Mobile street stands. In Peru, they’re everywhere, and we call them kioscos. Well, not only in Peru many countries have them too. These small spaces allow people to work and make a living. They have municipal licenses, permits, and everything required, but that’s not really the point. What matters is that people spend the entire day inside these tiny 5x5 booths, enduring heat and sun that can be truly overwhelming.

Still, every effort is worth it when the work is honest. For me, that’s something essential.

These are admirable people, offering a service and helping their communities. Everyone has to make a living somehow, right? We have shoe repairers, food vendors, and many other trades. Food stands are the most common and of course, Peru is globally known for its cuisine. Not everyone knows this, but our food is incredibly diverse and delicious: fresh dishes like ceviche, and more elaborate ones from our comida criolla. I could spend all day listing my favorite dishes… there are many.

In the end, it’s the daily struggle of each person. I always try to document and represent these fighters who give their all every single day. Their sacrifices are enormous. I can only imagine how tough it must be to spend all day inside those kiosks in the heat, especially knowing how unbearable Lima’s heat can be. Surviving at that pace is brutal, yet they do it to put food on the table.

I hope these photographs resonate with you and serve as a tribute to these people. I also hope they help us become more aware and more grateful for this kind of work, because behind it there is a tremendous sacrifice. I truly admire them and am deeply grateful.

Casas ambulantes. En Perú existen por todos lados y las llamamos kioscos. Bueno, no solo en Perú; en muchos países también. Estos espacios permiten que muchas personas trabajen y se ganen la vida. Tienen licencia municipal, permisos y todo lo necesario, pero ese no es el punto. El punto es que pasan ahí todo el día, dentro de un pequeño cubículo de 5x5, soportando el calor y el sol, que pueden ser realmente agobiantes.

Aun así, todo esfuerzo vale cuando se trabaja de manera honrada. Para mí, eso es fundamental.

Son personas admirables y loables, porque ofrecen un servicio y ayudan a la comunidad. Hay que salir del paso, ¿no? Tenemos zapateros, vendedores de comida, y muchos otros oficios. La comida es lo más común, y, lógicamente, Perú es mundialmente reconocido por su gastronomía. No todo el mundo lo sabe, pero nuestra cocina es diversa y riquísima: platos frescos como el ceviche, o preparaciones más elaboradas de la comida criolla. Podría pasarme el día mencionando mis platos favoritos.

Al final, es la lucha diaria de cada persona. Siempre trato de documentar y representar a estos luchadores que hacen todo lo posible día a día. Sus sacrificios son enormes. Imagino lo difícil que debe ser pasar todo el día en esos kioscos con el calor, sobre todo sabiendo que el calor de Lima puede ser insoportable. Sobrevivir a ese ritmo es durísimo, pero muchos lo hacen para llevar comida a la mesa.

Espero que estas fotografías les gusten y, sobre todo, que sirvan como tributo a estas personas. Ojalá también nos ayuden a tomar conciencia y a estar agradecidos por este tipo de servicio, porque detrás hay un sacrificio muy grande. Yo los admiro mucho y les estoy profundamente agradecido.
