Hola querido hiver.

Hi, dear hiver.

Now that shops and supermarkets are filling up with products for us to consume celebrate Halloween, I'm going to show you a peculiar place that I wouldn't want to visit on that night, although I admit that it's an ideal destination for fans of the Night of the Dead.

The House of God is difficult to define. It is a work by Julio Basanta, a self-taught artist who devoted several years of his life to creating these sculptures on a piece of land some distance from the town centre of Épila, near Zaragoza.

IMG_0435.JPG

IMG_0436.JPG

IMG_0438.JPG

IMG_0439.JPG

Adorning the exterior of a country house are sculptures of demons, witches, biblical figures, and unimaginable allegories. One thing is certain: they leave no one who passes by indifferent.

IMG_0441.JPG

IMG_0442.JPG

IMG_0443.JPG

IMG_0444.JPG

The figures are made from building materials, as this appears to have been Julio Basanta's profession, as well as recycled objects. The final shapes are created by applying a layer of cement covered with paint. Unfortunately, the site appears to have been abandoned and the deterioration of the complex is evident.

IMG_0445.JPG

IMG_0446.JPG

IMG_0469.JPG

IMG_0470.JPG

From what I have been able to ascertain, Basanta passed away in 2018. Until then, he himself would go out to meet passers-by and explain that his inspiration came as a way of sublimating his pain at the loss of a brother and a son. And boy, did he manage to reflect that. If it is already unsettling during the day, I cannot imagine visiting it in the darkness of night.

IMG_0449.JPG

IMG_0450.JPG

IMG_0451.JPG

IMG_0452.JPG

Everything on the exterior refers to death, both in a religious and pagan sense. Scenes of the crucifixion, dead people rising from their coffins, the figure of the traitor apostle, demons.

IMG_0468.JPG

IMG_0466.JPG

IMG_0467.JPG

IMG_0454.JPG

In contrast, the visible part of the interior wall of the estate recreates less gloomy figures. However, everything leads us to think of a defensive aspect, as if Basanta wanted to prevent further tragedies from befalling his home. He had already suffered enough. In fact, he called his home “my little castles”.

IMG_0455.JPG

IMG_0456.JPG

IMG_0457.JPG

IMG_0458.JPG

Three years after Julio Basanta's death, the house was sold. The buyer intended to convert it into a residence for artists. This would ensure that the legacy of its creator would be preserved. I imagine that the decorations in a small area (photo above) set aside for relaxation date from that time. But something must have happened, because in recent times the deterioration has accelerated and seems abandoned.

IMG_0459.JPG

IMG_0461.JPG

IMG_0462.JPG

The House of God is considered one of the world's finest artistic landscapes by an international expert in outsider art. Art is emotion, and here we find it in abundance.

Good morning, dear friend @palomap3

What a unique place you visited! There's so much art on that property! It's a way for the artist to express what he was going through in his life at that time. It must have been very hard to lose loved ones. The name he decided to give the place is also very striking.

I don't blame you for not wanting to visit the place on Halloween night; it's truly spooky.

Thank you so much for sharing the beautiful shots and the story behind them.

Have a beautiful Sunday.

I hope Sunday goes well. We celebrate our patron saint, the Virgen del Pilar, and we will spend the day as a family. I wish you a happy Sunday too. 🤗

It’s so scary, yes. As I visited it without knowing anything about it, I was more impressed when I learned about it later. The world is full of amazing surprises! 😃

The images add incredible visual power. Each photo reveals details, from the eerie yet alluring statues, religious and pagan symbols, to the decaying state of the buildings, all blending authentically with the raw art aesthetic. The lighting and composition in your photos bring the atmosphere to life, sometimes dramatic, sometimes quiet but meaningful.

Sure scary 😱 I love Halloween, but Halloween characters are too much for me, hello nightmares, but I think that's a best place for a movie setting, especially if filmed at night 👻 trick or treat 🕷️🕸️

Buenas noches Paloma.

Gracias.

Un abrazo muy grande. 🤗

Good evening, Paloma. I don't know what to say about this three-dimensional house of God in Basanta. It's gloomy, and I don't want to get into interpretations, but your idea that this house was the stronghold of a human being accompanied by suffering is very accurate. In fact, the house of God is Basanta's house...

Thanks to the images, which are always very good in your publications, we have the opportunity to see the details, all those figures and other objects with all their details, and also the image as a whole. It's wonderful.

I loved the room with those eyes looking inward. I really loved everything... When I saw the house, Gaudí also passed before my eyes... my own thoughts.

It saddens me greatly that this work is not receiving the attention it deserves. Thank you very much for this publication. Although the hive collapsed yesterday, this publication adds a lot of value to HIve; a value that cannot be quantified but is nevertheless very significant. Thank you.

A big hug. 🤗
