I’ve experienced a few earthquakes before, but what I went through on Wednesday, June 24, was unlike anything else, it was far too violent. It was around 6:05 p.m. I was in the living room of the apartment watching soccer when suddenly a strong wind started blowing in through the window, then I heard a sound that seemed to come from the very depths of the earth, and right after that, my phone started ringing, alerting me that an earthquake was coming, and then the big jolt hit. I’m on the fourth floor, and everything was shaking uncontrollably, the power went out, the cats ran to hide, and my mom got really nervous, she was in the middle of a shower and ran out of the bathroom. My sister, who was also there, in another room, stood holding up a bookcase to prevent it from collapsing. The shaking seemed to go on forever... When it stopped, I went down to the street with my mom because she insisted on going out, and we stayed there with the other people for quite a while.

He vivido algunos eventos sísmicos antes, pero lo que experimenté el miércoles 24 de junio no se compara a ningún otro, fue demasiado violento. Eran aproximadamente las 6:05 de la tarde, estaba en la sala del apartamento viendo el fútbol cuando de repente empezó a entrar un viento fuerte por la ventana, luego se escuchó un sonido que provenía como de las entrañas de la tierra, seguidamente mi teléfono empezó a sonar también alertándome de que venía un terremoto y llegó el gran sacudón. Estoy en el piso 4 y todo se movía sin control, se fue la luz, los gatos corrieron a esconderse y mi mamá se puso muy nerviosa, justo se estaba dando una ducha y salió corriendo del baño. Mi hermana, que también estaba allí, en otra habitación, se quedó sosteniendo una biblioteca para que no se viniera abajo. El temblor parecía eterno... Cuando paró, bajé con mi mamá a la calle porque insistía en salir, y estuvimos con las demás personas allí un buen rato.

My phone lost signal, so I couldn't look up any information about what had just happened. Where was the epicenter? What was the magnitude of the earthquakes? Was there a lot of damage? But some neighbors and other people we spoke with on the street did have a signal and gave us the initial details: that there had been two earthquakes, and they were very strong, just as I had suspected.

Mi teléfono se quedó sin señal y no pude buscar información sobre lo que acababa de pasar. ¿Dónde fue el epicentro? ¿Qué magnitud tuvieron los sismos? ¿Había muchos daños? Pero algunos vecinos y otras personas con las que hablamos en la calle, sí tenían señal y nos dieron las primeras informaciones: que habían sido dos terremotos y de escalas muy fuertes, como suponía.

The epicenter of the earthquakes was in the central region of the country, between the states of Yaracuy and Carabobo. The latter is next to Aragua, where I live. However, most of the damage occurred in Caracas and especially in La Guaira, a coastal area half an hour from the capital. Unfortunately, many buildings collapsed there, resulting in injuries, missing persons, and fatalities 💔.

El epicentro de los terremotos fue en la región central del país, entre los estados Yaracuy y Carabobo. Este último queda al lado de Aragua, donde yo vivo. Sin embargo la mayor parte de los daños ocurrieron en Caracas y sobre todo en La Guaira, zona costera a media hora de la capital. Allí lamentablemente hubo muchos derrumbes de edificios, y en consecuencia, personas heridas, desaparecidas y fallecidas 💔.

As night began to fall, my mom and I returned to the apartment. The entire city was in darkness, and our cell phones still had no signal, so I couldn’t reach family or friends to find out how they were doing. Naturally, we hardly slept at all, and the power came back on at 3:30 a.m., about 8 hours after the incident. It wasn’t until the next morning that I realized the full scale of the event, seeing the terrible images on social media of the affected areas, people searching for their loved ones, and so on, a devastating scene. Although I don’t currently work for any media outlet, as a journalist, I wanted to file my own report, and as soon as I could, I went out to walk the streets of the city.

