trabajadores en plena faena. Oir sus experiencias personales_ desde que entran tempano al surco , cuando todavia las hojas empapadas de rocio, hasta que ya las condiciones de clima, no permiten seguir recolectando las hoja_ se recive von beneplacito.

Para mi el cultivo del tabaco ha sido algo que siempre me causa Admiracion ,y de hecho he practicado ese laboreo en el que he aprendido el proceso de las diferentes etapas por las que obligatoriamente tiene que pasar el cultivo.
Estas tierras de la finca el "Divino Platon "son muy fertiles y productivas. En especial cuando se atiende oportunamente, y como dicen los guajiros " si se les da los golpes a tiempo".

Realmente yo iba de pasada por aquel verguerio, acortando la ruta hacia otro destino, y quizás el sol con su luz poniendocontrastes fuertes sobre las cosas , las personas y los animales me tenía reservada esta oportunidad de describir tan bella escena campestre..

Alli estuve conversando de gorma intermitente con los obretos hasta wue el tistico medio para transportar las verdes hojas de tabaco, ya no admitia mas carga y partio hacia la gran casa , para oytra etapa del proceso .

What captured my admiration was the synchronized moment in which a reduced group of workers deposited the leaves collected in "planchas"! on a "rastra": a device without wheels, made of wood, and dragged by a yoke of oxen when the load is very far from the tobacco houses, as it is called to the constructions of wood and zinc (formerly of guano) where the leaves are deposited after "ensartadas" on "cujes:" or thin wooden bars. This method of stringing varies according to the regions of the country where the aromatic leaf is cultivated.

From a distance, the ox team shone with its stained white color, especially on the back side, product of the excrements, the grass and the rubbing with the earth.

There I had a brief rest with the workers who were wearing living expressionist works of art with their attire to avoid direct contact with the sun and with the "melusa" of tobacco, a viscous green substance that the leaves give off with their contact, and from which they were wrapped from head to toe, to protect themselves.

I have said before that I am very familiar with the cultivation and harvesting of tobacco in a general sense, because I grew up in a tobacco-growing area. But to come and talk to the workers in the middle of their work. Hearing their personal experiences - from the moment they enter the furrow, when the leaves are still soaked with dew, until the weather conditions no longer allow the leaves to be harvested - is a great pleasure.

For me the cultivation of tobacco has always been something that has always caused me admiration, and in fact I have practiced this work in which I have learned the process of the different stages through which the crop must necessarily pass.

These lands of the "Divino Platon" farm are very fertile and productive. Especially when they are taken care of in a timely manner, and as the "guajiros" say "if they are hit in time".

I was really passing through that place, shortening the route to another destination, and perhaps the sun with its light putting strong contrasts on things, people and animals had reserved for me this opportunity to describe such a beautiful country scene....

There I was chatting intermittently with the obrets until the cumbersome means of transporting the green tobacco leaves could no longer take any more load and left for the big house, for another stage of the process.
