The bogeyman. Reflecting on photography and life |Monomad| [Eng -Esp]

Hello black and white community:

The camera is a powerful tool to get to know the people around us, even those we meet on the street and with whom, in other circumstances, we would not talk to.

For me, beyond taking a good or bad photograph, it is more important to know someone's story.

The bogeyman, as I want to call him (he told me his name when we talked), is a retired man who collects cans and other raw materials every day to sell them in a collection house in order to survive from day to day. I met him by the beach township and, helping him carry his sacks, he told me how difficult these times were for someone like him. He would walk for miles from early in the morning, rummaging around the tourist sites to fill his huge bags with soda cans, plastic knobs, among other things. Afterwards, he would carry these bags back to the house of a friend who gave him lodging, after having lived on the streets for a long time.

It was a pleasant conversation; he was an educated and sane man. I told him about my work, showed him my name and what I did, assuring him that I would not use his image to demerit him. I was talking to him about the documentary photography that I love so much, and he even told me about great documentary photographers from the history of my country, whose work he knew from the newspapers of his youth.

There are so many people we come across every day and we don't know their problems and the situations they are going through that we should not prejudge anyone, ever.

Looking at and treating others with kindness should be everyone's religion, no matter who it is in front of us.

La cámara es una herramienta poderosa para conocer a las personas que tenemos a nuestro alrededor, incluso a aquellas que nos encontramos en la calle y con las cuales, en otras circunstancias, no hablaríamos.

Para mí, más allá de lograr una buena o mala fotografía, es más importante conocer la historia de alguien.

El hombre del saco, como quiero llamarlo (me dijo su nombre cuando conversamos), es un jubilado que recoge a diario latas y otras materias primas para venderlas en una casa de recogida y así poder sobrevivir al día a día. Me lo encontré por el municipio playa y, ayudándole a cargar sus sacos, me contó lo difíciles que eran estos tiempos para alguien como él. Caminaba kilómetros desde temprano en la mañana, rebuscando entre los alrededores de los sitios turísticos para llenar sus enormes bolsas con latas de refrescos, pomos plásticos, entre otras cosas. Después, cargaba estas bolsas de vuelta a la casa de un amigo que le daba hospedaje, tras haber vivido mucho tiempo en la calle.

Fue una conversación amena; era un hombre culto y cuerdo. Le conté sobre mi trabajo, le mostré mi nombre y lo que hacía, asegurándole que no utilizaría su imagen para demeritarle. Estuve hablándole sobre la fotografía documental que tanto me gusta, y él me habló incluso de grandes fotógrafos documentales de la historia de mi país, cuyo trabajo conocía por los periódicos de su juventud.

Son tantas las personas con las que nos cruzamos cada día y no conocemos sus problemas y las situaciones que están pasando que no deberíamos prejuzgar a nadie, nunca.

Mirar y tratar al prójimo con amabilidad debería ser la religión de todos, sin importar quién sea el que esté delante de nosotros.