Cuando empezó a caer la noche, mi mamá y yo volvimos al apartamento. Toda la ciudad estaba a oscuras y seguíamos sin señal en los teléfonos, así que no podía comunicarme con familiares o amigos para saber cómo estaban. Como es lógico, casi no dormimos, y la electricidad volvió a las 3:30 de la madrugada, unas 8 horas después del suceso. Y fue en la mañana que me pude enterar de la dimensión de este evento, viendo por las redes las imágenes terribles de las zonas afectadas, gente buscando a sus familiares, etc., un escenario devastador. Aunque actualmente no trabajo para ningún medio, como periodista, quise hacer también mi reporte, y apenas pude salí a hacer un recorrido por las calles de la ciudad.

The atmosphere felt a bit uneasy, but there were people on the streets, and many businesses opened as usual. I took the photos you’re about to see in La Victoria, Aragua state. One of the instances of damage right in the city center was a traffic light that had fallen on the main avenue.

El ambiente se sentía algo intranquilo, pero había gente en las calles y muchos negocios abrieron sus puertas con normalidad. Las imágenes que verán a continuación las tomé en La Victoria, estado Aragua. Uno de los daños en pleno centro fue la caída del semáforo en la avenida principal.

The fenced-off area was there, and the authorities were on the scene with equipment and technicians, repairing the connections and replacing the traffic light.

Allí estaba el área cercada y se encontraban las autoridades con maquinaria y técnicos reparando las conexiones y reponiendo el semáforo.

During this tour, I took photos documenting some of the damage sustained by several buildings in the city center. Fortunately, it appears that much of this damage is superficial. The affected buildings are being assessed by the city’s engineering department.

En este recorrido registré en fotos algunos de los daños que sufrieron varias edificaciones del centro de la ciudad. Afortunadamente, al parecer gran parte de estos daños son superficiales. Los edificios afectados están siendo evaluados por la oficina de ingeniería de la ciudad.

Look at the center of the photo, the wall of this shopping mall, you can see some long cracks there.

Miren el centro de la fotos, la pared de este centro comercial, se ven unas grietas largas allí.

Then I walked through Ribas Square, where I had seen on social media that part of the church’s facade had collapsed. A crew from the city government was there clearing away the debris.

Luego pasé por la plaza Ribas, donde había visto por redes que se había caído una parte de la fachada de la iglesia. Allí estaba una cuadrilla de la alcaldía recogiendo los escombros.

This church is very old, it was inaugurated in 1805, and has been a National Historic Monument since 1962. The site was cordoned off because other parts of the building could collapse. For example, the bell tower had several cracks, and there had also been structural failures inside.

Esta iglesia es muy antigua, fue inaugurada en el año 1805, y desde 1962 es Monumento Histórico Nacional. El lugar estaba acordonado porque más partes de la edificación podrían ceder. Por ejemplo, el campanario tenía varias grietas, y por dentro también hubo desprendimientos.

I continued my tour of the city and came across several buildings with cracks that looked impressive. Many people were looking up, just like me. Later, on social media, I saw that the city government had compiled a list of affected structures and was asking people to report any cracks in their homes so they could assess the damage and prevent collapses and loss of life.

Continué con mi recorrido por la ciudad y encontré varios edifcios con grietas que se veían impresionantes. Muchas personas se quedaban viendo para arriba, como yo. Luego por redes vi que la alcaldía había hecho un listado de estructuras afectadas y pedía a la gente que reportaran si su vivienda presentaba grietas para ir a evaluar los daños y así evitar derrumbes y pérdidas de vidas.

It's so sad what so many people are going through, they've lost everything, including their families 💔. I'll never forget what I went through during this earthquake. I'm okay, and so is my family; I'm just grateful to be alive to tell the story.

Es demasiado triste lo que están pasando muchas personas que lo perdieron todo, incluyendo a su familia 💔. Yo jamás olvidaré lo que experimenté durante este terremoto. Estoy bien al igual que mi familia; simplemente agradezco estar viva para contarlo.
