Hola querido hiver.

Cada 12 de octubre Zaragoza se viste de gala para celebrar el día de su patrona, la Virgen del Pilar. El acto más importante es la Ofrenda de Flores, un largo desfile que aumenta en participación con cada nueva edición y de la que hoy comparto el resultado final: una gran pirámide que contiene las peticiones, agradecimientos y promesas de los fieles.

Un detalle peculiar es que muchos de esos fieles ni siquiera son creyentes de la fe católica. La figura de la Virgen del Pilar extiende su significado más allá como una entidad protectora, herencia de las primeras diosas que representaban los dones de la madre naturaleza.

Y naturaleza, en forma de flores, se le devuelve. En mi caso me gusta acudir dos o tres días después, cuando las aglomeraciones de gente han pasado y te puedes acercar para sentir el aroma y disfrutar de las más variadas presentaciones.

Al ser patrona de la Hispanidad, cada año se destaca a algún país hispanoamericano. En esta ocasión fue Perú, de ahí la reproducción de su bandera que se extiende a los pies de la imagen.

Normalmente las cestas más espectaculares están en la parte delantera, destacando entre todas la gran copia en pequeño que siempre trae la Guardia Civil. La corona transformada en flores es un detalle que me encantó. Sin embargo, lo que más me gustó de todo fue encontrarme la figura de ese tierno perrito que representaba a la unidad canina de la Unidad Militar de Emergencias.

La mayoría de curiosos damos una vuelta completa a la estructura metálica que sostiene las toneladas de flores. Ir leyendo los carteles que indican los grupos que las han entregado se convierte en un juego a ver si encontramos las de nuestro pueblo, o la asociación de vecinos de nuestro barrio, o el equipo de fútbol donde juega un sobrino. Lo que más se escucha es "Mira, la cesta de..." o expresiones de fastidio por no encontrarla a pesar de saber el lugar aproximado donde se depositó.

Lo que empezaron siendo humildes ramos de claveles se ha ido transformando poco a poco en una demostración de lo que el arte floral es capaz de conseguir. La lástima es que entre tantos ejemplos y acumulación son pocas las que logran destacar.

Cuando terminamos de rodear la pirámide nos dirigimos a la puerta principal de acceso a la Basílica del Pilar para ir a ver la talla original. Frente a la puerta quedaban los restos de la alfombra floral que realizó la Asociación de Alfombristas do Corpus Christi de Ponteareas (Pontevedra). Había sido pisada por la comitiva que acompañaba a la imagen de plata de la Virgen del Pilar que sacan en procesión solamente el 12 de octubre.

Espero que te hayan gustado las fotografías. Es una lástima que no transmitan el olor, pero al menos te he acercado un poco a esta tradición de mi tierra.

Hi, dear hiver.

Every 12 October, Zaragoza dresses up to celebrate the day of its patron saint, the Virgin of Pilar. The most important event is the Flower Offering, a long parade that grows in popularity with each new edition and whose final result I share today: a large pyramid containing the requests, thanks and promises of the faithful.

A peculiar detail is that many of these faithful are not even believers of the Catholic faith. The figure of the Virgin of Pilar extends its meaning beyond that of a protective entity, a legacy of the first goddesses who represented the gifts of Mother Nature.

And nature, in the form of flowers, returns the favour. In my case, I like to go two or three days later, when the crowds have passed and you can get closer to smell the aroma and enjoy the wide variety on display.

As the patron saint of Hispanic culture, each year a different Hispanic American country is highlighted. On this occasion, it was Peru, hence the reproduction of its flag at the foot of the image.

Normally, the most spectacular baskets are at the front, with the large replica that the Civil Guard always brings standing out among them all. The crown transformed into flowers is a detail that I loved. However, what I liked most of all was finding the figure of that cute little dog representing the canine unit of the Military Emergency Unit.

Most of us curious onlookers walk all the way around the metal structure that supports the tonnes of flowers. Reading the signs indicating the groups that have delivered them becomes a game to see if we can find those from our village, or our neighbourhood association, or the football team where a nephew plays. The most common comments are ‘Look, the basket from...’ or expressions of annoyance at not finding it despite knowing the approximate location where it was placed.

What began as humble bouquets of carnations has gradually transformed into a demonstration of what floral art is capable of achieving. The pity is that among so many examples and so much accumulation, few manage to stand out.

When we finished walking around the pyramid, we headed to the main entrance of the Basilica del Pilar to see the original carving. In front of the door were the remains of the floral carpet made by the Association of Carpet Makers of Corpus Christi of Ponteareas (Pontevedra). It had been trampled by the procession accompanying the silver image of the Virgin of Pilar, which is only carried in procession on 12 October.

I hope you enjoyed the photographs. It's a shame they can't convey the smell, but at least I've given you a little insight into this tradition from my homeland.
